New details from remotely sensed images of the structure and disposition of broad lithological variations in the Pan-African of northern Eritrea are discussed in the context of accretionary tectonics. The recognition of major north-south structural discontinuities allows the area to be divided into three discrete terranes with apparently different histories of deformation and metamorphism, magmagenesis and sedimentation. The central Hagar Terrane is dominated by large ultramafic masses with a volcano-sedimentary layered sequence, and shows the effects of major sinistral transpression and lateral expulsion. It is bounded to the west by a major fault, the Barka suture, and abuts the older Barka Terrane that comprises metasediments with evidence for polyphase ductile deformation and pre-kinematic dyke emplacement. The Hagar Terrane is thrust against the eastern Nacfa Terrane, which is dominated by low-grade calc-alkaline metavolcanics and immature volcanoclastic sediments intruded by syn-kinematic plutons. These units are pre-dated by an earlier high-grade basement and post-dated by high-level unmetamorphosed silicic volcanics and redbed sediments. The complex is suggested to have been assembled by oblique accretion from the southeast after arc volcanism in the Nacfa Terrane and back-arc extension in the Hagar Terrane ended with the cease of subduction.

The Billefjorden Fault Zone displays a complex tectonic history going back into Precambrian times. Observed thickness variations within Mesozoic sequences across the fault zone have previously been related to Mesozoic extensional movements along the fault zone. Recent structural, stratigraphical and sedimentological investigations suggest that the thicknessvariation observed across the fault zone is due to Tertiary compressional tectonics, and that Mesozoic extensional movements are minor or nonexistent.Tertiary deformation is characterized by a combined thin-skinned/thick-skinned structural style. Thin-skinned thrusting is due to the development of décollement zones in the Jurassic/Cretaceous Janusfjellet Subgroup and in the Triassic Sassendalen Group. Thick-skinned faulting is related to reverse faulting along a steep, east-dipping fault rooted in the pre-Mesozoic basement. Interacting thin-skinned thrusting and thick-skinned faulting has resulted in out-of-sequence thrusting, and is responsible for the thinning of Mesozoic sequences across the fault zone.

The Okenyenya igneous complex is one of a suite of intrusions which define a prominent northeast-trending linear feature in Damaraland, northwestern Namibia. Precise Rb–Sr internal isochron ages range from 128.6 ± 1 to 123.4 ± 1.4 Ma for the major phases of intrusion identified within the complex. The tholeiitic gabbros forming the outer rings of the complex, and the later alkali gabbros which form the central hills, cannot be distinguished in terms of Rb–Sr ages, although field relations clearly indicate the younger age of the latter. The intrusionsof nepheline-syenite and essexite comprising the mountain of Okenyenya Bergon the northern edge of the complex give ages of 123.4 ± 1.4 and 126.3 ± 1 Ma, respectively, and form the final major phase of intrusion. The ages obtained for early and late intrusive phases define a minimum magmatic ‘life-span’ of approximately 5 Ma for the complex. The determined age of the Okenyenya igneous complex (129–123 Ma), when taken together with the few reliable published ages for other Damaraland complexes (130–134 Ma), suggests that these sub-volcanic complexes were emplaced contemporaneously with the widespread Etendeka volcanics (˜ 130 Ma), and relate to magmatism associated with the breakup of southern Africa and South America with the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The linear distributionof intrusions in Damaraland is interpreted to be due to magmatism resultingfrom the upwelling Tristan plume being focused along a structural discontinuity between the Pan-African, Damaran terrain to the south, and Proterozoiccratonic basement to the north.

Gravity and aeromagnetic data from Britain, Belgium and the southern North Sea have been compiled to provide coverage of the greater part of the Anglo-Brabant Massif. Colour pseudo-relief maps of the gravity and magnetic fields highlight important anomalies and trends which provide new information on the structure of the massif and its margins. Within the massif, prominent SSE-trending geophysical lineaments define the margins of distinctive blocks within the upper crust. These are cross-cut on the northeastern margin of the massif by prominent ESE- and SE-trending magnetic and gravity lineaments. The possible history and origin of the more prominent geophysical anomalies and lineaments are considered. Integrated modelling of the potential field data has been carried out along the BIRPS MOBIL-7 seismic reflection line to provide an interpretation of crustal structure across the northeast margin of the massif constrained by all three datasets. The principal features of the model are a non-reflective, non-magnetic upper crust, interpreted as the Caledonian fold–thrust belt, overlying a heterogeneous middle–lower crust with laterally varying reflectivity, magnetization and density. ESE-trending magnetic anomalies along the northeast edge of the massif are explained in terms of an irregular mid-crustal magnetic layer with a susceptibility comparable to that of the Tubize Group in the Brabant Massif. The top of this body is coincident with prominent dipping mid-crustal reflectors observed on the seismic reflection profile and its overall geometry is compatible with mid-crustal imbrication inferred from the seismic data.

Digital processing and image-based display techniques have been used to generate contour and shaded-relief maps of Belgian aeromagnetic data at a scale of 1:300000 for the whole of Belgium. These highlight the important anomalies and structural trends, particularly over the Brabant Massif. North and vertically illuminated shaded-relief plots, enhanced structural belts trending west–east to northwest–southeast in the Brabant Massif and west–east to southwest–northeast in the core of the Ardennes. The principal magnetic lineaments have been identified from the shaded-relief plots and tentatively correlated to basement structures. Most short lineaments are correlated with individual folds while the more extensive lineaments are correlated with large scale fault structures. Magnetic highs within the Brabant Massif are attributed to folded sediments of the Tubize Group. The magnetic basement in the east of Belgium is sinistrally displaced to the north by an inferred deep NNW–SSE crustal fracture. The Bouguer anomaly map of Belgium identifies the Ardennes as a negative area, and the Brabant Massif as a positive area, with the exception of a WNW–trending gravity low in its western part. The southern margin of the Brabant Massif is defined by a steep gravity gradient coincident with the Faille Bordiere (Border Fault). Trial modelling of the gravity and magnetic data, carried out along profiles across the Brabant and Stavelot massifs, has identified probable acid igneous intrusions in the western part of the Brabant Massif, and a deep magnetic lower density body underlying the whole Ardennes region, which is thought to be a distinctive Precambrian crustal block.

Upper Triassic/Lower Jurassic organic-rich shales and interbedded carbonates (Rhaetian → Sinemurian) are widespread in the subsurface of southeastern Sicily where important oil fields have been found hosted in Triassic reservoirs. Core samples from wells drilled offshore and onshore were studied from petrographie and geochemical viewpoints.

In the Hettangian/Sinemurian shale-carbonate sequences, which accumulated in a rapidly subsiding basin, the micritic aragonitic mud is still largely preserved. Mixed-layer I/S has remained randomly interstratified to a depth > 4000 m. Diagenetic carbonates are non-stoichiometric finely crystalline, pore-filling dolomite and/or calcite. The carbonate component exhibits a high Sr content and fair amounts of Fe and Mn. Carbon and oxygen isotopic values suggest a subsurface interstitial formation for the digenetic carbonates in an essentially closed system. Based on all accumulated data it is suggested that anoxic marine waters were retained in the sediment pores for a long time after deposition, thus enhancing the preservation of significant amounts of the original organic matter.

In contrast, Rhaetian tidal-flat deposits hosting black shales display a clay component characterized by ordered illite-rich I/S and a carbonate mineralogy dominated by low-Mg calcite in the uppermost beds and by near-stoichiometric dolomite in the lowermost ones. Petrographie, chemical and isotopic data indicate early cementation in an oxidizing phreatic environment and lower down in the sequence pervasive dolomitization in a sabkha-type environment.

Sm–Nd isotopic studies of granites within the late Precambrian, Cadomian, orogenic belt of the North Armorican Massif (northwestern France) and Channel Islands reveal differences between arc-related granite magmatism in outboard terranes and intracrustal granite magmatism in inboard terranes. Late Cadomian (c. 570 Ma), arc-related granitoids exhibit a range of εnd ( - 2 to - 6) and Nd model ages (TDM 1.0–1.3 Ga) reflecting variable contamination between late Precambrian mantle derived magmas and ancient (c. 2.0 Ga?) continental crust. The contamination did not involve exposed granitic Icartian basement to anygreat degree, a more likely contaminant being unexposed lower crust of intermediate to acidic granulitic composition, or early Cadomian plutons which were themselves contaminated by lower crust. Voluminous granites of the Mancellian region (c. 550–540 Ma) share common isotopic characteristics (εNd -4 to -7, TDM 1.5–1.7 Ga) with migmatites and anatectic granites produced by partial melting of metasedimentary sequences within the St Malo region consistent with a common source.

The meta-igneous greenschists of the Start Complex, SouthDevon, are composed of a mineralogically uniform, but texturally variable, actinolite-epidote-albite assemblage with retrogressed variants containing chlorite, muscovite, sphene, carbonate and oxidized opaque minerals. Geochemically they represent a suite of relatively primitive tholeiites, exhibiting mild differentiation, depleted incompatible element abundances, and variable light rare-earth-element-depletion patterns comparable to modern basalts from normal spreading ridge segments (N-MORB). As the Start greenschistsexhibit a number of chemical similarities to the nearby Upper Palaeozoic Lizard ophiolite, and MORB-type clasts within the Rhenohercynian Zone generally, they may also represent local Variscan ocean crust, which floored smalloceanic basins that separated the Old Red Sandstone continent from the Armorican microplate to the south. The Start Complex could thus represent a previously unrecognized oceanic component to the Variscan orogenic belt (Rhenohercynian Zone) of Northwest Europe.

Previously undescribed collections of ammonites from the Corsicana Formation (Maastrichtian), the highest unit of the Cretaceous present in northeast Texas, U.S.A., include Eubaculites carinatus (Morton, 1834), Nostoceras (Nostoceras) major sp. nov., Glyptoxoceras sp., and Jeletzkytes sp. nov., which are new records for the unit. Other ammonites are Sphenodiscus lobatus (Tuomey, 1854), S. pleurisepta (Conrad, 1857), Trachyscaphites yorkensis (Stephenson, 1941), Discoscaphites conradi (Morton, 1834) and Baculites columna (Morton, 1834). Elements of the fauna are present in the Escondido Formation in Trans-Pecos Texas and northern Mexico, the Prairie Bluff Chalk in Alabama and Mississippi, the Owl Creek Formation in Mississippi, Tennessee and Missouri, and the Severn Formation in Maryland. In the U.S. Western Interior they occur in the Hoploscaphites nicolleti Zone, in the Fox Hills Formation.

The Bångonåive basement culmination, a doubly plunging antiform trending SW-NE in its southern part and SSW-NNE in the north, is part of a major Caledonian antiform in north-central Scandinavia. Crystalline, Proterozoic basement rocks (mainly syenite) are unconformably overlain by a sedimentary cover including tillites at the base, passing up into arkoses, quartzites and shales, capped by black phyllites. This sequence is correlated with the Varangian to Cambrian succession of the Baltoscandian platform farther east. Detailed mapping revealed a succession of five basement-cover horses, which represent the accessible part of an antiformal stack exposed beneath the Middle and Upper Allochthons and taken here as the Lower Allochthon structural level.

Caledonian deformation varies in intensity from penetrative near thrusts and in pelitic rocks to very weak in the more internal parts of the horses. A penetrative foliation is associated with the growth of white mica and rare biotite. This early fabric is overprinted by a mylonitic foliation related to localized shear zones, which separate the structural units within the Lower Allochthon. Stretching and mineral lineations trend WNW-ESE and related shear-sense criteria indicate transport (top) towards the ESE. Structural units (horses) are thrust into an antiformal stack and folded around the lowermost horse exposed, which is itself folded into an anticlinal lift-off fold. Towards the northeast, the antiformal stack is overprinted by a pop-up and an out-of-sequence thrust. The latter breached the roof of the Lower Allochthon and transported part of it over the Middle and Upper Allochthons. Further folds are associated with lateral and oblique ramps in the Lower Allochthon. These structures relate very well with the complex fold pattern previously observed in the higher structural units and thrust tectonics provides a straightforward genetic explanation for these folds. Therefore, earlier genetic models of the Bångonåive basement culmination as a simple imbrication of basement into higher units, as a buckling structure or as a gravitational dome structure are rejected here. The structural information, supported by gravimetric data, is consistent with an essentially flat regional detachment surface (2° dip) extending from the present external Caledonian margin to the base of the Bångonåive antiformal stack.

During the Eifelian and early Givetian, isolated mud mounds were established in a shallow basin, predominantly characterized by calcareous mudstone deposition, in the eastern Anti-Atlas of Morocco. The shapes, lithologies and faunas of these mounds stand in marked contrast with those of nearby contemporaneous, more widespread stromatoporoid/coral biostromes and small carbonate platforms adjacent to shallow shelves. With one exception, the mounds are totally exhumed, perfectly exposing their original morphologies. The smaller mounds are asymmetrical, with steeper northeastern and eastern (35–75°) than southwestern and western flanks (30–50°). The largest mound is almost circular and symmetrical, with scattered stromatoporoids, tabulate and rugose corals that do not form a rigid framework. Frame-builders are much rarer or absent in the smaller mounds. The nature and geographical distribution of the mounds reflects a bathymetric gradient, indicating that they formed on low-angle ramps which sloped gently into a shallow basin. A large reef mound was constructed at moderate depth, while small mud mounds accumulated in deeper water. Decrease of frame-builders and increase in pelagic organisms in the latter document the transition to a pelagic platform with reduced sedimentation at a short distance from the deepest mound.

Quantitative modelling of potential field data has been used to test and extend geological sections constructed for the new British Geological Survey Tectonic Map of Britain and Ireland. Three of the profiles cross part of the Anglo-Brabant Massif and provide new information on the nature of the pre-Mesozoic basement. A profile across southern England (passing just to the west of London) suggests that a significant contribution to observed gravity variations in the region results from changes in the thickness of relatively low density Lower Palaeozoic rocks. It also identifies a major deep-seated body with relatively high magnetic susceptibility and low density which is interpreted as a Precambrian cratonic core underlying the southeastern part of the Midlands Microcraton. Profiles across central and eastern England reveal major boundaries within the Precambrian basement, some of which coincide with structures mapped at surface. A number of intrusions of probable Caledonian age have been recognized, including bodies beneath the Widmerpool Gulf and The Wash. Those beneath The Wash appear to lie in a discrete basement region which separates belts of more magnetic basement lying to the northwest and southeast.

Within internal regions of orogenic belts, systems of ductile thrusts and folds may form which are geometrically and kinematically analogous to those observed in foreland thrust belts. The Moine Nappe of Sutherland, northwestern Scotland, developed during WNW-directed Caledonian displacements under amphibolite facies conditions. Broad zones of mylonite associated with the ductile Ben Hope and Moine thrusts both contain numerous, small-scale folds which can be attributed to transient flow perturbations. It is possible to isolate and differentiate generations of such folds basedon their association with particular major thrust zones and'or their geometry. In regions of lower strain between these thrusts, there are a series ofkilometre-scale buckle folds, the axial traces of which define arcuate trends. Those with hinges orthogonal to transport are northwestvergent, whilst those plunging subparallel to the mineral lineation display variable vergence. The spatial distribution of these geometries suggests a causal relationship with displacements on specific underlying thrusts. We propose that they reflect larger (kilometre-scale), and possibly longer-lived flow perturbations. The transport parallel folds are persistent features that often centre on earlier structural culminations, and are thought to reflect components of differential shear. The most prominent set of regional buckle folds root downwards into the ductile Moine Thrust, and openly refold the structurally overlying Ben Hope Thrust and its associated buckle folds, thus supporting a foreland propagating sequence of ductile displacements.

Biostratigraphic study and re-examination of 22 late Eocene to early Oligocene sections provides data in support of three and possibly a fourth late Eocene impact events in the G. index Zone during a period of about 1 Ma of the middle Priabonian between 34.7 and 35.7 Ma. No major species extinctions or significant species abundance changes directly coincide with these impact events. Species extinctions are gradual and selective, affecting primarily cool-temperature-intolerant surface dwellers. These extinctions began with the onset of global cooling during the early middle Eocene and culminated near the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. The global cooling was associated with the isolation of Antarctica as Australia moved northward, the development of a circum-Antarctic circulation, growth of Antarctic ice sheet beginning by late middle Eocene time and a change from a thermospheric to thermohaline circulation. We find no evidence that the multiple late Eocene impact events directly contributed to the climatic deterioration already in progress.

Nodular chert from the Cueva-Bedón carbonate platform (late Turonian-earliest Coniacian) occurs above the type 1 sequence boundary and in association with a transgressive systems tract deposit. It formed by selective replacement of grainstones-packstones, and Thalassinoides burrow fillings. Other minor types of selective silicification include the replacement of anhydrite nodules, forming quartz geodes, and the partial or total replacement of oysters and inoceramids. The chert nodules consist predominantly of microquartz with volumetrically minor fibrous quartz (length-fast chalcedony) and megaquartz. The silica has a mainly biogenic source (siliceous sponge spicules and radiolarians). Lepisphere textures that are indicative of an intermediate opal-CT precursor are evident in chert nodules, which indicates the chert formed by a maturation process from opalA to opal-CT to quartz. The δ 18O values of microquartz suggest a precipitation from marine fluids. The fabric of quartz geodes consists of irregular bands of heterometric megaquartz, quartzine and lutecite spherulites, and a well developed band of petaloidal megaquartz that contains small anhydrite inclusions. Bivalve shells are replaced mainly by fibrousquartz (quartzine-lutecite), which forms extensive beekite rings. The silica source of the replaced fossils is also biogenic, but silicification couldhave occurred by direct quartz replacement without an opal-CT precursor. Field and petrographic evidence indicate that silicification was an early diagenetic process that affected both uncompacted and compacted sediments, andwas inhibited when the dolomitization began. There seems to exist a syncrony in age (late Turonian-earliest Coniacian) between the nodular chert in the Cueva-Bedón carbonate platform and the bedded and nodular chert ofthe Plentzia carbonate turbidites in the deeper Basque Arc.

The structure of the southern and central English Lake District is that of a southeast-facing monocline, named here the Westmorland Monocline. This 10 km wide zone of highly cleaved, southeast-dipping rocks separates gently dipping, poorly cleaved Borrowdale Volcanic Group to the north from extensively folded but regionally subhorizontal Windermere Group (foreland basin) rocks to the south. The monocline formed early in the local Acadian deformation sequence, and accommodates at least 8 km of uplift. It coincides with the steep concealed margin of the Lake District batholith. A major northwest-dipping shear zone is revealed in the deepest levels now exposed within the monocline, in the Skiddaw Group rocks of the Black Combe inlier.

The monocline has the characteristics of a mountain front, providing significant tectonic elevation across a foreland-dipping panel of rocks, with no hinterland-dipping thrust visible at the surface. We interpret the uplift as the consequence of a southeast-vergent thrust with a gently northwest-dipping ramp beneath the central Lake District, continuing southeastwards as a flat detachment beneath the Windermere Group. A displacement up the ramp of about 20 km is accommodated by backthrusting within the monocline and by shortening within the Windermere Group of the hangingwall southeast of the monocline. The tip lies beyond the limit of the Lower Palaeozoic inlier, beneath Carboniferous cover.

This paper examines the potential use of the variation of the co parameter of graphite with temperature for geothermometric estimations. Two examples are presented in which graphite geothermometry, at low-and high-temperature conditions, is tested against other widely used geothermometers. The results obtained indicate that, at low-grade metamorphic conditions, the co parameter of graphite is affected by other factors besides the temperature, so graphite geothermometry (based on co) can only be used in such rocks for qualitative estimations. For temperatures above 500 °C, when the fully ordered graphite appears, there is a close correlation between the temperature estimations based on the structural ordering of graphite and from mineral-exchange geothermometry. The temperature calculations based on the co parameter of graphite are not influenced by factors (such as pressure or retrometamorphism) that clearly affect the exchange equilibria. Thus, graphite thermometry is a useful tool, for temperatures above 500 °C.

Six sections through lower Ordovician shale and limestone at Hunneberg have been sampled for conodonts. Forty-nine limestone horizons and 34 shale surface samples yielded over 40000 conodont elements. The degree of biostratigraphic resolution permitted further subdivision of the post-Tremadoc Paroistodus proteus Zone into four successive intervals. Preliminary studies of coeval rocks in other areas of Sweden show that this subdivision applies elsewhere as well. Comparison with published sections from, for example, Newfoundland, Estonia and Kazakhstan indicates that the fourfold subdivision of the P. proteus Zone proposed here could significantly increase the correlation accuracy, even internationally, within this critical part of the Ordovician. Graptolites and trilobites found together with the conodonts at Hunneberg indicated that the new subdivision could help to correlate biostratigraphic units based on these fossil groups. Thus the two lower intervals of the P. proteus Zone correspond to the M. (E.) armata trilobite Zone, and the upper two are approximately equal to the M. (V.) planilimbata Zone. The base of the T. phyllograptoides graptolite Zone at Hunneberg lies close to the boundary between the upper middle and uppermost intervals of the P. proteus Zone, but the graptolitic chronozonal boundary may be lower. The overlying Prioniodus elegans Zone is mainly represented by graptolitic shale at Hunneberg, but conodont faunas have been found in it, and co-occurrences of conodonts and graptolites have been noted.

Lower-Middle Cambrian regional stages of the Iberian Peninsula (Cordubian, Ovetian, Marianian, Bilbilian, Acadoparadoxides and Solenopleuropsidae stages) are now reconsidered in the light of new stratigraphic and palaeontological (trace fossils, trilobites and archaeocyaths) studies. These stages are re-described with selected stratotypes and chronostratigraphic boundaries. The names Leonian and Caesaraugustian are formally proposed to replace the provisional stages of Acadoparadoxides and Solenopleuropsidae, respectively. A correlation chart of the Lower-Middle Cambrian lithostratigraphic units from the Iberian Peninsula is also presented. Two regessive-transgressive cycles are proposed to explain the lithological and palaeontological peculiarities through the Lower-Middle Cambrian sequence in the Iberian Peninsula.

The late Precambrian–early Palaeozoic Monian Supergroup of the Mona Complex is a thick sequence of flysch-type sediments and metavolcanic rocks which were deposited during the late Precambrian–early Palaeozoic and deformed during the late Precambrian and Caledonian (Ordovician/Silurian) orogenies. The Monian Supergroup includes tectonically emplaced, geographically separated outcrops of metabasalt/andesite, gabbro and serpentinized ultramafic rocks all of ophiolite affinity. The major units of the Mona Complex are separated by important faults/fault zones which may represent terrane boundaries. New chemical analyses, together with existing ones, show that the metabasalts and meta-andesites from the older New Harbour Group of north Anglesey have characteristics of suprasubduction zone arc eruptives whereas the metabasalts from the younger Gwna Group of south Anglesey and Lleyn have MORB geochemistry. It is suggested that these volcanic rocks were produced during the late Precambrian–early Palaeozoic development of the lapetus Ocean and emplaced as separate terranes during its closure.
