Theoretical Introduction to Galactic Magnetic Fields
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 January 2007
Abstract
Our Galaxy is pervaded by strong magnetic fields, which, together with the ordinary matter (made of gas and dust) and the cosmic rays, form the three basic constituents of the interstellar medium. After briefly reviewing our current observational knowledge about Galactic magnetic fields, I will address, from a theoretical point of view, the fundamental questions of their origin and their impact on the interstellar medium.
