Formation of Fe-coatings or segregation at the expense of quartz grains is a common process in the tropical environment. Limited information is available about their internal structure at the submicroscopic level. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray microprobe analyses (EDXRMA) techniques were used to identify the nature and arrangement of fundamental mineral particles within the Fe-coatings. Chemical and mineralogical studies showed that the coatings were composed of well-crystallized Fe-oxides, quartz and kaolinite. The EDXRMA analyses revealed the presence of linear concentrations (laminae) of nearly pure Fe oxide along the edges and the contact zone with quartz and within the coatings. Similar atomic proportions of Al and Si in several areas within the interior regions of coatings and the XRD pattern of the crushed coatings are supportive evidence for the presence of kaolinite. Under the TEM, the dense laminae (< 10 μm thick) consisted of elongated Fe-oxide particles (< 1.5 μm long and 0.2 μm thick) accommodated in subparallel arrangement. The interior areas had very high porosity and, in addition to Fe-oxides, contained other minerals: mainly kaolinite, quartz and isolated areas of Al-oxides. High amounts of ultramicroscopic pores (<0.5 μm) in the interior region suggested that dissolution of Fe-oxides occurred under reduced conditions, with subsequent reprecipitation of pure Fe-oxides in the laminae. Very low porosity and parallel arrangement of Fe-oxide particles (laminae) provided new surfaces (barrier) for Fe-accumulation when soil solutions provided new influxes of iron, thereby creating a thicker Fe-coating. The size and geometry of the ultramicroporosity were shown to play a significant role in the dissolution and precipitation of soil minerals, especially those involved in redox reactions.

A comparative study is reported in which kaolinite has been hydrothermally synthesized at several pH conditions. The syntheses were carried out at 220 °C for 3 to 10 d with distilled water or acidic solutions using a mixture of silica-gel derived from alkoxide and gibbsite with a Si/Al ratio of 1:1 as the starting material. Use of acidic solution for the synthesis promotes the dissolution of the starting materials and leads to kaolinitization at an earlier stage of the reaction. However, the rate of kaolinitization is found to be rather slow, in comparison to the reaction with distilled water. The synthetic kaolinite was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction pattern. Kaolinite synthesized with distilled water was poorly grown for direction of the stacking. For example, crystallite size along the c*-axis = 155 Å, whereas kaolinite synthesized with acidic solution gave a higher crystallite size along the c*-axis, such as 253 Å in the case of the synthesis with 0.1 N HCl. Hinckley index of the synthetic kaolinite was varied from 0.35 to 0.80 by the acidity of the reaction. Different kaolinitization processes are implied by differences observed in the rate of kaolinitization, which has an influence on the nature of the stacking faults of the kaolinite.

Currently, two commercial plants, operating in the Athabasca region of Alberta, produce approximately 20 percent of Canada's petroleum requirements from oil sands. Surface mined oil sand is treated in a water based separation process that yields large volumes of clay tailings with poor settling and compaction characteristics. Clay particles, suspended in the pond water, interact with salts, dissolved from the oil sands ore, to produce mature fine tailings (MFT) containing only 20 to 50 w/w% solids. As a result, large sedimentation ponds are required to produce enough process water to recycle for the plant. Tailings pond dykes can only be constructed during a short summer season. Consequently, the capability to predict production rate and final volume of MFT is essential for mine planning and tailings disposal operations.

Previous research has demonstrated that a small fraction of nano sized clay particles (20 to 300 nm) effectively controls the bulk properties of MFT. These particles are present in the original ore and become mobilized into the water phase during the oil separation process. In this work, the nano sized particles have been separated from the bulk tailings and subjected to a fundamental study of their flocculation behavior in model tailings water.

Photon correlation spectroscopy and a deuterium NMR method were used to follow particle flocculation and gelation processes. These results were correlated with particle settling data measured under the same conditions. It was determined that the nano particles form fractal flocs that eventually interact to give a thixotropic gel. The ultimate sediment volume produced is almost entirely dependent on the original concentration of nano particles while the rate of water release is governed primarily by electrolyte concentration.

Shewanella putrefaciens is a species of metal-reducing bacteria with a versatile respiratory metabolism. This study reports that S. putrefaciens strain MR-1 rapidly reduces Fe(III) within smectite clay minerals. Up to 15% of the structural Fe within ferruginous smectite (sample SWa-1, Source Clays Repository of the Clay Minerals Society) was reduced by MR-1 in 4 h, and a range of 25% to 41% of structural Fe was reduced after 6 to 12 d during culture. Conditions for which smectite reduction was optimal, that is, pH 5 to 6, at 25 to 37 °C, are consistent with an enzymatic process and not with simple chemical reduction. Smectite reduction required viable cells, and was coupled to energy generation and carbon metabolism for MR-1 cultures with smectite added as the sole electron acceptor. Iron(III) reduction catalyzed by MR-1 was inhibited under aerobic conditions, and under anaerobic conditions it was inhibited by the addition of nitrate as an alternate electron acceptor or by the metabolic inhibitors tetrachlorosali-cylanilide (TCS) or quinacrine hydrochloride. Genetic mutants of MR-1 deficient in anaerobic respiration reduced significantly less structural Fe than wild-type cells. In a minimal medium with formate or lactate as the electron donor, more than three times the amount of smectite was reduced over no-carbon controls. These data point to at least one mechanism that may be responsible for the microbial reduction of clay minerals within soils, namely, anaerobic respiration, and indicate that pure cultures of MR-1 provide an effective model system for soil scientists and mineralogists interested in clay reduction. Given the ubiquitous distribution and versatile metabolism of MR-1, these studies may have further implications for bioremediation and water quality in soils and sediments.

TEM characterization of stacking relations in I/S of expanded shale samples from the Gulf Coast and Michigan Basin was carried out to address the issues of the degree of coherency and the nature of layer stacking sequences in smectite, I/S and illite. The two-dimensional lattice fringe images obtained from this study show that cross fringes are commonly observed to be continuous over at least 3–4 layers for smectite, 6–7 layers for ordered I/S and 9–10 layers for illite-rich I/S. This demonstrates that such sequences are coherent, or at least semi-coherent (in smectite) units (MacEwan crystallites). The observations demonstrate that so-called fundamental particles are fragments of MacEwan crystallites formed primarily as a result of disaggregation along weakly-bonded smectite interlayers. However, both 0k1 and h01 reflections may coexist in selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns. The frequency of occurrence of the coexistence in SAED patterns decreases in the order smectite, I/S and illite for Gulf Coast samples. This is consistent with the presence of turbostratically-related interfaces in packets of all of these materials. Therefore, any given layer sequence in smectite, ordered I/S and illite may have both turbostratic and coherent interfaces. The proportion of coherently-related layers increases with increasing proportion of illite-like layers. The concept of fundamental or elementary particles is not related to layer sequences in non-disaggregated, original rocks. Indeed, it implies relations that are not valid.

The lattice fringe images, SAED and optical diffraction patterns demonstrate that where layers are coherently-related, 2M1 is the dominant polytypic sequence in all samples. However, this periodic 2M1 stacking is so frequently interrupted by stacking faults in smectite that it gives rise to apparent lMd polytypism. The degree to which the periodic 2M1 sequences are interrupted by stacking faults decreases with increasing proportion of illite-like layers. The SAED patterns of I/S and illite unmodified since its formation are diffuse parallel to c* and have poorly-defined, non-periodic reflections for indices k ≠ 3N as a measure of local ordering superimposed on poorly-ordered coherent sequences with a turbostratic component. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, as integrated over domains with a range of heterogeneous stacking relations, do not represent simple mixtures of discrete IM and 2M1 polytypes.

The observations of this study imply that dissolution-crystallization is a dominant mechanism for the smectite-to-illite transition. The semi-coherent stacking of smectite-like layers in smectite-rich samples implies that either a dissolution-crystallization process took place subsequent to deposition of detrital smectite or that Gulf Coast smectite is an in-situ alteration product of volcanic ash.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), adsorption and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques were used to determine the fractal dimensions (D) of 3 natural reference clays: 1) a kaolinite (KGa-2); 2) a hectorite (SHCa-1), and 3) a Ca-montmorillonite (STx-1). The surfaces of these clays were found to be fractal with D values close to 2.0. This is consistent with the common description of clay mineral surfaces as smooth and planar. Some surface irregularities were observed for hectorite and Ca-montmorillonite as a result of impurities in the materials. The SAXS method generated comparable D values for KGa-2 and STx-1. These results are supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SAXS and adsorption methods were found to probe the surface irregularities of the clays while the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique seems to reflect the mass distribution of certain sites in the material. Since the surface nature of clays is responsible for their reactivity in natural systems, SAXS and adsorption techniques would be the methods of choice for their fractal characterization. Due to its wider applicable characterization size-range, the SAXS method appears to be better suited for the determination of the fractal dimensions of clay minerals.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of small quantities of clay mounted on glass slides using conventional Bragg-Brentano geometry generally produces unsatisfactory low-intensity reflections masked by amorphous substrate scatter. Glancing-incidence asymmetric Bragg diffraction, an alternative uncoupled geometry, uses a fixed low-incidence angle and parallel-beam optics to increase path length through the sample and decrease X-ray penetration into the substrate. To evaluate this technique on thin soil clay films, results from conventional Bragg-Brentano and glancing-incidence diffraction (GID) were compared for progressively diluted clay suspensions separated from 2 southeastern soils with typical mineral assemblages. Patterns produced by GID showed overall higher reflection intensities and reduced substrate scatter, especially at higher 2θ angles within the amorphous glass region. Using GID, positive identification of clay minerals was obtained from sample quantities as small as 0.005 mg cm−2 and suspensions as dilute as 29 mg L−1.

Shortly after construction of a subdivision in the southwest Denver metropolitan area in 1986, a portion of the subdivision built directly on steeply-dipping strata of the Pierre Shale began experiencing damaging differential movements, causing house foundations to fail and pavements to warp and crack. This formation is a Late Cretaceous marine clay-shale composed predominantly of fluvial mixed-layer illite/smectite and quartz. During deposition of the shale, periodic and explosive volcanism generated thin beds of bentonite, consisting initially of volcanic ash and subsequently altered to nearly pure smectite. Some of these bentonite beds were exposed in a trench adjacent to the subdivision and perpendicular to the strike of the steeply-dipping strata. The thickest bentonite beds correlated well with linear heave features that these beds parallel the bedrock strike throughout the subdivision were mapped via severely deformed pavements. Mineralogical data show the bentonite bed that correlates with the worst damage within the subdivision consists of about 62% smectite by weight with mixed-layer illite/smectite expandability of 92%. By comparison, a sample of the typical silty claystone, which is fluvial mixed-layer illite/smectite mixed with detrital quartz from the adjacent strata, had about 23% smectite by weight with 70% to 90% illite/smectite expandability. Geotechnical tests for swell potential show that samples of 2 bentonite beds swelled 39% to 43% compared to 2% to 8% for samples of the typical silty claystone. It is proposed that differential swell resulting from stratigraphically-controlled differences in clay mineralogy and grain-size is the primary factor controlling extreme damage for this geologic setting.

The exchange reactions of Na, Ca and Mg on montmorillonite are revisited employing recently developed analytical and theoretical approaches. The fractional adsorption of the cations has been determined by displacing them from the adsorbed state in one step, using a low concentration of an organic cation of large binding affinity. The analysis of displaced and solution cations employed inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. An adsorption model was employed in the analysis of the data. The procedure consists of solving the electrostatic Gouy-Chapman equations and calculating adsorbed amounts of the cations as the sum of the cations residing in the double layer region, and the cations chemically bound to the surface, in a closed system. The model also accounts explicitly for cation complexation in solution. Thus the calculations also considered the adsorption of CaCl+ and MgCl+, which eliminated the apparent increase of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) with divalent cation concentration. The model could explain and yield predictions for our measured adsorbed amounts as well as previously published data, in the binary and ternary systems of Ca/Mg/Na, provided that the fraction of surface sites occupied by calcium did not exceed 0.4. For a larger coverage of surface sites by calcium, a fit of the experimental data required an order of magnitude increase in the binding coefficients of the divalent cations in the binary system Ca/Na and in the ternary system Ca/Mg/Na.

The orientation of TMPA cations on montmorillonite affects the adsorbate-accessible siloxane surface area and determines whether the TMPA phenyl ring can interact with other aromatic adsorbates by π-π interactions. The purpose of this study was to determine the orientation of TMPA ions in the interlayer of normal-charge and reduced-charge Wyoming montmorillonite. The orientation of TMPA's phenyl group was investigated using infrared dichroism of selected aromatic ring vibrations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and MacEwan Fourier transforms were used to determine interlayer spacings and to ascertain whether reduced-charge Wyoming montmorillonite is a randomly interstratified mixture of layers with two different d-spacings. For normal-charge montmorillonite, the infrared results showed that the C-N bond axis is neither perpendicular nor parallel to the surface, yet X-ray data suggested that the TMPA phenyl ring is perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to the siloxane surface. In this orientation, the average adsorbate-accessible space between adjacent TMPA ions is 24 Å2, or about 1/3 of the total surface. When the phenyl ring of TMPA is perpendicular to the clay surface, aromatic compounds should be able to interact with TMPA's aromatic ring by π-π interactions, while polar compounds such as water can interact with positively charged nitrogen atom. The reduced-charge montmorillonite used in this study is a randomly interstratified mixture of about 25% collapsed layers with no adsorbed cations and 75% expanded layers that are propped open by TMPA's methyl groups, not by the aromatic ring. The adsorbate-accessible surface area on expanded layers of reduced-charge montmorillonite is 1.5 to 2 times that on normal-charge TMPA-clay, depending on the orientation of TMPA's aromatic ring.

Variation of the NH4+-exchange and CO2-adsorption capacities with zeolite content was investigated in detail to assess the potential use of these capacities for the estimation of the zeolite contents of the samples taken from the Bigadiç clinoptilolite deposit in western Anatolia, as an alternative to the widely used semi-quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Samples with known clinoptilolite contents taken from 2 different zones with fine- and coarse-grained tuffs of the Bigadiç deposit were used for this purpose. Na-enriched forms of the samples were prepared by repeated ion-exchange with NaCl solutions, and NH4+-forms by repeated Na exchange followed by NH4+ exchange with NH4Cl solutions, which in turn were calcined to obtain the H-forms. NH4+-exchange capacities by Kjeldahl analyses of the NH4+-forms and CO2 adsorption isotherms in the 0 to 100 kPa range of Na- and H-forms of the samples were determined. Dubinin-Astakhov model parameters were calculated from the isotherm data.

A strong relationship exists between the experimental CO2-adsorption capacities at 100 kPa of the Na-forms and the zeolite contents of the samples. Although the Dubinin-Astakhov model represented the isotherm data quite well, the relationships between the amounts of adsorbate at saturation pressure, calculated from the model, and the zeolite contents of the samples were weaker. The strength of the relationship between NH4+ exchange capacities and zeolite contents was seen to vary with the zone of origin. There is a very strong relationship between the adsorption and ion-exchange capacities of the samples in their Na-forms taken from the fine-grained zone, indicating that either ion-exchange or adsorption capacity measurements can be used to estimate the zeolite contents of the samples taken from this zone, whereas, significant diffusion hindrance was observed against ion-exchange of hydrated cations from aqueous solutions for some samples from the coarse-grained zone. Inspection of the data pointed to systematic errors in the zeolite contents determined by a semi-quantitative XRD technique. When both zones are considered together, CO2-adsorption capacities at 100 kPa of the samples in their Na-forms can be used as a reliable measure of the zeolite content, which in turn is an important index to predict the performance of natural samples in various applications.

Results are presented of a diagenetic study from the 1300 m thick Oligocene Molasse deposits penetrated by the Thônex geothermal exploration well (Geneva, Switzerland). The x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of fine-grained rocks indicate the following diagenetic changes: a decrease of illite/smectite (US) expandability from approximately 90% to 30% with depth, a decrease of the amount of US in the clay mineral fraction, and the appearance of corrensite at depths >750 m. The transition from random US to ordered I/S occurs at the base of the Thônex well (1200 to 1300 m) and is associated with a coal rank of about 0.7% Rr (mean random vitrinite reflectance) corresponding to paleotemperatures of 110 to 115 °C Corrensite appears at a vitrinite reflectance value of 0.6% Rr and a corresponding paleotemperature of 100 °C. The amount of post-Molasse erosion is estimated to be approximately 2 km. Thermal history modeling of the Thônex well suggests maximum paleotemperatures of 80 to 115°C and an average paleogeothermal gradient of 27 °C/km during Late Miocene maximum burial conditions.

The degree of flocculation of aqueous suspensions of microcrystalline goethite was measured in salts of monovalent, divalent and trivalent cations at pH 6.0–6.5 over a range of ionic strengths using light scattering measurements at 650 nm. Varying concentrations of soluble humic material as well as the organic ligands, salicylate and citrate, were tested for their effect on flocculation. It was found that KCl and NaCl induced flocculation at lower ionic strength than CaCl2, while AlCl3 favored dispersion at all ionic strengths tested. The simple organic ligands promoted flocculation at low concentration, with citrate having a more pronounced effect than salicylate. At higher concentrations, these ligands reversed their effect, inducing a more dispersed state of the oxide. The organic ligand effect on dispersibility was modified by the particular metal cation present, with Ca2+ being more conducive to flocculation than K+. Soluble humic materials affected goethite flocculation in a qualitatively similar way to that of the simple organic ligands, that is low concentrations favored flocculation while high concentrations induced dispersion. This dispersing effect was partially suppressed by the presence of Ca2+, and completely suppressed by Al3+. Thus, soluble humic substances at relatively high concentrations appear to have a marked dispersing effect on goethite in the absence of polyvalent cations, and a strongly flocculating effect in their presence.

The results can be explained qualitatively by a simple oxide surface charge model, in which chemi-sorption of multivalent cations or organic ligands alters the surface charge. Reactions that increase the magnitude of positive or negative surface charge favor dispersion, while those that reduce the magnitude of charge favor flocculation.

Two ferriphlogopite-1M crystals with a composition (K0.99Na0.01)Σ=1.00(Mg2.73Fe2+0.17Fe3+0.08-Ti0.01)Σ=2.299[(Fe3+0.95Si3.05)Σ=4.00O10.17](OH)1.79F0.04 (sample S1) and (K1.02)Σ=1.02(Mg2.68Fe2+0.20Fe3+0.11-Mn0.01)Σ=3.00[(Fe3+0.95Si3.05)Σ=4.00O10.18](OH)1.75F0.07 (sample S2) occur within an alkali-carbonatic complex near Tapira, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Each crystal was studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The least-squares refinements of space group C2/m resulted in R values of 0.031 for S1 and 0.025 for S2. Results showed that Fe3+ substitutes for Si within the tetrahedral sites and that the Fe distribution is fully disordered. The octahedral sites are preferentially occupied by Mg. The presence of Fe3+ within the tetrahedral sheet produces increased cell edge lengths. For sample S1, a = 5.362 Å, b = 9.288 Å, c = 10.321 Å and the monoclinic β angle was: β = 99.99°. For sample S2, a = 5.3649 Å, b = 9.2924 Å, c = 10.3255 Å and the monoclinic β angle was: β = 99.988°. The tetrahedral rotation angle of α = 11.5° is necessary for tetrahedral and octahedral sheet congruency. The enlarged tetrahedral sites are regular, with cations close to their geometric center. Ferriphlogopites have identical mean bond lengths for M1 and M2 sites within standard deviation. The M1-O3 and M2-O3 bond lengths are longer than the mean so that O3 may articulate with the tetrahedra.

The K-Ar systematics of illite/smectite (I/S) mixed layers in deeply buried shales from the Gulf Coast, the North Sea and the Mahakam Delta basins have been compared to provide additional perspectives on the diagenetic evolution of these minerals. Comparison of the results suggests that illitization proceeds similarly in the 3 basins, at least for the increase in the illite-layer and K contents, despite differences in the provenance of the detrital components, the ages of deposition, the depths of burial and the tectonic history of the basins. Analysis of the trends with depth in the illite-layer and K contents of I/S-enriched size fractions of shales in the North Sea and the Mahakam Delta basins shows that these trends represent segments of the more complete trends from I/S minerals of the Gulf Coast area.

The trends with depth in the radiogenic 40Ar contents and in the K-Ar ages of the I/S-rich fractions in the North Sea and Mahakam Delta basins suggest that, relative to the reference trends of the Gulf Coast area, the K-Ar system of the clay material is more dependent on the behavior of the radiogenic 40Ar than on the occurrence or non-occurrence of detrital grains in the size fractions. Recasting of the available data suggests that retention of radiogenic 40Ar by the illite-type minerals occurs in the intense illitization zone and release occurs in the deeper part of the basins. We therefore speculate that the illitization process of the I/S mixed layers of progressively buried shale-type sediments could be controlled by a transformation process integrating dissolution of detrital components in poral rock environments relatively impermeable to radiogenic 40Ar. These excesses, which might be partly or completely erased in deeper parts of the sedimentary basins, question the application of the K-Ar dating method on clay minerals extracted from shales.

Water inhibits sorption of uncharged organic compounds on montmorillonites saturated with small alkylammonium cations such as tetramethylammonium (TMA) and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA). As a first step toward understanding the mechanism by which water inhibits arene sorption on TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites, infrared spectroscopy and water sorption isotherm experiments were conducted to determine whether water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations rather than the siloxane surface. Infrared spectra of normal-charge and reduced-charge TMA- and TMPA-montmorillonites were obtained at partial water vapor pressures from 0.075 to 0.92 to determine if water vapor hydrates the adsorbed cations. Water adsorbed at partial pressures from 0 to about 0.2 caused the wave-number position of the HOH deformation vibration of adsorbed water to shift 4 to 10 cm-1 to higher wavenumber and the methyl deformation vibrations of adsorbed TMA and TMPA cations to shift 1 to 2 cm-1 to higher wavenumber, providing evidence that water interacts directly with adsorbed TMA and TMPA ions. There were no shifts in the ring stretching or C-H out-of-plane vibrations of TMPA, which indicates that water interacts with the methyl groups of TMPA, not with TMPA's aromatic ring. Water vapor sorption isotherms showed that normal-charge montmorillonites adsorb more water than do reduced-charge montmorillonites, consistent with the higher concentration of adsorbed cations on normal-charge clay. More water was adsorbed by TMA-montmorillonite than by TMPA-montmorillonite, consistent with the higher hydration energy of TMA. Thus, both the infrared and sorption isotherm results show that water preferentially hydrates adsorbed TMA and TMPA, not the siloxane surface of montmorillonite.

A well-characterized kaolinite has been hydrated in order to test the hypothesis that platey kaolinite will roll upon hydration. Kaolinite hydrates are prepared by repeated intercalation of kaolinite with potassium acetate and subsequent washing with water. On hydration, kaolinite plates roll along the major crystallographic directions to form tubes identical to proper tubular halloysite. Most tubes are elongated along the b crystallographic axis, while some are elongated along the a axis. Overall, the tubes exhibit a range of crystallinity. Well-ordered examples show a 2-layer structure, while poorly ordered tubes show little or no 3-dimensional order. Cross-sectional views of the formed tubes show both smoothly curved layers and planar faces. These characteristics of the experimentally formed tubes are shared by natural halloysites. Therefore, it is proposed that planar kaolinite can transform to tubular halloysite.

Municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash is the slag-like material produced by the incineration of municipal waste and is predominantly composed of glassy constituents, which include inherited manufactured glasses and glasses formed during incineration. Previous results indicate evidence of neoformation of well-ordered clay (illite) from glasses in MSWI bottom ash after 12 y of natural weathering. We investigated the mechanism and conditions of clay formation from glasses during natural weathering using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), experimental leaching experiments and ammonium oxalate extractions. It was concluded that the high surface area and initially high “active” Al and associated Si content predispose the ash to form clay minerals on a relatively short time scale. This work provides evidence that the composition of secondary amorphous aluminosilicate and thus, the type of clay mineral which may form, is determined by the pH of the pore solution rather than by the glass composition. Presumably alternate wetting and drying of the ash during disposal greatly accelerates the formation of well-ordered clays.
