The doctrine of emergent evolutionism has been before the philosophical world for over fifty years, but there are several reasons why another look at it may be opportune. In the first place, the concept of emergence has been analysed with considerable precision during recent decades so that its meaning is more evident now than when it was first introduced. Secondly, new versions of evolutionary theory have made their appearance in this period, and the extent to which they support or undermine the notion of emergence needs to be investigated. Thirdly, the semi-popular writings of Teilhard de Chardin have shown how much vitality evolutionary ideas have in the present intellectual climate. Yet these writings also show how much confusion will be engendered if the treatment is not philosophically adequate, and especially if it fails to grapple with the concept of emergence. Hence it may be useful to look afresh at this whole subject.

L'esthétique, philosophique, notamment depuis Bosanquet, cherche à se donner une histoire, et qu'elle n'y réussisse guère porte à réfléchir tout autant sur l'histoire et la philosophie que sur l'esthétique elle-même. Certains ouvrages de parution récente nous préviennent d'ailleurs de ne pas nous agiter à côté de la question en nous lançant dans des querelles de mots. Les philosophies, nous le savons depuis longtemps, et ils ne se privent pas de nous le rappeler avec une Constance indéfectible, sont de fameux parleurs, toujours un peu sophistiques sur les bords et rarement socratiques tout au fond. Le bruit des paroles nombreuses et haut sonnantes donne l'illusion de dissiper le vide et de dissoudre dans la conscience les choses sans cesse gênantes par leur massivité. Beaucoup de temps et d'érgie se gaspillent à dirimer des faits dont le nom nous dérange. L'esthétique a souffert des maîtres-ès-lexicologie. Et il faut bien avouer que les philosophes esthéticiens ont souvent œuvré contre leur propre intérêt en cultivant avec une prédilection douteuse “cet obscurantisme bien-pensant qui ne cesse de menacer la philosophie”.

Le mouvement laïque du Moyen Age nous est apparu, en gros, comme un phénomène chrétien, parce qu'inhérent à la structure même du christianisme médiéval. Georges de Lagarde le définit comme la revendication par les princes chrétiens d'attributions exercées par les autorités ecclésiastiques, tant dans l'ordre spirituel que dans l'ordre temporel. Il reflète un état social caractéristique du Moyen Age chrétien. D'une part, en effet, les nations chrétiennes appartiennent à une même et unique chrétienté où la distinction entre le citoyen et le chrétien n'a de conséquences pratiques que pour d'infimes minorités juives ou hérétiques vivant en marge de la communauté. D'autre part, l'autorité civile se présente plus volontiers comme une participation à la plénitude de puissance du pape, au temporel comme spirituel, que comme une institution de droit naturel.

The Robbers' Paradox has provided a focus of discussion in some of the recent articles on deontic logic. The paradox affects those systems which recognize in some way the maxim ‘Ought entails can’ and stems from a law, derivable in these systems, which can be put into words in this way:

(i) If doing a necessitates my doing b, then if doing b is forbidden, doing a is forbidden.

To know is to believe but to believe is not necessarily to know. The latter, unfortunate fact gives rise quite naturally to the question: How can we distinguish between those beliefs that qualify as items of knowledge and those that do not? The standard reply given to this question by philosophers is that knowledge is justified belief. Although the reply sounds eminently reasonable it does not really answer the question. Rather than settling the issue it succeeds instead in stirring up a host of philosophical problems of the most thorny and baffling kind. So difficult do these problems become that they have driven many philosophers to the skeptical conclusion that it is impossible to provide any justification for our beliefs at all. My main object in this paper will be to pursue what seems to me to be the most important and difficult of these problems and to examine some of the recent solutions that philosophers have offered for it. Before beginning this task, however, it might be well to clarify the notion of knowledge (as it is normally understood) a bit more fully. Just what qualifies a belief as a justified belief and thus as an item of knowledge?

La linguistique saussurienne paraît avoir exercé, spécialement au cours des années 1951 à 1954, une influence assez considérable sur la pensée de Merleau-Ponty. Un travail de portée plus générale nous ayant amené à mesurer l'importance de la chose pour Pensemble de l'œuvre de ce philosophe, nous allons seulement essayer ici de prećiser un peu le rôle d'une telle influence en nous appuyant sur une analyse de l'interprétation de Saussure par Merleau-Ponty.

The philosophy of history has achieved, in the last decade or two, a place of importance in English-speaking philosophy which it has long had on the continent. Professor Dray has been one of the most active contributors to recent discussions on this group of related topics, first with his Laws and Explanation in History (Oxford University Press, 1957), later in articles published in journals or collections of essays, and most recently in Philosophy of History, an introduction to the subject published in the Prentice-Hall Foundations of Philosophy Series.

Once thought to be on the periphery of philosophical interest, the philosophy of history can no longer be so considered both because of the increasing importance and accuracy of historical knowledge—and the desirability of a correct analysis of it—and because the attempt to achieve this analysis raises problems in the philosophy of mind and epistemology which are generally admitted to be central philosophical interests.
