Fathi and Pageault have recently shown a connection between Auslander’s generalized recurrent set $\text{GR}(f)$ and Easton’s strong chain recurrent set. We study $\text{GR}(f)$ by examining that connection in more detail, as well as connections with other notions of recurrence. We give equivalent definitions that do not refer to a metric. In particular, we show that $\text{GR}(f^{k})=\text{GR}(f)$ for any $k>0$, and give a characterization of maps for which the generalized recurrent set is different from the ordinary chain recurrent set.

Taubes [Minimal surfaces in germs of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Proceedings of the Casson Fest, Geom. Topol. Monogr.7 (2004), 69–100 (electronic)] introduced the space of minimal hyperbolic germs with elements consisting of the first and second fundamental form of an equivariant immersed minimal disk in hyperbolic 3-space. Herein, we initiate a further study of this space by studying the behavior of a dynamically defined function which records the entropy of the geodesic flow on the associated Riemannian surface. We provide a useful estimate on this function which, in particular, yields a new proof of Bowen’s theorem on the rigidity of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of quasi-Fuchsian groups. These follow from new lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set which allow us to give a quantitative version of Bowen’s rigidity theorem. To demonstrate the strength of the techniques, these results are generalized to convex-cocompact surface groups acting on $n$-dimensional $\text{CAT}\,(-1)$ Riemannian manifolds.

For a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we effect a multifractal analysis, i.e. decompose the set of non-wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of an unstable Lyapunov exponent, and give a partial description of the Lyapunov spectrum which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures, and show the continuity of the Lyapunov spectrum. We also show that the set of points for which the unstable Lyapunov exponents do not exist carries the full Hausdorff dimension.

In this paper we answer positively to a question of whether it is possible for a circle diffeomorphism with breaks to be smoothly conjugate to a rigid rotation in the case where its breaks are lying on pairwise distinct trajectories. An example constructed is a piecewise linear circle homeomorphism that has four break points lying on distinct trajectories and whose invariant measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The irrational rotation number for our example can be chosen to be a Roth number, but not of bounded type.

It is well known that it is possible to construct a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on the 3-torus in a similar way to Kan’s example. It has two hyperbolic physical measures with intermingled basins supported on two embedded tori with Anosov dynamics. A natural question is how robust is the intermingled basin phenomenon for diffeomorphisms defined on boundaryless manifolds? In this work we study partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on the 3-torus and show that the intermingled basin phenomenon is not robust.
