An existence and uniqueness theorem for travelling waves in a bubbly liquid with a continuous bubble-size distribution is proved.

We prove that in the Stefan problem with planar, cylindrical or spherical symmetry, with vanishing heat capacity and constant boundary temperature, no mushy region can appear, even in the presence of constant volumetric heat sources, if the initial data are consistent with the presence of just two pure phases. If the boundary temperature is not constant, a mushy region may or may not appear; we find some general conditions ensuring one case or the other and we give a specific example illustrating the appearance of a mushy region.

Many reaction networks arising in applications are multistationary, that is, they have the capacity for more than one steady state, while some networks exhibit absolute concentration robustness (ACR), which means that some species concentration is the same at all steady states. Both multistationarity and ACR are significant in biological settings, but only recently has attention focused on the possibility for these properties to coexist. Our main result states that such coexistence in at-most-bimolecular networks (which encompass most networks arising in biology) requires at least three species, five complexes and three reactions. We prove additional bounds on the number of reactions for general networks based on the number of linear conservation laws. Finally, we prove that, outside of a few exceptional cases, ACR is equivalent to non-multistationarity for bimolecular networks that are small (more precisely, one-dimensional or up to two species). Our proofs involve analyses of systems of sparse polynomials, and we also use classical results from chemical reaction network theory.

We study a system of nonlocal aggregation cross-diffusion PDEs that describe the evolution of opinion densities on a network. The PDEs are coupled with a system of ODEs that describe the time evolution of the agents on the network. Firstly, we apply the Deterministic Particle Approximation (DPA) method to the aforementioned system in order to prove the existence of solutions under suitable assumptions on the interactions between agents. Later on, we present an explicit model for opinion formation on an evolving network. The opinions evolve based on both the distance between the agents on the network and the ’attitude areas’, which depend on the distance between the agents’ opinions. The position of the agents on the network evolves based on the distance between the agents’ opinions. The goal is to study radicalisation, polarisation and fragmentation of the population while changing its open-mindedness and the radius of interaction.

The purpose of this paper is to derive anisotropic mean curvature flow as the limit of the anisotropic Allen–Cahn equation. We rely on distributional solution concepts for both the diffuse and sharp interface models and prove convergence using relative entropy methods, which have recently proven to be a powerful tool in interface evolution problems. With the same relative entropy, we prove a weak–strong uniqueness result, which relies on the construction of gradient flow calibrations for our anisotropic energy functionals.

In this paper we investigate the uniqueness of solutions of the Ginzburg–Landau system for superconductivity in the regime where the thickness 2a of the film is small. We analyse the equations of first variation with respect to two shooting parameters and obtain estimates on all relevant quantities at the end of the film where the boundary conditions are prescribed. Using these estimates, we prove that the bifurcation curve of symmetric solutions is given by a decreasing function of the order parameter β when the film is thin enough. In addition, we prove that there is no curve of asymmetric solutions branching from the symmetric curve.

The structure of periodic solutions to the Ginzburg–Landau equations in R2 is studied in the critical case, when the equations may be reduced to the first-order Bogomolnyi equations. We prove the existence of periodic solutions when the area of the fundamental cell is greater than 4πM, M being the overall order of the vortices within the fundamental cell (the topological invariant). For smaller fundamental cell areas, it is shown that no periodic solution exists. It is then proved that as the boundaries of the fundamental cell go to infinity, the periodic solutions tend to Taubes' arbitrary N-vortex solution.

We obtain closed-form expressions involving eigenvalues, the condition number and/or the angle between the projections in the following different situations: when X = X with X = (Xt)t ≥ 0 being a Markov process, X is the subordination of X in the sense of Bochner, and X is a non-Markovian process which is obtained by time-changing X with an inverse of a subordinator. It turns out that these spectral projections correlation functions have different expressions with respect to these classes of processes which enables to identify substantial and deep properties about their dynamics. This interesting fact can be used to design original statistical tests to make inferences, for example, about the path properties of the process (presence of jumps), distance from symmetry (self-adjoint or non-self-adjoint) and short-to-long-range dependence. To reveal the usefulness of our results, we apply them to a class of non-self-adjoint Markov semigroups studied in Patie and Savov (to appear, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc., 179p), and then time-change by subordinators and their inverses.

Layered nanocrystals consist of a core of one material surrounded by a shell of a second material. We present computation of the atomistic strain energy density in a layered nanocrystal, using an idealised model with a simple cubic lattice and harmonic interatomic potentials. These computations show that there is a critical size r*s for the shell thickness rs at which the energy density has a maximum. This critical size is roughly independent of the geometry and material parameters of the system. Interestingly, this critical size agrees with the shell thickness at which the quantum yield has a maximum, as observed in several systems and thus leads one to support the hypothesis that maximal quantum yield is strongly correlated with maximal elastic energy density.

In this paper, we propose a new algebraic method to construct non-autonomous discrete integrable systems. The method starts from constructing generalizations of convergence acceleration algorithms related to discrete integrable systems. Then the non-autonomous version of the corresponding integrable systems are derived. The molecule solutions of the systems are also obtained. As an example of the application of the method, we propose a generalization of the multistep ϵ-algorithm, and then derive a non-autonomous discrete extended Lotka–Volterra equation. Since the convergence acceleration algorithm from the lattice Boussinesq equation is just a particular case of the multistep ϵ-algorithm, we have therefore arrived at a generalization of this algorithm. Finally, numerical experiments on the new algorithm are presented.

We consider linear and nonlinear inverse source problems of sound radiation in an unbounded domain which models an oceanic waveguide. The method for analysing their solvability is based on analytical properties of generalized acoustic potentials and the theory of extremal problems.

The aim of this paper is to provide and numerically test in the presence of measurement noise a procedure for target classification in wave imaging based on comparing frequency-dependent distribution descriptors with precomputed ones in a dictionary of learned distributions. Distribution descriptors for inhomogeneous objects are obtained from the scattering coefficients. First, we extract the scattering coefficients of the (inhomogeneous) target from the perturbation of the reflected waves. Then, for a collection of inhomogeneous targets, we build a frequency-dependent dictionary of distribution descriptors and use a matching algorithm in order to identify a target from the dictionary up to some translation, rotation and scaling.

We prove the existence of a one-parameter family of solutions of the porous medium equation in which the interface is a half line whose end point advances at a constant speed. Then we prove the stability of the solutions under a suitable class of perturbations. We discuss the relevance of these solutions to gravity-driven flows of thin films, and show that some solutions develop a very thin triangular plateau in the direction of propagation and that the angle of the plateau and its thickness are decreasing functions of the speed.

The self-interaction force of dislocation curves in metals depends on the local arrangement of the atoms and on the non-local interaction between dislocation curve segments. While these non-local segment–segment interactions can be accurately described by linear elasticity when the segments are further apart than the atomic scale of size $\varepsilon$ , this model breaks down and blows up when the segments are $O(\varepsilon)$ apart. To separate the non-local interactions from the local contribution, various models depending on $\varepsilon$ have been constructed to account for the non-local term. However, there are no quantitative comparisons available between these models. This paper makes such comparisons possible by expanding the self-interaction force in these models in $\varepsilon$ beyond the O(1)-term. Our derivation of these expansions relies on asymptotic analysis. The practical use of these expansions is demonstrated by developing numerical schemes for them, and by – for the first time – bounding the corresponding discretisation error.

In this paper, we consider the straining flow of a weakly interacting polymer–surfactant solution below a free surface, with the bulk surfactant concentration above the critical micelle concentration. We formulate a set of coupled differential equations describing the concentration of monomers, micelles, polymer, and polymer–micelle aggregates in the flow. We analyse the model in several asymptotic limits, and make predictions about the distribution of each of the species. In particular, in the large-reaction-rate limit we find that the model predicts a region near the free surface where no micelles or aggregates are present, and beneath this a region where the concentration of surfactant is constant, across which the concentration of aggregates increases until all the free polymer is consumed. For certain parameter regimes, a maximum in the concentration of the polymer–micelle complex occurs within the bulk fluid. In the finite-reaction-rate limit, micelles, and aggregates are present right up to the free surface, and the plateau in the concentration of surfactant in the bulk is no longer present. Results from the asymptotic theory compare favorably with full numerical solutions.

An integro-differential model for evolutionary dynamics with mutations is investigated by improving the understanding of its behaviour using numerical simulations. The proposed numerical approach can handle also density dependent fitness, and gives new insights about the role of mutation in the preservation of cooperation.

Switched server systems are mathematical models of manufacturing, traffic and queueing systems that have being studied since the early 1990s. In particular, it is known that typically the dynamics of such systems is asymptotically periodic: each orbit of the system converges to one of its finitely many limit cycles. In this article, we provide an explicit example of a switched server system with exotic behaviour: each orbit of the system converges to the same Cantor attractor. To accomplish this goal, we bring together recent advances in the understanding of the topological dynamics of piecewise contractions and interval exchange transformations (IETs) with flips. The ultimate result is a switched server system whose Poincaré map is semiconjugate to a minimal and uniquely ergodic IET with flips.

We prove the existence of a solution to a free boundary value problem arising in elastohydrodynamic lubrication. Previously, the existence was proved only under severe restrictions on the range of the physical parameters. We remove those restrictions here.

We discuss the emergence of common mathematical patterns governing the timing and severity of insurgent and terrorist attacks, across geographic scales and including cyberspace. We present mathematical models that provide a generative explanation of these patterns. Despite wide variations in the underlying settings and circumstances, the ubiquity of these patterns suggests there is a common way in which groups of humans fight each other. Our empirical findings follow from the analysis of myriad state-of-the-art datasets with resolution at the level of individual attacks, while our mathematical modelling involves numerical and analytical solutions of fission–fusion dynamics together with progress curve analysis.
