The rifting of the Red Sea, the folding of the Zagros-Taurus range (in Turkey and Iran), and the development of the structures in and near Israel appear to have resulted from a northward anti-clockwise rotational movement of Arabia, which occurred in several phases during Upper Cretaceous to Pleistocene times. The sinistral strike slip fault of the Dead Sea Fault system participated in this movement. It is hereby suggested that the fold and fault structures in Israel and adjacent areas are drag effects along this strike slip fault.

This note provides photographs of thin sections and cellulose peels prepared from the syntypes figured by Goldfuss (1826) of Cyathophyllum flexuosum Goldfuss, the type species by original designation of Campophyllum Edwards and Haime, 1850.

It is concluded that C. flexuosum is not a disphyllid, and that Campophyllum may be maintained as a genus distinct from Caninia, Caninophyllum, and Palaeosmilia. For the present it is placed alone in the family Campophyllidae Wedekind, 1932.

The positioning of the Siluro-Devonian boundary is reviewed in the light of recent studies in both shelly and graptolitic facies in Europe and elsewhere. A case can be made for retaining the present position at the base of the Ludlow Bone Bed; but international opinion may demand a new standard section in the graptolitic facies, for example in Central Europe. In this event, it is suggested that a position at the base of the Monograptus uniformis Zone might prove the most widely satisfactory solution.

Banding, recorded by previous workers in hornblende picrite and dolerite intrusions near Rhiw, is found to be rhythmic layering. At least three major units (200 to 250 feet in thickness) have been recognized, and intermediate and minor scale units also occur, predominantly within the basal major unit. The majority of the rocks display cumulate textures, and crystallization appears to have been completed by heteradcumulus or adcumulus growth. Thin coarser-grained sheets, rich in plagioclase, and slightly discordant to the layering, are considered to be contemporaneous segregation veins.

Petrographic and chemical data are presented and a possible means of derivation from an ultrabasic rock is discussed.

Intersections may exist between a zone of chemical discontinuity (basalt—feldspathic periodtite or eclogite—garnet peridotite) and a phase transition zone (basalt—eclogite or feldspathic peridotite to garnet peridotite) at about the depth of the continental M-discon-tinuity. Variations in depth to the chemical discontinuity and in the positions of isogeotherms produce flexibility in erogenic models. Intersections between the two zones at depth could be reflected at the surface by major fault zones separating large structural blocks of different elevations. The effects of such intersections on the conventional hypothesis for the development of tectogenes, geosynclines, and mountains are considered. The intersections could provide a beginning and an end to the more vigorous changes in surface level occurring during an orogenic cycle.

A chevron-folded phyllite composed of well contrasted quartzose and micaceous layers was examined. The false cleavage in the mica layers is of fan type and measurements show a correlation between the angle of the fan and the thickness of the layer in which it forms. Such a correlation is to be expected if the folds formed by buckling under lateral compression.

The petrography of the Coniston Grits is described. Volcanic and sedimentary rock fragments suggest that the sediments were derived from the Ballantrae Series of the Southern Uplands, and not the Borrowdale Volcanic Series.

There is little palaeocurrent evidence for a border land mass, but it is suggested that coarse sedimentation during the Wenlockian was restricted to the Southern Uplands by a shallowing in the border area, which was finally overcome by Ludlovian times, to allow deposition of coarser material to the south.

A new clay pit at Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, gives continuous exposures of 21 feet of clays and limestone nodules of the davoei Zone at the top of the Lower Lias, 18 feet of similar beds and 8 feet of Marlstone Rock Bed belonging to the Middle Lias, and 38 feet of shales and limestones of the tenuicostatum and falciferum Zones of the Upper Lias. Liparoceratid, Amaltheid, Dactylioceratid and Hildoceratid ammonites occur and allow the zones to be delimited with some accuracy.

A formation composed of unbedded scaly bentonitic clay containing abundant scattered exotic blocks, boulders, pebbles, and smaller fragments is described from eastern Timor. It is proposed to call this formation the Bobonaro Scaly Clay. This formation is compared closely with the Argille scagliosa of the northern Apennines. Its origin is ascribed to submarine sliding of an unstable clay mass from the area north of Timor under the influence of gravity, closely associated with the emplacement of large overthrust slices of strata that marked a climax of the mid-Tertiary orogeny in Timor. The discovery of this formation has helped to bring about a radical revision of the published views of the stratigraphy and structure of Timor.
