As did the very first ISLAND workshop, ISLAND 3 took place on the Hebridean island of Islay, providing a beautiful and serene surrounding for the meeting which ran for over four days. Building on the success of the previous meetings, ISLAND 3 saw the largest number (so far) of participants coming from countries all over the world. A complete list can be found below.

Let R be a ring with a monomorphism α and an α-derivation δ. We introduce (α, δ)-weakly rigid rings which are a generalisation of α-rigid rings and investigate their properties. Every prime ring R is (α, δ)-weakly rigid for any automorphism α and α-derivation δ. It is proved that for any n, a ring R is (α, δ)-weakly rigid if and only if the n-by-n upper triangular matrix ring Tn(R) is (, )-weakly rigid if and only if Mn(R) is (, )-weakly rigid. Moreover, various classes of (α, δ)-weakly rigid rings is constructed, and several known results are extended. We show that for an (α, δ)-weakly rigid ring R, and the extensions R[x], R[[x]], R[x; α, δ], R[x, x−1; α], R[[x; α]], R[[x, x−1; α]], the ring R is quasi-Baer if and only if the extension over R is quasi-Baer. It is also proved that for an (α, δ)-weakly rigid ring R, if any one of the rings R, R[x], R[x; α, δ] and R[x, x−1; α] is left principally quasi-Baer, then so are the other three. Examples to illustrate and delimit the theory are provided.

We study the set of all m-tuples (λ(1), . . ., λ(m)) of possible types of finite abelian p-groups Mλ(1), . . ., Mλ(m) for which there exists a long exact sequence Mλ(1) → ⋅⋅⋅ → Mλ(m). When m=3, we recover W. Fulton's (Eigenvalues of majorized Hermitian matrices and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients (Special Issue: Workshop on Geometric and combinatorial Methods in the Hermitian Sum Spectral Problem), Linear Algebra Appl. 319(1–3) (2000), 23–36) results on the possible eigenvalues of majorized Hermitian matrices.

We continue the study of a mathematical model for a forest ecosystem which has been presented by Y. A. Kuznetsov, M. Y. Antonovsky, V. N. Biktashev and A. Aponina (A cross-diffusion model of forest boundary dynamics, J. Math. Biol. 32 (1994), 219–232). In the preceding two papers (L. H. Chuan and A. Yagi, Dynamical systemfor forest kinematic model, Adv. Math. Sci. Appl. 16 (2006), 393–409; L. H. Chuan, T. Tsujikawa and A. Yagi, Aysmptotic behavior of solutions for forest kinematic model, Funkcial. Ekvac. 49 (2006), 427–449), the present authors already constructed a dynamical system and investigated asymptotic behaviour of trajectories of the dynamical system. This paper is then devoted to studying not only the structure (including stability and instability) of homogeneous stationary solutions but also the existence of inhomogeneous stationary solutions. Especially it shall be shown that in some cases, one can construct an infinite number of discontinuous stationary solutions.

In present paper we define a new kind of quantized enveloping algebra of (2). We denote this algebra by Ur,t, where r, t are two non-negative integers. It is a non-commutative and non-cocommutative Hopf algebra. If r = 0, then the algebra Ur,t is isomorphic to a tensor product of the algebra of infinite cyclic group and the usual quantum enveloping algebra of (2) as Hopf algebras. The representation of this algebra is studied.

A closed Riemann surface which can be realized as a three-sheeted covering of the Riemann sphere is called trigonal, and such a covering is called a trigonal morphism. If the trigonal morphism is a cyclic regular covering, the Riemann surface is called a cyclic trigonal Riemann surface. Using the characterization of cyclic trigonality by Fuchsian groups, we find the structure of the space of cyclic trigonal Riemann surfaces of genus 4.

We extend the concept of umbilicity to higher order umbilicity in Riemannian manifolds saying that an isometric immersion is k-umbilical when APk−1(A) is a multiple of the identity, where Pk(A) is the kth Newton polynomial in the second fundamental form A with P0(A) being the identity. Thus, for k=1, one-umbilical coincides with umbilical. We determine the principal curvatures of the two-umbilical isometric immersions in terms of the mean curvatures. We give a description of the two-umbilical isometric immersions in space forms which includes the product of spheres embedded in the Euclidean sphere S2k+1 of radius 1. We also introduce an operator φk which measures how an isometric immersion fails to be k-umbilical, giving in particular that φ1 ≡ 0 if and only if the immersion is totally umbilical. We characterize the two-umbilical hypersurfaces of a space form as images of isometric immersions of Einstein manifolds.

Quaternionic vector mKDV equations are derived from the Cartan structure equation in the symmetric space = Sp(n+1)/Sp(1) × Sp(n). The derivation of the soliton hierarchy utilizes a moving parallel frame and a Cartan connection 1-form ω related to the Cartan geometry on modelled on . The integrability structure is shown to be geometrically encoded by a Poisson–Nijenhuis structure and a symplectic operator.

The Atiyah–Drinfeld–Hitchin–Manin–Nahm (ADHMN) construction of magnetic monopoles is given in terms of the (normalizable) solutions of an associated Weyl equation. We focus here on solving this equation directly by algebro-geometric means. The (adjoint) Weyl equation is solved using an ansatz of Nahm in terms of Baker–Akhiezer functions. The solution of Nahm's equation is not directly used in our development.

Let n be the n-dimensional hyperbolic space with n ≥ 2. Suppose that G is a discrete, sense-preserving subgroup of Isomn, the isometry group of n. Let p be the projection map from n to the quotient space M = n/G. The first goal of this paper is to prove that for any a ∈ ∂n (the sphere at infinity of n), there exists an open neighbourhood U of a in n ∪ ∂ n such that p is an isometry on U ∩ n if and only if a ∈ oΩ(G) (the domain of proper discontinuity of G). This is a generalization of the main result discussed in the work by Y. D. Kim (A theorem on discrete, torsion free subgroups of Isomn, Geometriae Dedicata109 (2004), 51–57). The second goal is to obtain a new characterization for the elements of Isomn by using a class of hyperbolic geometric objects: hyperbolic isosceles right triangles. The proof is based on a geometric approach.

Let x0 < x1 < x2 < ⋅⋅⋅ be an increasing sequence of positive integers given by the formula xn=⌊βxn−1 + γ⌋ for n=1, 2, 3, . . ., where β > 1 and γ are real numbers and x0 is a positive integer. We describe the conditions on integers bd, . . ., b0, not all zero, and on a real number β > 1 under which the sequence of integers wn=bdxn+d + ⋅⋅⋅ + b0xn, n=0, 1, 2, . . ., is bounded by a constant independent of n. The conditions under which this sequence can be ultimately periodic are also described. Finally, we prove a lower bound on the complexity function of the sequence qxn+1 − pxn ∈ {0, 1, . . ., q−1}, n=0, 1, 2, . . ., where x0 is a positive integer, p > q > 1 are coprime integers and xn=⌈pxn−1/q⌉ for n=1, 2, 3, . . . A similar speculative result concerning the complexity of the sequence of alternatives (F:x↦x/2 or S:x↦(3x+1)/2) in the 3x+1 problem is also given.

Let G be a finite Steinberg–Tits triality group 3D4(q), and let H be a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. In this paper we classify irreducible characters χ of G such that χH has a linear constituent with multiplicity one.

This paper deals with the global existence and blow-up properties of the following non-Newton polytropic filtration system coupled with local source: ut − Δm,pu = avα, vt − Δn,qv = buβ. Under appropriate hypotheses, we prove that the solution either exists globally or blows up in finite time depending on the initial data and the relations between αβ and mn(p − 1)(q − 1).

We prove some results on algebras, satisfying many generic relations. As an application we show that there are Golod–Shafarevich algebras which cannot be homomorphically mapped onto infinite dimensional algebras with finite Gelfand–Kirillov dimension. This answers a question of Zelmanov (Some open problems in the theory of infinite dimensional algebras, J. Korean Math. Soc. 44(5) 2007, 1185–1195).

Polynomials appearing in the description of ground states of superintegrable chiral Potts models are shown to satisfy a special class of generalised hypergeometric differential equations after a simple modification. This proves a conjecture of von-Gehlen and Roan.

We give two types of generalisation of the well-known Fuglede–Putnam theorem. The paper is ‘spiced up’ with some examples and applications.

Let A, B denote binary forms of order d, and let 2r−1 = (A, B)2r−1 be the sequence of their linear combinants for . It is known that 1, 3 together determine the pencil {A + λ B}λ∈P1 and hence indirectly the higher combinants 2r−1. In this paper we exhibit explicit formulae for all r ≥ 3, which allow us to recover 2r−1 from the knowledge of 1 and 3. The calculations make use of the symbolic method in classical invariant theory, as well as the quantum theory of angular momentum. Our theorem pertains to the plethysm representation ∧2Sd for the group SL2. We give an example for the group SL3 to show that such a result may hold for other categories of representations.

On any ‘weakly non-associative’ algebra there is a universal family of compatible ordinary differential equations (provided that differentiability with respect to parameters can be defined), any solution of which yields a solution of the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy with dependent variable in an associative sub-algebra, the middle nucleus.

For any rotation-invariant positive regular Borel measure ν on the closed unit ball whose support contains the unit sphere , let L2a be the closure in L2 = L2(, dν) of all analytic polynomials. For a bounded Borel function f on , the Toeplitz operator Tf is defined by Tf(ϕ) = P(fϕ) for ϕ ∈ L2a, where P is the orthogonal projection from L2 onto L2a. We show that if f is continuous on , then Tf is compact if and only if f(z) = 0 for all z on the unit sphere. This is well known when L2a is replaced by the classical Bergman or Hardy space.

The c-dimension of a group is the maximum length of a chain of nested centralizers. It is proved that a periodic locally soluble group of finite c-dimension k is soluble of derived length bounded in terms of k, and the rank of its quotient by the Hirsch–Plotkin radical is bounded in terms of k. Corollary: a pseudo-(finite soluble) group of finite c-dimension k is soluble of derived length bounded in terms of k.
