We prove the following two results for mean-bounded positive operators on Lp(µ) (1<p>∞).

(1) If (X, , µ, ϕ) is a dynamical system and f ∈ L∞ (X) then the sequence f(ϕn x) is a.e. a universal good sequence for mean-bounded positive operators in Lp. (Return times property.)

(2) If T is a mean-bounded positive operator on LP(X, , µ) and f ∈ Lp (µ) then the sequence Tnf)(x) is a.e. a universal good sequence for all dynamical systems (Y, , v,S) in L∞(v). A corollary of (2) is a Wiener-Wintner property for mean-bounded positive operators on Lp.

For a homeomorphism of the plane, the basin of attraction of a fixed point attractor is open, connected, and simply-connected, and hence is homeomorphic to an open disk. The basin boundary, however, need not be homeomorphic to a circle. When it is not, it can contain periodic orbits of infinitely many different periods.

We define a criterion called Følner Independence for a stationary process over an amenable group. Intuitively, a process satisfies the criterion if, for sufficiently invariant Følner sets, the process in the Følner set is nearly independent of the process outside. We show that Følner Independence implies Finitely Determined. As an application, we show that, in its extreme Gibbs states, the amenable attractive Ising model is Følner Independent (hence Finitely Determined, hence Bernoulli).

Let (X,ℱ,μ,ϕ) be a dynamical system ϕ is an invertible measure-preserving transformation on the measure space (X,ℱ,μ). We show that for each p, 1<p<∞,f ∈ Lp(μ) we can find a single null set off which exists for all ε ℝ.

In the study of bifurcations of the family of degree-two complex polynomials, attention has been given mainly to parameter values within the Mandelbrot set M (e.g., connectedness of the Julia set and period doubling). The reason for this is that outside M, the Julia set is at all times a hyperbolic Cantor set. In this paper weconsider precisely this, values of the parameter in the complement of M. We find bifurcations occurring not on the Julia set itself but on the dynamic rays landing on itfrom infinity. As the parameter crosses the external rays of M, in the dynamic plane the points of the Julia set gain and lose dynamic rays. We describe these bifurcations with the aid of a family of circle maps and we study in detail the case of the fixed points.

The main result is a dominated ergodic theorem for a linear positive operator T on Lp(1 > p > ∞); the theorem holds if, and only if, T is Cesaro-bounded.

We study the quadratic family and show that for a positive measure set of parameters the map has an absolutely continuous invariant measure that is stable under small random perturbations.

Let ([0, 1]z, ℬ([0, 1]Z), μz, ϕ) be the dynamical system where ϕ is the shift on the product of the unit interval with Lebesgue measure. We show that this dynamical system has the following properties: (1) there exists ƒ ∈ L1(μz) (in fact in L(Log Log L)β) where 0 <β< 1 for which the following Wiener-Wintner property does not hold: (W-W). There exists a single null set N ⊂ X off which for all x ∈ X/N the sequence converges for all ε ⊂ [0,1).

(2) The property (W-W) holds in all Lp(μz), 1< p≤∞. Added to a continuity property of the helical transform, (W-W) is equivalent to the Carleson-Hunt result on the pointwise convergence of Fourier series.

We construct an area preserving homeomorphism ƒ: T2→T2 that is isotopic to the identity and fixed point free, but has the property that every essential simple closed curve C satisfies ƒ(C)∩C ≠ Ø. This answers a question of Guillou.

Let f: D → D be an inner function with a fixed point p ∈ D, and f*: S1 → S1 be its extension to the unit circle. We prove in this paper that the Rohlin invertible extension of the system (f*, λp) is equivalent to a generalized Bernoulli shift, where λp is the harmonic measure associated with p.

Let {RA} be an analytic family of rational maps and denote by j(λ) the Julia set of Rλ. We prove that the upper semicontinuous regularization j(λ) of j(λ) (which coincides with j(λ) for all λ in a dense open set) is a meromorphic multifunction, and give applications that illustrate the instability of Julia sets. In a similar vein, we also consider forward orbits of critical points and limit sets of Kleinian groups.

A sufficient condition for unique ergodicity of symbolic flows is provided. In an important but special case of interval exchange transformations, the condition has already been validated by W. Veech.

We describe the asymptotic dynamics of homeomorphisms obtained as restrictions of generic C2 endomorphisms of an interval with finitely many critical points, all of which are non-flat, and with all periodic points hyperbolic. The ω -limit set of such a restricted endomorphism cannot be infinite, except when the restriction of the endomorphism to the closure of the orbit of some critical point is a minimal homeomorphism of an infinite set.

Let h denote the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia set J(T) of a parabolic rational map T. In this paper we prove that (after normalisation) the h-conformal measure on J(T) equals the h-dimensional Hausdorff measure Hh on J(T), if h ≥ 1, and equals the h-dimensional packing measure Πh on J(T), if h ≤ 1. Moreover, if h < 1, then Hh = 0 and, if h > 1, then Πh(J(T)) = ∞.

Let ƒ be an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the plane such that ƒ-Id is contracting. Under these hypotheses, we establish the existence for every periodic orbit , of a fixed point which has a nonzero linking number with .

Let f be an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of ℝ2 which is fixed point free. The Brouwer ‘plane translation theorem’ asserts that every x0 ∈ ℝ2 is contained in a domain of translation for f i.e. an open connected subset of ℝ2 whose boundary is L ∪ f(L) where L is the image of a proper embedding of ℝ in ℝ2, such that L separates f(L) and f−1(L). In addition to a short new proof of this result we show that there exists a smooth Morse function g: ℝ2 → ℝ such that g(f(x)) < g(x) for all x and the level set of g containing x0 is connected and non-compact (and hence the image of a properly embedded line).

This paper considers the closing problem, r≥2, for flows on T2 with finitely many singularities. We study the action of such flows on circles transverse to the flow, using Katznelson and Ornstein's picture of rigid rotations as Rokhlin towers. We are able to obtain closing on purely topological grounds for a large class of flows by means of perturbations which simply twist a flow along an embedded transverse circle (twist-perturbations). However, we give an example of a flow (with finitely many singularities) for which no small twist-perturbation yields closing; indeed such perturbations either leave the non-wandering set unchanged or else collapse it to the set of singularities.

Let X, H+, H− be vector fields tangent, respectively, to an Anosov flow and its expanding and contracting foliations in a compact three-dimensional manifold, with γ, α+, α− one forms dual to them. If α+([H+, H−]) = α−([H+, H−]) and γ([H+, H−]) = α−([X, H−]) − α+([X, H+]), then the manifold has the structure of the unit tangent bundle of a Riemannian orbifold with geodesic flow field X.

In this note we study Borel-probability measures on the unit tangent bundle ofa compact negatively curved manifold M that are invariant under the geodesic flow. We interpret the entropy of such a measure as a Hausdorff dimension with respect to a natural family of distances on the ideal boundary of the universal covering of M. This in term yields necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of time preserving conjugacies of geodesic flows.

We investigate the behaviour of random homeomorphisms of the circle induced by composing a random homeomorphism of the interval with a randomly chosen rotation. These maps and their iterates are a.s. singular and for each rational number r in [0,1) it is shown that there is a positive probability of obtaining a map with rotation number r. For a ‘canonical’ method of producing these maps, bounds on the probability of obtaining a fixed point are obtained. We estimate this probability via computer simulations in three different ways. Simulations are also carried out for two periods. It remains unknown for this method whether a rational rotation number is obtained a.s.
