One of the major metamorphic terranes of the Bohemian Massif, the Erzgebirge, is interpreted to record a subducted part of a Palaeozoic margin of Gondwana. A geochemical study on non-calcareous metasediments from the various metamorphic units from lower greenschist to granulite facies metamorphism supports a recently established thrust model. Geochemical discrimination and correlation from the metasediments of the Erzgebirge suggest repetition of an early Palaeozoic metasedimentary sequence in metamorphic thrust units. This new finding is in line with recent radiometric dating of intercalated metarhyolitic rocks, which yielded ages of around 480 Ma. It is furthermore supported by correlation with a low-grade standard section in Thuringia, which represents the transition from an orogenic belt to a passive margin setting, with highly mature sediments. Significant geochemical signatures have been identified in three different lithotypes, which reappear in at least three metamorphic units of the Erzgebirge. Geochemical correlation of these units was established using simple comparison of averages and with statistical techniques. The identification of significant geochemical signatures from different lithotypes in metamorphic suites has important implications for terrane analysis and reconstruction of ancient tectonic settings.

The repetition of lithologies and their distinct chemical compositions in progressively metamorphosed units is useful for examining element mobility during Barrovian metamorphism. Statistical comparison implies that Li is progressively depleted from the greenschist to amphibolite facies, whereas Ca exhibits some enrichment. All the other elements studied are considered to be immobile.

In extensional tectonic settings, vertical movements of the earth's surface are largely controlled by rates of strain. Extensional strain rates within the Larderello geothermal area, located in inner parts of the Northern Apennines, have been evaluated together with uplift rates and 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages. Results indicate that extensional strain rates have been relatively low (5.8×10−17 s−1), since the middle Pliocene. Differential uplift rates are estimated to have been high (c. 0.2 mm/year). Strain and uplift rates within the Larderello region are consistent with the regional tectonic framework. The low strain rate, rapid uplifting and high heat flow within southern Tuscany can be explained by an eastward dipping lithospheric shear maintained since at least middle Pliocene times.

Combined structural, geochemical and isotopic studies have allowed an understanding of the timing and nature of an orogen-scale fault array. The results indicate that the deformation loci within the internal western Alps, during the Alpine collision, occurred as a foreland propagating thrust sequence. The east to west deformation migration within the internal zones is apparently in-sequence in relation to the external zones. Rb–Sr white mica dating of syn-kinematic greenschist-facies mineral assemblages from the Basal Briançonnais Thrust indicate that thrusting ceased between 27 and 32 Ma, several million years after shearing in the hinterland and several million years prior to shearing in the foreland. The Briançonnais Domain, which constitutes the hanging wall to the Basal Briançonnais Thrust, preserves two major shearing episodes. The first, with a top-to-the-northwest overshear, has been tentatively dated at 45 Ma. The second, a very pervasive, east–west orientated, greenschist-facies event was previously dated at 34 Ma on the hinterland margin of the Briançonnais Domain and has now been dated at 27–32 Ma on the foreland margin of the Briançonnais Domain. The period between 34 and 27 Ma apparently dates the migration of deformation through the relict European passive margin, represented by the Briançonnais Domain. This is believed to be in response to overthrusting of Adria/Africa and its associated subduction complex. Structural mapping indicates that the present Basal Briançonnais Thrust in the Col du Petit St Bernard region, Franco-Italian Alps, is a break-back thrust which cuts through an already imbricated pile. Geochronological evidence suggests that the early imbrication of the Briançonnais stratigraphy occurred prior to full interaction of the European and Adria/African plates, that is, during subduction, docking and escape from the subduction complex under Adria. Therefore, although the present Basal Briançonnais Thrust is a break-back thrust in terms of local structural geometries, it is an in-sequence foreland-propagating structure. Geochronological, micro-structural and micro-chemical data indicate that the Briançonnais Domain in the Col du Petit St Bernard zone is formed from granitoid material which intruded and cooled at approximately 320 Ma. During the Alpine event, deformation and metamorphism were insufficient to affect the Sr isotopic system. This suggests that this portion of the Briançonnais Domain was probably subducted to much shallower depths and underwent much less pervasive deformation than the other internal European basement material.

Two successive assemblages of vertebrate microremains have been found at Grozon (Jura, northeastern France). Palynological analysis confirms a Norian age for the first one and a Rhaetian age for the second. A new species of neoselachian shark, Grozonodon candaui, is erected from isolated teeth of Norian age, based on their enameloid ultrastructure. Distinctive parallel-fibred enameloid is recognized among teeth previously assigned to Hybodus minor, which therefore represents another early neoselachian shark. These structural characteristics confirm the close relationship of hybodont and neoselachian sharks.

The c. 1.1 Ga Kgwebe metavolcanic rocks exposed in the northwest of Botswana are late Kibaran rocks. They represent a bimodal suite of Within-Plate low titanium-phosphorus (LTP) continental tholeiites and post-orogenic Within-Plate high-K rhyolites. The chemical compositions of the Kgwebe mafic rocks are characterized by low values of Ce/Pb (<10) and high La/Nb ratios (average c. 2, maximum 4). Mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB)-normalized spidergrams show marked enrichment in mobile elements (Sr, K, Rb, Ba) and negative anomalies in Nb. These features suggest they may have originated in a mantle, enriched during a previous subduction event. The Kgwebe metarhyolites are marked by Y>60 ppm, Sr/Y<1, Rb/Th>20 and high K-contents. They cannot therefore be the product of melting of sediments or a subducting slab. It is inferred that they represent felsic magmas resulting from melting of Mesoproterozoic (Kibaran) calcalkaline rocks underplated in the middle and/or lower crust. The Kgwebe bimodal metavolcanic rocks pre-date the Neoproterozoic Ghanzi Group rocks which are correlated with the lower part of the Damara sequence. The chemical composition and field relations suggest that these metavolcanic rocks were emplaced during a late orogenic collision-associated extensional collapse. This collapse affected a crust thickened during the Kibaran orogeny in the Namaqua-Natal Belt of southwest Africa.

The Mesoproterozoic Kibaran belt in southwest Rwanda (Central Africa) consists of two contrasting metamorphic sequences. The first is essentially composed of weakly deformed, low-grade pelitic rocks with many quartzitic intercalations and some volcano-sedimentary sequences. The second consists of medium- to high-grade metamorphic metasediments and gneisses, intruded by sheared granitoids. Existing geological maps are of limited use in understanding the evolution of this part of the Kibaran belt. A combination of airborne γ-spectrometry data with Landsat TM imagery readily distinguishes known lithologies, and in particular detects two distinct granite types. Trace element data for one granite type does not correspond with known petrochemical trends of Kibaran granites, and may belong to a pre-Kibaran basement. The combining of these data with a recently published schematic geological map of the northeast Kibaran belt and re-interpreted field structural data, suggests a model for the Kibaran orogenic evolution in terms of extensional detachment tectonics and associated metamorphic core complexes.

Two Proterozoic terranes with different metamorphic histories are distinguished from geological mapping in southwestern Wedel Jarlsberg Land: a northern greenschist facies terrane and a southern amphibolite facies terrane which has been overprinted by greenschist facies metamorphism. To better characterize the tectonothermal history of these terranes we have obtained new 40Ar/39Ar mineral dates from this area. A muscovite separate from the northern terrane yielded a Caledonian plateau age of 432±7 Ma. The southern terrane yielded significantly older 40Ar/39Ar ages with three muscovite plateau dates of 584±14 Ma, 575±15 Ma, and 459±9 Ma, a 484±5 Ma biotite plateau date, and a 616±17 Ma hornblende plateau date. The oldest thermochronological dates are over 300 Ma younger than the age of amphibolite facies metamorphism and therefore probably do not represent uplift-related cooling. Instead, the Vendian dates correlate well with a regionally widespread magmatic and metamorphic/thermal resetting event recognized within Caledonian complexes of northwestern Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. The apparent Ordovician dates are interpreted to represent partial resetting, suggesting that late Caledonian greenschist facies overprinting of the southern terrane was of variable intensity.

This study presents new Rb–Sr age data concerning the metamorphic evolution of the Attic-Cycladic Crystalline Belt which represents a complex polymetamorphic terrane within the Alpidic orogenic belt of the Hellenides. Two major groups of tectonic units can be distinguished. Metamorphism in parts of the upper units is commonly considered as a Cretaceous event. In contrast, the group of lower units experienced Tertiary high-pressure metamorphism which was followed by a medium-pressure overprint. We focus on the island of Tinos where a representative spectrum of the rock units found in the Cyclades is exposed in three tectonic units: the Upper Unit, the Intermediate Unit and the Basal Unit. The complete range of tectono-metamorphic and magmatic events affecting the Attic-Cycladic Crystalline Belt is documented by numerous petrological and tectonic studies. Phyllites and phyllonites from the ophiolitic Upper Unit yielded Rb–Sr apparent ages (phengite–whole-rock) between c. 92 and 21 Ma. The older age differs from the Cretaceous dates reported for upper unit rocks elsewhere in the Cyclades. It is suggested that the sequence studied belongs to the Jurassic ophiolites of the Hellenides rather than to Cretaceous occurrences. The spread to younger ages is related to non-pervasive rejuvenation and resetting of the Rb–Sr system during tectonic juxtaposition of the Upper Unit over the Intermediate Unit. The youngest age obtained so far for a sample from the Upper Unit (21 Ma) is believed to approximate the timing of tectonic juxtaposition which probably occurred during a regional greenschist-facies episode producing a pervasive overprint in the structurally lower tectonic unit. The major phyllite/meta-gabbro/serpentinite sequence of the Upper Unit is interpreted as an emplacement-related ductile shear zone which experienced reworking under brittle conditions. In the Intermediate Unit, a gradient in Rb–Sr ages from top (c. 40 Ma) to the bottom (c. 22 Ma) was recognized, which is interpreted to represent greater effects of fluid infiltration and overprinting in the lower parts of this unit, possibly controlled by variable intensity of deformation which might be related to tectonic juxtaposition onto the Basal Unit. We suggest that synmetamorphic stacking of all three tectonic units took place during an Oligocene–Miocene greenschist event. Extensional deformation continued after tectonic stacking and after intrusion of the main granite, as is indicated by a Rb–Sr whole-rock isochron (15.1∓0.6 Ma) for a ductilely deformed garnet-bearing leucogranite from the marginal parts of the main undeformed pluton. Application of the Rb–Sr dating technique provided no unequivocal evidence that previously published Eocene K–Ar and 40Ar–39Ar dates for high-pressure phengites from the lower units are significantly contaminated with excess argon.

A sheeted dolerite dyke swarm has been discovered at Duniewick Fort, Ballantrae. It forms part of the Early Ordovician Ballantrae Complex of Ayrshire, southwest Scotland. Asymmetric chilled margins, parallel to sub-parallel dykes and multiple dykes (dykes within dykes) are found. Although the mineralogy has been altered by metamorphism, the geochemistry is comparable with modern day back-arc marginal basin basalt. Cross-cutting sills have the chemistry of within-plate basalt. The regional geological setting suggests that an ophiolite sequence has been dismembered and incorporated into a serpentinite mélange. This is the first description of a 100% sheeted dyke complex (senso stricto) from the Ballantrae ophiolite.

Spot sampling of the Red Crag Formation at Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex (= Walton Cray) has revealed a diverse record of dinoflagellates, pollen, and other palynomorphs. Pollen from a basal horizon is dominated by Pinus, but also contains high values of Sciadopitys and a small but diverse component of deciduous mesothermal trees. Taxodium is more common at 2 m above the base of the Red Crag and may represent a different part of a climate cycle. A mild- to warm-temperate climate is inferred for the Walton assemblages and a correlation with the Reuverian B pollen substage (Late Pliocene, 3.0 to >2.6 Ma) is demonstrated, thereby constraining the timing of an important marine transgression in eastern England.

Dinoflagellates from the basal horizon and from 2 m above the base of the Red Crag generally indicate a restricted marine environment, but outer neritic to oceanic dinoflagellates are occasionally present, and imply the penetration of more saline North Atlantic water masses into the southern North Sea basin. Mild- to warm-temperate conditions are indicated by the presence of several thermophilic species. The Walton assemblages have strong similarities with those of the mid-Pliocene Coralline Crag Formation of eastern England, but differ in the presence of Bitectatodinium tepikiense, which, along with an apparently reduced species richness, gives evidence of cooler conditions. A number of thermophilic species at Walton are not reported from younger Pliocene deposits in eastern England, perhaps reflecting a less equable climate after Northern Hemisphere cooling at 2.55 Ma.

The subsidence and stratigraphic evolution in an eastern section of the Subbetic Zone (External Zones of the Betic Cordilleras, Spain) during Jurassic and early Cretaceous times have been examined. The sediments have been deposited on a passive margin undergoing rifting. The data indicate that the activity was complex and spasmodic, with two distinct rift and post-rift phases. The beginning of the first syn-rift and post-rift phases are recorded by two regional sedimentary breaks, in the Late Carixian and in the Bathonian, respectively. The second rift and post-rift phases began, with less clearly defined limits, during the Oxfordian and at the Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary, respectively.

Little is known about the cleavage–fold relationships in the Lower Palaeozoic Brabant Massif, primarily because of the scarcity of suitable exposures. Moreover, to date, folds have only been described in the Ordovician and Silurian sequences along the southern extremity of the basement. However, excavation works for the construction of the TGV(railway)-track south of Brussels created an opportunity to study cleavage–fold relationships in the Lower Cambrian terrigenous series (Tubize Group) in a more central part of the Brabant Massif. The structural features observed seemed inconsistent with the suspected regional trends. Primarily, a divergent cleavage fan was observed in a region thought to have a regular cleavage attitude. The symmetrical but divergent disposition of the cleavage with regard to the fold hinges is explained by flexural folding of a pre-existing bedding-parallel compaction fabric. Cleavage development and folding are considered synchronous. The divergent cleavage fan reflects local strain variations. Also the steeply plunging hinge lines of the open, subangular folds are seemingly inconsistent with the regional trend characterized by subhorizontal fold hinges. Taking into account the structural position of the fold assemblage in the subvertical limb of a large-scale, upright, isoclinal fold structure, the fold assemblage is interpreted as an incongruous parasitic feature. The steeply plunging hinge lines are considered to be caused by fold hinge rotation during progressive coaxial deformation. Although this incongruous fold assemblage with its divergent cleavage fan is localized, it provides important information on both local and regional deformation circumstances in this part of the Anglo-Brabant Fold Belt.

Eight Lower Silurian graptolite biozones (triangulatus, convolutus, linnaei, turriculatus, crispus, griestoniensis, tullbergi and spiralis) and three subzones (runcinatus–gemmatus, palmeus and hispanicus) have been recognized in the Sierra Menera, Nevera, and Tremedal massifs in the Castilian Branch of the Iberian Cordillera (Western Iberian Cordillera). Early Silurian, Rhuddanian low-diversity normalograptid faunas are also present and these, together with the rich graptolite faunas of the Aeronian triangulatus and convolutus biozones, come from black, shaly intercalations within the quartzose sandstones of the upper part of the Los Puertos Quartzite. Telychian graptolite biozones have been recognized in the succeeding black-shale sequence of the Bádenas Formation. Diachroneity of the transition from sandstones to black shales is dated by graptolites. It ranges from about the base to at least the top of the linnaei Biozone. We suggest that the Lower Silurian black shales of the Western Iberian Cordillera were deposited in a shallow, shelf environment, not much deeper than that of presumably storm-influenced sandstones of the Los Puertos Quartzite.

The northern, James Ross Island region of the Larsen Basin, on the eastern, back-arc margin of the Antarctic Peninsula magmatic arc, includes one of the thickest and most complete Upper Cretaceous sedimentary successions exposed in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the southern part of the basin remains poorly known, mainly owing to inaccessibility and lack of exposure. Table Nunatak, an isolated, 1-km-long, 400-m-wide outcrop at the tip of Kenyon Peninsula, is the only known exposure of Upper Cretaceous or younger strata in this region. The 62-m-thick succession exposed there is assigned to the newly defined Table Nunatak Formation. It consists mainly of sharp-based, amalgamated beds of fine-grained sandstone up to 2.8 m thick, with subordinate intervals of intensely bioturbated mudstone. Wave ripples are present at some levels, and locally developed swaley cross-stratification provides evidence for storm-generated combined-flow deposition. However, most sandstone beds appear to be internally structureless apart from normal grading, and are interpreted as the direct suspension deposits of highly sediment-charged storm- and/or flood-related flows. The succession represents relatively nearshore deposition, probably at the mouth of a river or deltaic distributary channel. Charcoalified plant debris, abundant at the tops of some sandstone beds, suggests a periodically wildfire-swept hinterland forested largely by coniferous trees. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages indicate a late Santonian age, and suggest correlation with the basal part of the Lachman Crags Member of the Santa Marta Formation (Marambio Group) on James Ross Island. Palaeocurrents, sandstone petrography and the high sediment supply rate proposed for the Table Nunatak Formation, suggest a relatively high-relief source area to the west, with large-scale erosion of granitoid plutons and metamorphic rocks, possibly related to arc uplift during a mid-Cretaceous compressional episode. The formation is evidence of a major southward extension of the Upper Cretaceous strata exposed in the northern Larsen Basin, and suggests lateral continuity of shallow-marine deposition for at least 500–600 km along the Weddell Sea margin of the Antarctic Peninsula in Santonian times.

New geological field mapping along a 24-km-long portion of the Mere Fault, in the northern part of the Wessex Basin, together with seismic reflection and other subsurface data, allow an analysis of displacement, both along the length and down the dip of the reactivated fault. The principal segments of the Mere Fault dip south at about 70° and display components of both syndepositional normal displacement and later reversal of movement during basin contraction. Minimum estimates of the largest down-to-the-south displacements range from less than 100 m at the surface to 350 m at the top of the pre-Permian basement and these values decrease to zero toward the fault segment tips. Estimates that allow for reverse movement along the fault suggest that there must have been at least 500 m of normal displacement along the central portion of the segment. Stratigraphical separation at the surface indicates that the largest down-to-the-north displacements, associated with later fault reversal, are at least 200 m and occur in the east, where reversal of movement has taken place on an early, high-angle fault segment. In the west, the principal fault strands are eroded to deeper stratigraphical levels where largely normal slip is preserved and segments are linked by normal and oblique transfer faults. The Wardour Monocline was developed during basin contraction, in part by movement along a concealed fault segment, overstepping from the Mere Fault at the surface, and in part over a relay ramp between the two fault segments.

Microfossils obtained from dissolution of a limestone horizon from the lower Cambrian Allt y Shed Sandstone of the Llangynog Inlier, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, are identified as agglutinated foraminiferans. Two genera and three species are represented and are figured. These microfossils add further to the scanty record of Cambrian foraminiferans, but do not resolve the problem of the precise age of the Allt y Shed Sandstone.

Orogenesis is increasingly interpreted in terms of strain focusing, localization and partitioning processes. Such heterogeneous deformation is considered a consequence of the tectonic framework, with pre-existing structural and stratigraphic variability providing inherent zones of crustal weakness. Detailed structural investigation of Neoproterozoic Dalradian metasediments in the Glencolumbkille region, northwest Ireland, enables patterns of reworking and strain localization to be assessed in terms of four overprinting ductile deformation episodes. A well-defined and intricate Dalradian stratigraphy provides readily distinguishable markers which not only focus deformation along marked rheological boundaries, but also aid in the definition and identification of resultant geometries. Overall structural and stratigraphic relationships show that whilst D1 was not associated with major structures, D2 is related to north–northeast directed folding and ductile thrusting resulting in a major phase of crustal thickening and almandine-amphibolite facies metamorphism. Structures generated during D2 deformation subsequently became the locus of intense D3 strain and were reactivated in an oblique sense associated with south or southwest directed translations. Local overprinting relationships clearly demonstrate S2 fabrics being transposed by S3 resulting in a composite foliation over large areas. Similarly, the L2 mineral lineation is abruptly transposed by L3 over relatively small distances indicating high D3 strain gradients and the susceptibility of lineations to reworking. The final stage of ductile deformation (D4) which was increasingly localized and focused into earlier (D2−D3) high strain zones, is marked by a pronounced phase of sinistral transpression associated with clockwise cleavage and minor fold transection of northwest verging upright folds. Sinistral shear is strongly partitioned in to the steep limbs of mesoscopic F4 folds. The detailed investigation of structures generated within such multiply deformed and reworked zones provides evidence of both the kinematic and tectonic evolution of regional deformation systems.

For contouring the relief of small palaeontological or sedimentological objects the method of Shadow Moiré Topography, already successfully applied in other fields, is recommended. When a whitened three-dimensional object is seen or photographed through a grating and the illumining light bundle passes through the same grating, equidistant planes of shadow can be produced. The latter generate contour lines on the object where they intersect its surface. The theory of Shadow Moiré Topography is explained by the principles of geometric optics. A simple and cost effective apparatus is proposed and examples of contoured objects are figured.

Sedimentary organic matter deriving from tubes of sabelliditids, vendotaenids, sapropelic films and kerogens was extracted by acid processing from Upper Vendian siliciclastic successions in the East European Platform. Elemental composition obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) displays the increasing cobalt (Co) concentration from 1 ppm at the bottom of Upper Vendian succession to about 800 ppm in the uppermost part near the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. This distribution is recorded in all studied successions and is not related to resistant minerals that survived acid treatment. The enrichment in Co and other metals in the sedimentary organic matter is inferred to be caused by the bloom of cyanobacterial microbiota, and bonding of metals in decaying sedimentary organic matter during pre-burial bacterial reworking and post-burial early diagenesis in a low energy, stagnant depositional basin during Kotlin times. The positive Ceanom in probable benthic sabelliditids, and the exceptional preservation of sedimentary organic matter from Kotlinian strata, indicate the anaerobic conditions during their sedimentation. Clear correlations between 87Sr/86Sr, δ13C and Co imply the secondary isotopic signatures of Sr and C in sedimentary organic matter deriving from a restricted epicontinental marine basin.
