The Flagstone Bench Formation ranges in age from earliest Triassic to Norian (Late Triassic) and is exposed in the Beaver Lake area of the northern Prince Charles Mountains. This sandstone-dominated formation rests conformably on the Bainmedart Coal Measures and represents the upper part of the Permian–Triassic Amery Group. It is divisible into three members: the Ritchie, Jetty and McKelvey members (in ascending order). Nine sedimentary facies assignable to three facies associations (major channel, crevasse/fan and flood-basin deposits) are recognized within the formation. Ritchie Member sedimentation took place during a transition from consistently hygric to seasonally dry conditions and the unit comprises sandstone-dominated, sheet-like channel deposits interspersed with few, thin, mottled, haematite-rich flood-basin siltstones. Deposition took place under fluctuating discharge conditions chiefly within the channel tracts of axially (northwesterly/northeasterly) flowing, low-sinuosity braided rivers. The Jetty Member shows a gross upward-fining profile dominated in the lower part by poorly sorted pebbly sandstones and in the upper part by ferruginous mudcracked siltstones, mottled palaeosols, calcrete and thin massive sandstone sheets. This unit reflects deposition of easterly directed alluvial fans and extensive flood-basin silt under a semi-arid climatic regime. The Upper Triassic sandstone-dominated McKelvey Member shows a return to axial drainage along the Lambert Graben with sedimentation occurring primarily within low-sinuosity braided channel tracts under wetter climatic conditions.

Minor Pliocene dacites from Crommyonia mark the western end of the South Aegean volcanic arc. They form small lava domes and flows generally associated with extensional faults. An older group (3.6–4 Ma) occurs in the west and a younger group (2.3–2.8 Ma) in the east. Volcanic rocks of similar age are found at Aegina, Poros and Milos in the western part of the South Aegean arc, whereas volcanism in the eastern part of the arc is of Quaternary age. The two groups of rocks at Crommyonia are chemically distinct. Both groups contain multiple generations of plagioclase. Both have εNd (−8.0 to −10.6) that is much more negative than any other rocks in the South Aegean arc and model ages that are similar to those for many Miocene extensional granites of the Cyclades. The model ages are interpreted to reflect a mid-Proterozoic mantle event recognized elsewhere in the Hellenides. The Crommyonia dacitic magmas represent the first stages of melting of deep lithosphere as a result of both subduction-related hydrous fluids and extensional decompression. Plagioclase compositions suggest important magma evolution in a base-of-crust magma chamber, where the strong crustal Nd isotope signature was acquired. With time, asthenospheric sources that upwelled as a result of extension played an increasingly important role in determining the isotopic characteristics of the arc volcanism.

Late Ordovician volcanic rocks of the English Lake District typically have a magnetic remanence dominated by a single characteristic component. Previous investigations have interpreted this remanence as both of primary (pre-folding) and secondary origin. Palaeomagnetic field tests have been conducted on (a) andesite blocks from an autobrecciated lava top, (b) andesite blocks in mass-flow breccias, and (c) fault-blocks tilted during Ordovician caldera collapse to establish the time of remanence acquisition. All three tests show that the lavas retain a magnetization acquired during initial cooling: magnetizations of the breccias are coherent within clasts and random between clasts, whilst magnetizations of the tilted fault blocks converge with better that 95% confidence when corrected for the effects of caldera collapse. In contrast, the volcaniclastic sedimentary and pyroclastic rocks possess an Ordovician secondary remanence acquired after strata had been tilted by volcano-tectonic subsidence. A distributed sample of 65 andesite and basalt sheets through the Borrowdale Volcanic Group has a mean remanence direction D/I=341.9/−48.9° (α95=4.0°) yielding a positive fold test and a palaeomagnetic pole at 12.7°E, 4.3°S (dp/dm=3.5/5.3°). A progressive steepening of the palaeofield direction is recorded during emplacement of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group (∼I=−39° to I=−51°) which continued into the interval of volcanotectonic overprinting (I=−62°); the equivalent motion of Eastern Avalonia is ∼20° into higher southerly latitudes.

Both the Eycott and Borrowdale volcanic groups exhibit uniform normal polarity throughout. Correlation with the geomagnetic time scale for the Ordovician restores the broad correlation between the two groups by constraining their emplacement and partial overprinting to a single long normal polarity chron occupying the Nemagraptus gracilis and earlier part of the Diplograptus multidens biozones (late Llandeilo and early Caradoc). All the volcanism, therefore, occurred within a period of no more than ∼5 Ma. The palaeomagnetic evidence confirms that the Borrowdale Volcanic Group was affected by both syn-volcanic deformation (caldera collapse) and regional compressive deformation prior to deposition of the (late Ordovician–Silurian) Windermere Supergroup. The succession of primary and secondary Ordovician palaeomagnetic poles from the Lake District inlier defines an anticlockwise apparent polar wander (APW) loop with the apex correlating with ‘soft’ closure of the Iapetus Ocean and late Ordovician deformation. The APW paths from Avalonia and Baltica converge at this point as subduction ceased and the arc subsided beneath the sea after mid-Caradoc times.

New data implying crustal activation of Eastern Avalonia along the Anglo-Brabant fold belt are presented. Late Ordovician subduction-related magmatism in East Anglia and the Brabant Massif, coupled with accelerated subsidence in the Anglia Basin and in the Brabant Massif during Silurian time, indicate a foreland basin development. Final collision resulted in folding, cleavage development and thrusting during the mid-Lochkovian to mid-Eifelian. In the southeast of the Anglo-Brabant fold belt, Acadian deformation produced basin inversion and the regional antiformal structure of the Brabant Massif. The uplift, inferred from the sedimentology, petrography and reworked palynomorphs in the Lower Devonian of the Dinant Synclinorium is confirmed by illite crystallinity studies. The tectonic model discussed implies the presence of two subduction zones in the eastern part of Eastern Avalonia, one along the Anglo-Brabant fold belt and another under the North Sea in the prolongation of the North German–Polish Caledonides.

The Tremadoc to early Llanvirn is the time interval in the Ordovician for which a global acritarch distribution pattern can be proposed. It is possible to differentiate a high latitude, cold- to temperate-water realm and a low latitude, warm-water realm. The cold-water assemblages, recorded from numerous localities at the northern border of Gondwana in the southern hemisphere, include some diagnostic morphotypes, such as Arbusculidium filamentosum, Arkonia, Aureotesta, Coryphidium-Vavrdovella, Dicrodiacrodium, Frankea and Striatotheca. Assemblages related to warm-water areas are described from Canada, the United States, northern China, Australia, and Baltica. Although a distinction of separate provinces within the cold-water and warm-water realms is difficult, the differentiation between these two units appears evident and a distinction of the assemblages from peri-Gondwana and the microfloras from Baltica is possible. This enables a recognition of the Trans-European Suture Zone in the early to middle Ordovician.

The Kruuse Fjord Gabbro Complex is a composite intrusion of layered gabbro and troctolite with subordinate ultramafic rocks and minor trondhjemitic bodies. It was emplaced into Archaean continental crust of East Greenland during early Tertiary rifting of Greenland from Eurasia. The work to date has identified an outer gabbro series and an inner troctolite series, and these are separated by a narrow zone of trondhjemitic intrusions. In the southeast, the partially crystallized cumulates of the gabbro series were intruded by a lenticular, ultramafic pluton 800 m in thickness. Volumetrically minor, syenite–trachyandesite net-veined dykes and later, diabase dykes cross-cut the plutonic rocks. Structural and topographic features suggest that the layered rocks were affected by synmagmatic subsidence and deformation but not by monoclinal coastal flexure.

The gabbro series is composed of a marginal gabbro unit, about 20 m wide, bordering more than a 2 km thickness of layered olivine and magnetite gabbro cumulates. The marginal gabbro is interpreted to be chilled magma. The layered cumulates are the product of repeated injections of magma that fractionated in an open-system magma chamber. Anorthositic and troctolitic layers in the lower part of the sequence may represent inputs of magma and suggest that the order of cumulus mineral crystallization was (1) plagioclase (An39–85), (2) olivine (Fo46–82), (3) augite (Wo28–47En39–58Fs8–18 ) and (4) magnetite. The disappearance of cumulus magnetite and a reversal in mineral compositions at 1.5 km from the base of the succession suggests a major input of magma occurred at this height. In the troctolite series, the composition of cumulus minerals, mineral crystallization sequence and style of emplacement are similar to those in the gabbro series. The ultramafic pluton is composed of coarse-grained wehrlite, olivine melagabbro and troctolite that were formed by at least three injections of magma. The typical mineral crystallization sequence was (1) cumulus chromite and olivine (Fo84–88); (2) poikilitic chrome diopside (Wo29–51En43–63Fs3–13 ); and (3) intercumulus plagioclase (An75–90), phlogopite, apatite and localized disseminated sulphides containing Au and platinum-group elements.

Comparison of crystallization sequences and the major and trace element compositions of clinopyroxene suggests that the gabbroic and troctolitic rocks formed from a magma represented by the chilled marginal gabbro, a tholeiitic basalt magma similar to E-MORB, whereas the ultramafic rocks formed from a magma that was relatively enriched in incompatible trace elements and volatiles. The association of these two magma types is an example of bimodal mafic–ultramafic magmatism in a rifting environment.

Preliminary multidisciplinary investigations were carried out in a 105 m thick late Pleistocene terrestrial sequence in the Lamayuru basin, Ladakh Himalaya. Palaeomagnetic studies reveal a reversal of polarity at about 35 ka BP. This is the only report of this reversal event in the late Pleistocene terrestrial sequences of the Indian subcontinent. The valley fill sequence is the product of an interplay of lacustrine with fluvio-deltaic to colluvial processes. Four fossiliferous horizons have yielded ostracods and gastropods indicating shallow freshwater conditions. The Lamayuru lake was created by tectonically induced instability about 35–40 ka BP, an event that may be represented widely throughout the Himalaya.

The Slieve League peninsula in southwest Donegal affords some of the best exposures of the Dalradian Appin/Argyll Group transition available in Ireland. As a result, a refined stratigraphical column is available, allowing resolution of small- (metric-) scale imbrication of parts of the sequence. Large-scale D2 thrust nappes dominate the structure of the region, and the rocks have undergone multiple folding and complex cleavage development. In the Glencolumbkille valley, an imbricate duplex has been mapped in detail. Original intrusive relationships of metadolerite sheets controlled the geometry of subsquent deformation. A major ramp cuts up through the established stratigraphy and is controlled by a pre-D2 metadolerite intrusion. Throughout the region, major and minor ramps are localized by the metadolerite sheets. Within the thrust sheets, analysis of quartz petrofabric and clast fabrics in hangingwall mylonites within the Boulder Bed document kinematics and strain localization within the thrust sheets. Axial ratios in the dolomitic clasts increase up to a maximum of 30 [ratio ] 1 adjacent to the ductile thrusts. However, granite clast axial ratios are less pronounced adjacent to some of the shears, suggesting that strain may have partitioned into the matrix at high strains.

The transition from diagenesis to very low-grade metamorphism has been characterized by conodont colour alteration index (CAI), illite crystallinity (IC), clay-mineral assemblages and rock fabric in a transect (Cape Peñas–Cape Torres) located in the Cantabrian Zone (northwest Spain). IC values show a northwest to southeast change from epizonal to diagenetic values. CAI values show a general congruence for low- and high-grade areas. This correlation indicates that CAI values for the epizone are >5.5, the anchizone 5.5≥CAI>4, and the diagenetic zone ≤4. Cleavage develops in incompetent rocks with CAI values greater than 3, mainly by pressure solution. Temperature increases towards the inner parts of the orogen (towards the northwest) and is considered to be related to the tectonic superposition caused by thrusting and folding. A gradient of 35°C/km is inferred for the transect. In the southeastern sector of the section there are several thermal anomalies that are attributed to the presence of epithermal fluids.

Fore-arc magmatic sequences associated with high Mg number andesite lavas unconformably overlie LeMay Group accretionary complex in Alexander Island. High-resolution 40Ar/39Ar, U–Pb zircon, fission track and K–Ar ages demonstrate that subduction-related fore-arc magmatism migrated northwards along the length of Alexander Island between c. 80 Ma and c. 46 Ma. The magmatic rocks represent a third of the western margin of the Antarctic Peninsula magmatic arc and are critical to the understanding of the final phase of subduction along the southern Antarctic Peninsula margin. The onset of late Cretaceous magmatism is recorded by poorly exposed volcanic rocks on Monteverdi Peninsula (79.7±2.5 Ma). In central and northern Alexander Island, the magmatic rocks can be distinguished by the proportion, range and types of lithofacies present, and by the periods of magmatism represented. The volcanic rocks of the Colbert Mountains range in age from c. 69–62 Ma and are dominated by large volume dacitic and rhyolitic crystal-rich ignimbrites interpreted as caldera-fill deposits. Elgar Uplands sequences range in age from c. 55–50 Ma, and contain approximately equal proportions of pyroclastic deposits and less evolved (basaltic-andesite and andesite) lavas including high Mg number andesite lavas near the base of three sequences. The volcanic rocks of Finlandia Foothills probably represent the youngest calc-alkaline units on Alexander Island (48±2 Ma). The sequence is lithologically similar to the Elgar Uplands and also contains high Mg number andesite lavas, but it is dominated by polymict conglomerates, with minor lavas, which were deposited in a graben associated with regional extension. Plutonic rocks exposed in the Rouen Mountains, adjacent to the Elgar Uplands, yielded a U–Pb age of 56±3 Ma which is in discordance with a previously published Rb–Sr age (46±3 Ma), probably due to hydrothermal perturbation of the Rb–Sr system. Northwards migration of magmatism was caused by the progressive collision and subduction of three ridge segments prior to the previously reported ridge crest–trench collisions that occurred c. 20–30 Ma later and following which subduction ceased.

The Dowery Hill Member of metamorphosed basalt, dolerite and siltstone is here recognized as the oldest exposed volcanic unit of the Lower Ordovician Ribband Group, with a minimum age of early Arenig. Peperites and resedimented hydroclastic breccia demonstrate a volcanic origin for the basalts. The igneous rocks are tholeiitic, with a trace element geochemistry indicative of a subduction-modified fertile mantle source, which we interpret as recording an early stage of volcanic arc evolution. The member is therefore the oldest known component of the volcanic arc generated by subduction of Iapetus oceanic lithosphere under southeastern Ireland. Subduction started earlier than predicted by current plate tectonic models, and these should be re-evaluated.

The Bainmedart Coal Measures constitute the middle portion of the Permian–Triassic Amery Group, which represents the only substantial Palaeozoic–Mesozoic sedimentary succession exposed in eastern Antarctica outside the Transantarctic Mountains. The coal measures disconformably or unconformably overlie alluvial fan deposits of the Radok Conglomerate and are conformably overlain by the dominantly fluviatile Flagstone Bench Formation. The coal measures were deposited within alluvial settings dominated by north to northeasterly flowing, low-sinuosity rivers chiefly confined to broad, fault-bounded, valleys of the Lambert Graben, a major late Palaeozoic to early Mesozoic failed rift system. Both climatic and local tectonic factors are considered to have been the major influences on the pattern of coal measure sedimentation. Recent mapping has identified a much greater thickness of sediments within the coal measures than had been inferred previously. The Bainmedart Coal Measures are formally subdivided into six members. In ascending stratigraphic order these are: Dart Fields Conglomerate Member (<3 m thick), Toploje Member (c. 300 m thick), Dragons Teeth Member (15–25 m thick), Glossopteris Gully Member (c. 670 m thick), Grainger Member (c. 350 m thick) and McKinnon Member (c. 530 m thick).

Remigolepis walkeri sp. nov. from the Mandagery Sandstone (late Devonian) near Canowindra, New South Wales (NSW), is the second species of Remigolepis to be described from Australia, the first being from near Grenfell, NSW. Remigolepis walkeri possesses unusual paired suborbital plates with a large oval structure at the anteromesial edge of the plate, representing an attachment for the autopalatine portion of the palatoquadrate. Among asterolepidoids, this morphology is most similar to Pterichthyodes. Suborbitals of Remigolepis from East Greenland are said to possess a transverse ridge on the internal surface, similar to the bothriolepids Bothriolepis and Nawagiaspis. However, some specimens from East Greenland may show a morphology more similar to Remigolepis walkeri. The internal morphology of the suborbital plates is constant in the population of Remigolepis from the Canowindra locality, suggesting the presence of a single species despite the presence of more than 1000 individuals in this fauna. The morphology of the caudal fin of Remigolepis walkeri is similar to Remigolepis sp. from near Eden, NSW, and Asterolepis ornata, but differs from Remigolepis sp. from China. The morphology of the pectoral and caudal fins of R. walkeri indicate a bottom-dwelling lifestyle, whereas Bothriolepis from the same fauna may have been able to generate sufficient lift from the pectoral fins to enter the water column on a regular basis.

The Tokat Complex is a strongly deformed tectono-sedimentary mixture of low-grade metamorphic rocks with abundant recrystallized limestone and relatively rare serpentinite and radiolarian chert in blocks of variable size. Samples from the radiolarian chert blocks, found in highly crushed zones, each of which corresponds to a thrust sheet within an imbricate thrust zone, have yielded a Tithonian fossil assemblage. They are interpreted as tectonic inclusions emplaced within the Tokat Complex after its main post-early Permian–pre-Liassic metamorphism, and were derived from the rifting and opening of a Neotethyan ocean. The presence of Tithonian blocks within low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Tokat Complex shows that Tethys ocean was in existence in this region by latest Jurassic time. We also suggest that the presence of ophiolitic slices imbricated with the Pontide basement, Tokat Complex, explains the swarm of North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) splays in this region where the NAFZ likely followed a major pre-existing crustal weakness.

The catastrophic slope failures and landslides that occur in the final stages of lateral collapses of volcanoes destroy much of the evidence for precursory deformation and the early stages of the collapses concerned. Aborted or incomplete collapse structures, although rare, are rich sources of information on these stages of development of catastrophic collapses. The San Andres fault system, on the volcanic island of El Hierro, is a relatively young (between about 545 and about 261–176 ka old) but inactive lateral collapse structure. It appears to represent an aborted giant landslide. It is developed along the flank of a steep-sided volcanic rift zone, and is bounded by a discrete strike-slip fault zone at the up-rift end, closest to the centre of the island. This geometry differs markedly from that of collapse structures on stratovolcanoes but bears some similarities to that of active fault systems on Hawaii. Although the fault system has undergone little erosion, cataclasites which formed close to the palaeosurface are well exposed. These cataclasites are amongst the first fault rocks to be described from volcano lateral collapse structures and include the only pseudotachylytes to have been identified in such structures to date. Their development at unusually shallow depths is attributed to large movements on the fault in a single event, the inferred aborted landslide, and a lack of pressurized pore water. The absence of pressurized fluids in the slumping block may have caused the San Andres fault system to cease moving, rather than develop into a giant volcanic landslide. The recognition that the San Andres fault system is inactive greatly reduces the estimated volcanic hazard associated with El Hierro. However, the lack of evidence for precursory deformation prior to the aborted landslide event is disturbing as it implies that giant lateral collapses can occur on steep-sided oceanic islands with little warning.

During Cambrian and earliest Ordovician times, Avalonia was an area forming an integral part of the huge Gondwanan continent, probably along the northern margin of Amazonia, until in early Ordovician (late Arenig or Llanvirn) time it split off from Gondwana, leaving a widening Rheic Ocean to its south. Today, its southern margin with Gondwana extends northeast from east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, through Nova Scotia north of the Meguma terrane, and thence below sea level to the south of Newfoundland. On the eastern side of the present Atlantic, the southern margin may separate southwest Portugal from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula; it can be traced eastwards with more certainty from the south Cornwall nappes to a line separating the Northern Phyllite Belt (on the southern margin of the Rhenohercynian terrane) and the Mid-German Crystalline High. There is no certain evidence of Avalonian crust to the northeast of the Elbe Line. The northern margin of Avalonia extends westwards from south of Denmark to the British Isles, where it merges with the Iapetus Ocean suture between Scotland and England. Traced westwards, it crosses Ireland and reappears in northern Newfoundland to the east of New World Island, where it may follow the trace of the Dog Bay Line and the Cape Ray Fault. Recent work suggests that the northern margin of Avalonia may clip the northern tip of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, and then enter the North American mainland at the Bay of Chaleur; it may then be traced from north and west of the Popelogan and Bronson Hill arcs to Long Island Sound near Newhaven, Connecticut. The Cambrian to Devonian faunas reflect the history of Avalonia: initially they were purely Gondwanan but, as Ordovician time proceeded, more genera crossed firstly the Tornquist Ocean as it narrowed between Avalonia and Baltica to close in latest Ordovician and early Silurian times, and secondly the Iapetus Ocean, so that by the early Silurian most of the benthic shelly faunas, apart from the ostracods, were the same round the adjacent margins of all three palaeocontinents.

Mafic dykes (Groups A–D) intruded into Mesoproterozoic basement amphibolites, gneisses, and granitoids of the Cape Meredith Complex on the southern tip of West Falkland, provide an important record of at least three periods of lithospheric extension during Palaeozoic and Jurassic times. Group A dykes are calc-alkaline lamprophyres that were generated by partial melting of an enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle in Cambro-Ordovician times. Group B dykes are Ordovician dolerites derived from an asthenospheric mantle source, perhaps during the same extensional episode as Group A dykes. Group C dykes were also derived from an asthenospheric source and are possibly of Silurian age. The youngest, Group D, dykes are part of the widespread Jurassic Gondwana province. This group contains an oceanic island basalt-like sample and an enriched sample similar to both Group A lamprophyres and to the Jurassic Ferrar province in Antarctica. These correlations have interesting implications for the composition and evolution of mantle sources through time; the co-existence of Cambrian lamprophyres and Jurassic Ferrar-type magmas in the Cape Meredith Complex demonstrate for the first time that the enriched lithospheric mantle source postulated for the Ferrar magmas existed as far back as Cambrian times.

The Caledonian deformation of the Brabant Massif and the Rügen Early Palaeozoic has been compared by structural analysis including strain determinations, X-ray texture analysis, illite crystallinity and vitrinite reflectivity. Both areas have experienced weak internal deformation under anchimetamorphic to very low-grade metamorphic conditions. The deformation of the Brabant Massif is characterized by (a) a pronounced diagenetic foliation which resulted from compaction and weak extensional tectonics; (b) tilting or weak folding of the Cambrian strata around the Cambrian/Ordovician boundary without internal deformation; (c) a main phase of Caledonian deformation in the Lower Devonian which was associated with open folding and an axial-plane pressure solution cleavage; (d) bending of Caledonian structures from northwest–southeast to northeast–southwest. The internal deformation appears homogeneous with decreasing strain values towards upper structural levels. The strain ellipsoid is predominantly prolate with the main axis of extension parallel to the bedding–cleavage intersection lineation. It is interpreted as the result of superposition of compaction, tectonic shortening and volume loss through pressure solution. The Rügen Early Palaeozoic is less deformed and less metamorphosed under anchizonal conditions. While the upper structural level is almost undeformed, towards the deeper structural levels a spaced and then a continuous slaty cleavage is developed which is successively crenulated by a fracture cleavage. The internal deformation appears inhomogeneous due to several thrust zones with somewhat higher strain values. Outside the thrust zones strain values increase towards lower structural levels, but not significantly. The strain ellipsoid is prolate with a strongly varying orientation of the X-axis. The structural inventory of both areas is comparable with other fold-and-thrust belts. While the Rügen Palaeozoic represents an imbricated thrust-fan of an upper structural level with discrete thrusts and inhomogeneous strain, the Brabant Massif represents a deeper structural level dominated by folding and more homogeneous internal deformation.

The late Caledonian Galway Batholith is cut by two major faults which divide it into three separate areas: the western, central and eastern blocks. The upthrown and more deeply eroded central block is bounded by these faults, in the west by the north–northeast trending Shannawona Fault and in the east by the north–northwest trending Barna Fault. We present new granite field relations from part of the central block (Inveran sector) which are fundamental in establishing the order and style of emplacement for the granites of the central block and the batholith as a whole. Unequivocal field evidence from the Inveran sector indicates upward movement of early central block granites which then became the solid roof rocks to subsequent intrusions. In the case of the Knock Granite these earlier intrusions were block stoped. We use this field evidence to review the geology of the central block in a 200 km2 area that incorporates the previously mapped Costelloe and Spiddal areas. Sharp intrusive contacts are a predominant feature of this sector of the central block and are in marked contrast to the gradational contacts recorded elsewhere in the batholith. Whereas juxtaposition of plutons in the western block occurred as the granites were partly crystallized, the central block reveals earlier, deeper level granites that were consolidated by the time they were intruded by late-stage higher level granites.

A 5 m long permineralized trunk from the Upper Kellwasser member of southern Morocco represents the first record of a large trunk of an identifiable species of Callixylon, C. erianum, from Gondwana. This occurrence constitutes the most reliable evidence based on plant megafossils for a floral connection between Laurussia and Gondwana in late Devonian times and for a proximity of these continents in Famennian times. The potential of this trunk for studies of the architecture and growth patterns of the earliest trees with a gymnospermous type of arborescent habit is discussed.
