Resumen

El virus de la enfermedad de Borna (VEB), un virus neurotrópico no citolítico con RNA “antisense” encapsulado no segmentado con una amplia distribución geográfica, infecta a varias especies de animales vertebrados y causa una enfermedad del sistema nervioso central (SNC) con mediación inmune y diversas manifestaciones, dependiendo tanto del huésped como de factores víricos. En las infecciones animales, el VEB puede persistir en el SNC e inducir alteraciones en las funciones de las células cerebrales, anomalías neuroevolutivas y perturbaciones del comportamiento. Algunos estudios serológicos y moleculares han propuesto una asociación entre el VEB y los trastornos psiquiátricos (esencialmente, la esquizofrenia y los trastornos afectivos), pero se requieren más investigaciones para establecer la posible contribución de este virus a la patogenésis de estos trastornos.
