Geological Magazine
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We have become aware that there are websites such as University Press Journals, Association of British University Presses and International Agency for Development of Culture, Education and Science (IADCES) which are claiming to offer publication in certain Cambridge University Press journals for a fee. We do not work with such companies. Submissions to Cambridge University Press journals can only be made via the online peer review systems linked to from this Cambridge Core website, or else directly to the editorial offices of those journals that do not operate online peer review systems. To submit a manuscript, go to the section below called 'Online submission' and follow the instructions. For more information on predatory publishing, please visit the Think Check Submit website.
Online submission
All manuscripts must be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.c.... For detailed instructions about how to submit your manuscript online, go to the online submission website, click on the Instructions and Forms link in the top right of the login screen, and then click on Online Submission Instructions for Authors. Please contact the editorial office if you have any queries about submitting your manuscript: www.cambridge.org/core/journals/geological-magazine
After submitting your manuscript, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of the manuscript and providing the manuscript reference number. You should quote the reference number of your manuscript in all correspondence relating to your manuscript.
Please ensure that your manuscript is uploaded in the correct file formats and using the correct journal styles. You are advised to check your manuscript against the journal’s Manuscript Checklist before uploading to prevent delay in your manuscript entering the peer-review process. To find this document, follow the Instructions and Forms link in the top right of the online submission screen, and then click on Manuscript Checklist.
You should particularly note the following instructions:
- The uploaded manuscript must be saved as DOC (not DOCX) or RTF files.
- All figures must be uploaded in TIFF or EPS formats as separate files, and saved at final size and at appropriate resolution. Colour figures must be saved as CMYK (not RGB, except for Supplementary files).
- Tables must be inserted at the end of the main document, not supplied as separate files.
- All files should be named in a logical way (e.g. [firstauthorsurname]Fig1.tif).
- A cover letter must be supplied at initial submission. This can be uploaded as a separate file.
The cover letter must contain:
- The corresponding author’s complete contact details (including email address)
- The category in which your manuscript is being submitted
- The number of figures that will be printed in colour in the printed issue and the name and address of the person to send the invoice (note that colour reproduction online is free of charge)
- Details of any third-party copyrighted material
- Details of any conflicts of interest
- Details of any online Supplementary Material.
- When submitting your revised manuscript, you will be required to upload a new set of files, not just those files that you have revised. Please ensure that all file formats match those specified above.
You will be given the opportunity during submission to suggest preferred and non-preferred referees, although your suggested referees will not necessarily be used.
ORCID
We require all corresponding authors to identify themselves using ORCID when submitting a manuscript to this journal. ORCID provides a unique identifier for researchers and, through integration with key research workflows such as manuscript submission and grant applications, provides the following benefits:
- Discoverability: ORCID increases the discoverability of your publications, by enabling smarter publisher systems and by helping readers to reliably find work that you have authored.
- Convenience: As more organisations use ORCID, providing your iD or using it to register for services will automatically link activities to your ORCID record, and will enable you to share this information with other systems and platforms you use, saving you re-keying information multiple times.
- Keeping track: Your ORCID record is a neat place to store and (if you choose) share validated information about your research activities and affiliations.
See our ORCID FAQs for more information.
If you don’t already have an iD, you will need to create one if you decide to submit a manuscript to this journal. You can register for one directly from your user account on ScholarOne, or alternatively via https://ORCID.org/register.
If you already have an iD, please use this when submitting your manuscript, either by linking it to your ScholarOne account, or by supplying it during submission using the "Associate your existing ORCID iD" button.
ORCIDs can also be used if authors wish to communicate to readers up-to-date information about how they wish to be addressed or referred to (for example, they wish to include pronouns, additional titles, honorifics, name variations, etc.) alongside their published articles. We encourage authors to make use of the ORCID profile’s “Published Name” field for this purpose. This is entirely optional for authors who wish to communicate such information in connection with their article. Please note that this method is not currently recommended for author name changes: see Cambridge’s author name change policy if you want to change your name on an already published article. See our ORCID FAQs for more information.
Licence to publish
Before Cambridge can publish your manuscript, we need a signed licence to publish agreement. Under the agreement, certain rights are granted to the journal owner which allow publication of the article. The original ownership of the copyright in the article remains unchanged. For full details see the publishing agreement page.
