Pre-/early folding fracture patterns were recognized in several anticlines from three structural domains in the Simply Folded Belt of the Fars arc. These fracture sets were characterized in terms of opening mode and relative chronology and used to reconstruct the main compressional trends related to the early Zagros collisional history. The palaeostress reconstructions based on these fracture sets were further refined by combination with newly collected or already available fault-slip and calcite twin data. As an alternative to previous models of rigid block rotations or regional stress rotation, we propose that the complex pattern of pre-folding fractures and the contrasting palaeostress orientations through time in the different domains investigated are related to the presence of basement faults with N–S and WNW trends, above which basement and cover were variably coupled during stress build-up and early deformation of the Arabian margin. Beyond regional implications, this study draws attention to the need to carefully consider pre-existing fractures, possibly unrelated to folding, to build more realistic conceptual fold–fracture models.

Since writing the first report on the arthropods of the Rhynie Chert beds (see Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. (9), xii, pp. 455–74, 5 pls., and 13 text-figs.) some additional specimens of Palaeocharinus have been collected. A few examples are fairly complete and well preserved, showing a considerable amount of structural detail, such as the chaetotaxy, claws of the legs, ornamentation of the chitin, eyes, etc. An account of the lateral eyes is given below. We also include notes on a supposed insect and another fossil arthropod which we refer with doubt to the aquatic Merostoma. All the illustrations in this little paper have been drawn by Miss Violet Borrow, A.R.C.A., with the aid of a camera lucida under our personal supervision.

Lower Palaeozoic rocks in the Karadere-Zirze area, east of Safranbolu (Pontides, northern Turkey), range from Early Ordovician to Silurian. Overlying the probably Tremadoc Bakacak Formation are Aydos Formation quartzites, followed conformably by the Karadere Formation, dated as Early Arenig to Early Llanvirn by means of graptolites which are assigned to seventeen genera and include three new forms: Eoglyptograptus bouceki, Prolasiograptus haplus praecursor and Undulograptus? mui. Late Arenig trilobites from the Karadere Formation include Bergamia, Cyclopyge, Dionidella?, Leioshumardia and Seleneceme. In the Limestone Member of the overlying Ketencikdere Formation, uncommon trilobites suggest only a mid- to late Ordovician age, but conodonts with Colour Alteration Index 5–6 indicate the Amorphognathus tvaerensis Biozone (early Caradoc). Macrofossils are rare in the Siltstone Member, but conodonts from the middle of the unit suggest the highest subzone of the A. tvaerensis Biozone; the youngest visible strata are, on acritarch evidence, at least as high as Caradoc, but the Ashgill is not confirmed and the contact with overlying Silurian rocks is unexposed. The Findikli Formation comprises: a Lower Member, black argillites with Llandovery graptolites and acritarchs; and an Upper Member, grey shales with late Wenlock graptolites, overlain unconformably by Devonian rocks. The succession differs significantly from contemporaneous deposits in southern Turkey and its affinities lie with western Europe, including the Welsh Basin.

A laterally extensive, Neoproterozoic extensional detachment (the Betsileo shear zone) is recognized in central Madagascar separating the Itremo sheet (consisting of Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic sediments and underlying basement rocks) from the Antananarivo block (Archaean/Palaeoproterozoic crust re-metamorphosed in the Neoproterozoic). Non-coaxial deformation gradually increases to a maximum at a lithological contrast between the granitoids and gneisses of the footwall and the metasedimentary rocks of the hangingwall. Ultramylonites at this highest-strained zone show mineral-elongation lineations that plunge to the southwest.

σ-, δ- and C/S-type fabrics imply top-to-the-southwest extensional shear sense. Contrasting metamorphic grades are found either side of the shear zone. In the north, where this contrast is greatest, amphibolite-grade footwall rocks are juxtaposed with lower-greenschist-grade hangingwall rocks. The metamorphic grade in the hangingwall increases to the south, suggesting that a crustal section is preserved.

The Betsileo shear zone facilitated crustal-scale extensional collapse of the East African Orogeny, and thus represents a previously poorly recognized structural phase in the story of Gondwanan amalgamation. Granitic magmatism and granulite/amphibolite-grade metamorphism in the footwall are all associated with formation of the Betsileo shear zone, making recognition of this detachment important in any attempt to understand the tectonic evolution of central Gondwana.

The Alpine orogenic belt of the Hellenides has been strongly reworked by ductile and brittle extensional tectonics. Extensional structures have affected the central Aegean region and obliterated much of the original orogenic architecture since at least early Miocene times. In the area of Almyropotamos (on the island of Evia, flanking the western part of the Aegean) a unique remnant compressional nappe stack involving Tertiary metamorphic rocks has been preserved. This nappe sequence comprises a high-pressure rock unit on top of a lower grade unit. The upper unit (South Evia Blueschist Belt) is thought to be the westward continuation of the Cycladic blueschist belt metamorphosed at high-pressure conditions during Late Cretaceous–Eocene times. The underlying unit (the Almyropotamos Unit) is a continental margin sequence covered by a flysch and containing Lutetian nummulites, indicating that this unit accumulated sediments until at least late Eocene times.

In the present study we analyse the petrology of the Almyropotamos nappe stack and define the P–T conditions of each of the different rock units exposed there. The presence of glaucophane, lawsonite rimmed by epidote, and jadeite (70 mol.%) suggest that peak P–T conditions in the South Evia Blueschist Belt reached approximately 10–12 kbar and 350–450 °C. Unlike previous studies, which estimated that the underlying Almyropotamos Unit reached only greenschist-facies conditions, glaucophane relics and Si-rich phengites were found by us in this unit. These indicate that high-pressure metamorphism and crustal thickening in this part of the Aegean lasted until at least the late Eocene or early Oligocene. We note that in this respect the architecture of southern Evia resembles that of northern Greece (Olympos, Ossa). Our structural data indicate that rock units in the Almyropotamos area record different folding phases, with the South Evia Blueschist Belt having a more complex fold history than the underlying Almyropotamos Unit. The entire nappe stack shares large-scale folds which are E–W trending, and locally overturned-to-the-south, and which may represent (at present coordinates) N–S contraction and nappe transport.

Six individual tectonostratigraphic units are identified within the İzmir–Ankara–Erzincan Suture Zone in the critical Erzincan area of the Eastern Pontides. The Ayıkayası Formation of Campanian–Maastrichtian age is composed of bedded pelagic limestones intercalated with polymict, massive conglomerates. The Ayıkayası Formation conformably overlies the Tauride passive margin sequence in the Munzur Mountains to the south and is interpreted as an underfilled foredeep basin. The Refahiye Complex, of possible Late Cretaceous age, is a partial ophiolite composed of ~75% (by volume) serpentinized peridotite (mainly harzburgite), ~20% diabase and minor amounts of gabbro and plagiogranite. The complex is interpreted as oceanic lithosphere that formed by spreading above a subduction zone. Unusual screens of metamorphic rocks (e.g. marble and schist) locally occur between sheeted diabase dykes. The Upper Cretaceous Karayaprak Mélange exhibits two lithological associations: (1) the basalt + radiolarite + serpentinite association, including depleted arc-type basalts; (2) the massive neritic limestone + lava + volcaniclastic association that includes fractionated, intermediate-composition lavas, and is interpreted as accreted Neotethyan seamount(s). The several-kilometre-thick Karadağ Formation, of Campanian–Maastrichtian age, is composed of greenschist-facies volcanogenic rocks of mainly basaltic to andesitic composition, and is interpreted as an emplaced Upper Cretaceous volcanic arc. The Campanian–Early Eocene Sütpınar Formation (~1500 m thick) is a coarsening-upward succession of turbiditic calcarenite, sandstone, laminated mudrock, volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks that includes rare andesitic lava, and is interpreted as a regressive forearc basin. The Late Paleocene–Eocene Sipikör Formation is a laterally varied succession of shallow-marine carbonate and siliciclastic lithofacies that overlies deformed Upper Cretaceous units with an angular unconformity. Structural study indicates that the assembled accretionary prism, supra-subduction zone-type oceanic lithosphere and volcanic arc units were emplaced northwards onto the Eurasian margin and also southwards onto the Tauride (Gondwana-related) margin during Campanian–Maastrichtian time. Further, mainly southward thrusting took place during the Eocene in this area, related to final closure of Tethys. Our preferred tectonic model involves northward subduction, supra-subduction zone ophiolite genesis and arc magmatism near the northerly, Eurasian margin of the Mesozoic Tethys.

The 1973 eruption on Heimaey, Iceland, presented the opportunity to study the interaction of the principal factors that control the formation of pyroclastic fall deposits. The grain size characteristics and the dispersal of some of the scoria fall units within the Eldfell Scoria deposit are described and related to observations made on the wind speed and direction, the height of the eruption column, the ‘muzzle’ velocity and the various styles of activity during the first month of the eruption.

The overprinting of the high grade rocks of the Scourian episode, during the Inverian and Laxfordian episodes, has so far prevented a reliable estimate being made of the age of the Scourian granulite–facies metamorphism in the Central Region of the Lewisian of northwestern Scotland. In an attempt to solve this problem the U–Pb isotopic systems of zircons from two samples of hypersthene granulite from the Kylesku group have been examined. These zircons have discordant apparent ages complicating the interpretation of the results. However, by measuring a number of size fractions from each of the two zircon suites it has been possible to demonstrate that a major isotopic event or events took place approximately 2700 m.y. ago in these granulite–facies rocks. It has also been shown that the two discordance trends found for the two zircon populations can be explained in terms of episodic disturbances of the U–Pb isotopic systems at times which correspond to the known ages of ‘Laxfordian’ and ‘Caledonian’ events.

Structure varies along strike in the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt of Iran, which is a principal element in the Arabia–Eurasia continental collision. Pre-collision, Late Cretaceous ophiolite nappes (Kermanshah, Neyriz) and related nappes of deep marine sediments (Radiolarite Series) were emplaced next to two regions (Pusht-e Kuh arc, Fars) which later developed a consistent structural style across the range from the High Zagros Fault to the foreland limit of deformation. The intervening area has a zone of highly imbricated Arabian plate strata (the Bakhtyari Culmination) thrust southwest towards and over a low relief, low elevation region (the Dezful Embayment). There are no ophiolite nappes northeast of the Bakhtyari Culmination. Isopachs reflect these different structural patterns from Late Cretaceous time but not earlier. In Late Cretaceous time the Dezful Embayment recorded less deposition than adjacent areas to the northwest and southeast. In the Palaeogene there was little net difference between the Dezful Embayment and its margins. The Dezful Embayment has been a depocentre since roughly 35 Ma, which is the likely time of initial collision between Arabia and Eurasia. We propose that the syn-collision structure and stratigraphy of the Zagros is therefore strongly influenced by the variation in Late Cretaceous ophiolite emplacement, but the original cause of this variation is not clear.

The Kula province of Western Turkey provides an excellent example of an alkali basalt province in an area of active rifting. This paper establishes the relationship between the generation of the basalts and the extension of the region. The wide, shallow, terrestrial basin, formed by early extension, was subsequently cut through by narrow, fault-bounded grabens. The genesis of alkali basalt magmas began soon after the concentration of the extension into two grabens ˜2 Ma. The basalts, in the form of some 80 small cinder cones and associated lava flows and fields, have a total volume of 2.3 km3. This small volume reflects the small amount of extension in the region (β < 1.2 where β = final length of crust: initial length of crust).The intercalation of sediments and basalts in the Kula area enables the establishment of a relationship between the extensional activity and the generation of the basalts. This is demonstrable using radiometric and stratigraphic techniques, notably Ar-Ar dating of amphibole phenocrysts.

The Yangtze Platform preserves relatively thick carbonate successions and excellent fossil records across the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary interval. The intensely studied Meishucun section in East Yunnan was one of the Global Stratotype Section candidates for the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. However, depositional breaks were suspected in the section and the first appearance of small shelly fossils could not be verified. The Laolin section located in NE Yunnan is more continuous and shows great potential for global correlation of carbon isotope features across the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary. However, the stratigraphic framework and correlations were controversial. We studied and systematically sampled the Laolin section and present here new carbon isotope data for this section. The Laolin section consists of, in ascending order, the Baiyanshao dolostone of the Dengying Formation, the Daibu siliceous dolostone, Zhongyicun dolomitic phosphorite, lower Dahai dolostone and upper Dahai limestone of the Zhujiaqing Formation, and the black siltstone of the Shiyantou Formation. Our data reveal a large negative δ13C excursion (−7.2‰, L1′) in the Daibu Member, which matches the previously published data for the Laolin section, and a large positive excursion (+3.5‰, L4) in the Dahai Member, which was not shown in the published data. The excursion L1′ correlates well with the similarly large negative excursion near the first appearance of small shelly fossils in Siberia and Mongolia. Similar magnitude excursions are also known from Morocco and Oman, for which there are no robust fossil constraints but from where volcanic ash beds have been dated precisely at 542 Ma, thus confirming a global biogeochemical event near the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary. Our data also indicate that deposition was more continuous at the Laolin section compared with the Meishucun section, where there are no records of a comparable negative excursion near the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary, nor any comparable positive excursion in the Dahai Member. Therefore, the Laolin section has proven potential to be a supplementary Global Stratotype Section for the Ediacaran–Cambrian boundary on the Yangtze Platform.

We present chemical data on magmatically heterogeneous pyroclastic deposits of late Quaternary age erupted from zoned magma systems underlying Tenerife (Canary Islands), Sao Miguel and Faial (Azores), and Vesuvius. The most fractionated magmas present at each centre are respectively Na-rich phonolite, trachyte, and K-rich phonolite. Within any one deposit, chemical variation is either accompanied by changes in the phenocryst assemblage (petrographic zonation) or is largely manifested in trace element abundances, unaccompanied by any petrographic change (occult zonation). Zoning is analogous to that in calc-alkaline systems where the most fractionated products are high-silica rhyolites. When a range of magma types are considered, a correlation emerges between roofward depletion of trace elements (especially REE) in the zoned system and compatability of those same trace elements in the accessory phenocryst phases present. Thus, allanite- or chevkinite-bearing rhyolitic systems are light-REE depleted roofwards, the sphene-bearing Tenerife system is middle-REE depleted roofwards, the melanite-bearing Vesuvius system is heavy-REE depleted roofwards, while the Azores systems, which lack these phases, display roofward REE enrichment. Therefore, the behaviour of trace elements may in each case be explained by fractionation of observed phenocryst assemblages. The resemblance between features of zoned magma systems and published work on the dynamic consequences of cooling saturated aqueous solutions prompts us to suggest that sidewall crystallization and consequent boundary-layer uprise to form a capping layer at top of the system may be a plausible mechanism for the generation of both petrographic and occult zonation. Reverse zoning occurs among the first-erupted tephra of some deposits, demonstrating that the most highly differentiated magma available is not always the first to be tapped during an eruption from a zoned system.

A new lithostratigraphy is presented for the Skiddaw Group (lower Ordovician) of the English Lake District. Two stratigraphical belts are described. Five formations are defined in the Northern Fells Belt, ranging in age from Tremadoc to early Llanvirn. They are all mudstone or sandstone dominated, of turbidite origin; in ascending order they are named the Bitter Beck, Watch Hill, Hope Beck, Loweswater and Kirk Stile formations. Two formations are defined in the Central Fells Belt, ranging in age from late Arenig to Llanvirn. These are the Buttermere Formation – a major olistostrome deposit – overlain by the Tarn Moor Formation, consisting of turbidite mudstones with volcaniclastic turbidite sandstone beds. A revised graptolite and new acritarch biostratigraphy for the Skiddaw Group is presented with eight graptolite biozones and thirteen acritarch assemblages and sub-assemblages. The provenance of the group is assessed from detailed petrographical and geochemical work. This suggests derivation, in the early Ordovician, largely from an old inactive continental arc terrane lying to the southeast, with the appearance of juvenile volcanic material in the Llanvirn. Comparisons and correlations of the Skiddaw Group are made with the Isle of Man and eastern Ireland.

Neoproterozoic-early Cambrian successions in Iberia are reexamined. A gradual transition across the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian boundary is present in Central Iberia, whereas in the Cantabrian region and the Iberian Chains Lower Cambrian arenaceous successions rest with profound angular unconformity on Neoproterozoic turbidites. In Central Iberia, the Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession is referred to the informal Domo Extremeño group, representing mostly basinal facies, and the overlying Rio Huso group consisting of slope deposits and proximal turbidites that grade into shallower marine deposits. The latter is inferred to represent distal slope to outer platform depositional conditions and contains widespread carbonate olistostromic units. The position of the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary is within the Pusa shale of the Rio Huso group and can be correlated at the regional level by the occurrence of trace fossils, acritarchs, and in particular the abundant shelly metazoan Cloudina. The succession also yielded megascopic carbonaceous fossils, such as vendotaenids and Beltanelioides? sp. ind., and Sabellidites. Contrary to former interpretations assuming transport of older platform carbonates from the Ibor region into ‘younger’ olistostromic beds of the Rio Huso group, we interpret sedimentary and fossil evidence to suggest that shallower platform deposits of the informal Ibor group were penecontemporaneously incorporated in the olistostromic lower part of the Rio Huso group. Hence, the olistostromes are not believed to mark a major erosive unconformity. Based on the ichnofossil record and recent U-Pb age determinations, we argue that a proposed disconformity between Lower and Upper ‘Alcudian’ strata is neither regional nor does it mark a significant hiatus. Neoproterozoic-early Cambrian deposition in Central Iberia can be accommodated in a model that implies a generalized stretching of the crust during an extensional event which closely followed the Cadomian phase of the Pan-African Orogeny and which eventually could have included transcurrent components. An extensional phase with transcurrent components during the deposition of the Ibor and lower Rio Huso groups is regarded as a probable cause of widespread ponding resulting in the juxtaposition of platform and basinal successions, eventually leading to anoxic conditions in Pusa shale deposition times. A possible cause for repeated collapse events developing olistostromes and intra-sequential folding could be sought in this tectonic context.

The Jurassic and Cretaceous sequence of Spitsbergen, Svalbard archipelago, is described and a revised lithostratigraphical scheme, of four formations, is proposed. The main episode of tectonic activity, together with dolerite intrusion, was in late Jurassic-early Cretaceous times and is represented by a non-sequence and local unconformity between the two lower formations. The faunal succession is also discussed.

An assemblage of problematical microfossils of Precambrian–Cambrian boundary age is redescribed from the Chert–Phosphorite Member, at the base of the Lower Tal Formation of Maldeota in the Lesser Himalaya of India. This assemblage has previously been ascribed to various ages, from Precambrian to Cretaceous, but is held by us to contain: Maldeotaia bandalica, Protohertzina anabarica group, trumpet-shaped elements, acicular elements A & B, ?Conotheca sp., Ovalitheca cf. multicostata, allathecid sp. A, Barbitositheca ansata, Hexangulaconularia cf. formosa, Coleoloides aff. typicalis, Hyolithellus aff. insolitus, H. cf. isiticus, H. vladimirovae, Spirellus shankari and Olivooides multisulcatus. These compare closely with assemblages found above the base of the first, Anabarites trisulcatus–Protohertzina anabarica Zone in China and in the second, Pseudorthotheca costata Zone of southern Kazakhstan. The stratigraphic setting of the Krol–Tal succession is reviewed and several similarities are noted between the Precambrian–Cambrian boundary successions of Lesser Himalaya in India and of Yunnan and Sichuan in Southwest China, indicating that correlation between them is possible at several levels.

Lower Triassic marine strata in Spitsbergen accumulated on a mid-to-high latitude ramp in which high-energy foreshore and shoreface facies passed offshore into sheet sandstones of probable hyperpycnite origin. More distal facies include siltstones, shales and dolomitic limestones. Carbon isotope chemostratigraphy comparison allows improved age dating of the Boreal sections and shows a significant hiatus in the upper Spathian. Two major deepening events, in earliest Griesbachian and late Smithian time, are separated by shallowing-upwards trends that culminated in the Dienerian and Spathian substages. The redox record, revealed by changes in bioturbation, palaeoecology, pyrite framboid content and trace metal concentrations, shows anoxic phases alternating with intervals of better ventilation. Only Dienerian–early Smithian time witnessed persistent oxygenation that was sufficient to support a diverse benthic community. The most intensely anoxic, usually euxinic, conditions are best developed in offshore settings, but at times euxinia also developed in upper offshore settings where it is even recorded in hyperpycnite and storm-origin sandstone beds: an extraordinary facet of Spitsbergen's record. The euxinic phases do not track relative water depth changes. For example, the continuous shallowing upwards from the Griesbachian to lower Dienerian was witness to several euxinic phases separated by intervals of more oxic, bioturbated sediments. It is likely that the euxinia was controlled by climatic oscillations rather than intra-basinal factors. It remains to be seen if all the anoxic phases found in Spitsbergen are seen elsewhere, although the wide spread of anoxic facies in the Smithian/Spathian boundary interval is clearly a global event.

Selected trace fossils from the type section of the ‘Etcheminian Series’ at Hanford Brook are described and illustrated: Helmithoidichnites tenuis Fitch, Monocraterion sp., Palaeophycus tubularis Hall, Planolites sp., Psammichnites gigas Matthew, Subphyllochordra? sp., Taphrhelminthoida dailyi n. sp., and Taphrhelminthopsis cf. T. circularis Crimes et al. The assemblage has elements comparable to those in other Lower Cambrian sequences. It formed in shallow water settings, is mainly endichnial, and contains systematic, guided meander traces that are generally characteristic of deep-water environments in younger sequences; this may be related to global environmental changes early in the Palaeozoic. The guided meander traces are characterized morphometrically, using an image analyser: the meander systems exhibit a strongly bimodal distribution of morphologic elements, reflecting a well developed taxis (sense for position, direction, and distance) during trace production. The method of morphometric analysis has potential for characterizing trace fossils generally, somewhat like X-ray diffractograms characterize minerals.

This paper expands the K–Ar dating and palynologically controlled stratigraphical data base reported in earlier papers to the north trending Selendi and Uşak-Güre basins located to the north of east–west trending Alaşehir graben in western Turkey. These north trending basins began to form during Early Miocene times and most of their basin fills accumulated before 14 Ma, except for the youngest Asartepe formation. Recent studies of both east–west grabens and north trending basins show that they started to develop simultaneously during Early Miocene times under the north–south extensional regime, and the classification of the structures as ‘replacement’ and ‘revolutionary’ has no meaning for the Alaşehir graben and the basins located to its north.

Fifty-three samples from the Oxford, Kimmeridge and Speeton Clays of the Yorkshire area have been analysed petrographically and geochemically, by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, atomic absorption and combustion (TOC). Major elements and the following trace elements have been determined: Rb, Sr, Ba, Cr, V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mo. P2O5, Rb, Ba, Cr and V show positive correlation to the clastic fraction (quartz, feldspar and clay minerals). CaO, MnO, and Sr and to a lesser extent Ni, Cu and Zn seem to be positively correlated to calcite, while Fe2O5, MnO, MgO and Co are linked to siderite. Stratigraphical variations of element/element ratios have been used to obtain sedimentological information from the petrographical and geochemical data.

The Oxford Clay, with its coarse and immature clays, was deposited in a regressive development. An upwards shallowing with ventilated deposition of more mature and altered clastic material took place throughout the unit. During deposition of the Kimmeridge Clay more reducing conditions existed and finer grained, smectite-rich sediments were formed. The fine grained Speeton Clay was deposited during changing depositional conditions, varying ventilation in a generally regressive development. Several sedimentological breaks characterize the unit.
