Although the species of Ophiogomphus are well defined in the adult stage their nymphs are extremely uniform in structure and are difficult to separate. This is perhaps not remarkable in view of the similarity of their habitats, all the species being shallow burrowers in running streams, usually clear, with a sandy or pebbly bottom, where they occupy the edges of currents, gentle riffles, or pools at the foot of rapids.

The species, integrum Eaton, described from material collected in Washington and Oregon states, was designated by Eaton as the genotype of Cinygma. I have already (1926, Can. Ent. LVIII, 302) recorded the capture of adults of this species in the Coast range of British Columbia and at the time expressed some doubt as to whether all the species at present included in this genus were strictly congeneric. Since nymphal structures have been recognized by a number of recent workers as of great importance in furnishing distinguishing characters in the Heptagenine genera it was with considerable interest that I discovered among material collected in the Hope Mts., B. C. in 1932 by my assistant, Mr. A. N. Gartrell, a bred female adult of integrum, together with its nymphal exuvia, preserved in alcohol. A study of this exuvia soon convinced me that in the nymphal gills and mouth-parts there are excellent and in part unique structural details which should at once establish not only the validity of the genus but also its limitations and position in the group of allied genera.

In 1915 Wickware reported on an investigation at Ottawa, of a serious disease which had appeared anlong ducks. Examination of the blood of affected ducks showed the presence of a protozoon parasite which Wickware named Leucocytozoon anatis. O'Roke (1930) reports that the disease is apparently not harmful to adult ducks, but is pathogenic to ducklings, the mortality being 35 per cent in the cases studied.

Any evidence which would help us to forecast grasshopper outbreaks, or to anticipate and check them before they become acute, is worth considering and on this account the recently annunciated “phase” theory, and the still later “reservation” theory, should secure the careful consideration of American entomologists.

The digger wasp, S. breviceps, has been encountered frequently in the field while studying nesting bees and wasps. Ammophila pruinosa Cress., A. varipes Cress., and A. comanche Cam., according to Professor Fernald, must be considered as synonyms. It is a specics of considerable morphological variation with all intergrades occuring between the extremes. It is not a large insect but it makes up in numbers, it would seem, for what it lacks in individual size.

Since 1925 the lecanium scale Eulecanium coryli (L) has been one of the most destructive insects in the coast region of British Columbia. It was introduced accidentally from Europe about 1913. A great variety of hosts are attacked, the chief of these, in order of preference, being: alder, horse-chest-nut, maples of several species, hawthorn, mountain ash, laurel, elm and garden roses; a few scales are often to be found on species of Rubus, Populus, Betula and Salix.

Aparity is that development in reproduction wherein the adult mother retains the eggs instead of laying them. The result is that the young hatch in the mother's body and are forced to feed on her tissues until they have eaten their way out. Such a condition might be construed as parasitism on the adult mother. Since the phenomenon is brought on by the parent and is forced upon the young, it can hartdly be called parasitism, unless the old term obligate parasite is given a new meaning.

Female.—Length 7 mm. Head very little wider than thorax, cheeks, viewed from the side, broader than the temples; face much broader than long, shallowly sparsely punctate; eyes large, prominent; malar space about as long as basal width of mandible; clypeus convex, much less than twice as broad as long, the anterior margin truncate; distance from clypeal foveae to eyes about equal to length of clypeus; lateral ocelli not distinctly larger than median ocellus; longest segment of maxillary palpus distinctly shorter than second segment of antennal flagellum; apical segment of labial palpus much longer than preceding segment; antennae of the type broken, seven segments of flagellum present; first flagellar segment about as long as height of eyes.

Oncocnemis saundersiana Grt. The young larvae of this species were first found at Bobcaygeon, Ont., in June, 1931, feeding within the blossoms of a Pentstemon sp. but died before reaching maturity. At the same time and place in 1932 a number of more fully grown larvae were secured, either feeding on the blossoms or resting flat against the main stem of the plant; the larvae are smooth, slender and of a pale green color, variably suffused with a pinkish shade, exactly matching the Pentstemon blossoms, and at times they may be entirely pink, especially in those instances where the caterpillar is resting on the flowerheads. Pupation takes place in the earth and the moth emerges in late August.

During the spring of 1933, an adult convergent ladybird beetle, Hippodamia convergens Guerin, was placed in a 3-dram homeopathic vial with a number of nymphs of the potato psyllid, Paratrioza cockerelli (Sulc). The ladybird immediately grabbed a psyllid nymph and began to eat it. Ten fifth-instar psyllid nymphs were eaten by this predaceous beetle during the one and one-half hours that it was caged with the nymphs. It was noted that moving nymphs were taken more quickly than those at rest, but the beetle showed no reluctance at taking the scale-like nymphs which were quietly feeding.

The application of Dyar's Law to lepidopterous larvae has been discussed by numerous investigators, who have shown that in many species the head-widths follow a regular geometrical progression in successive instars. Taylor reviews Dyar's Law thoroughly and tests it out on the sawfly, Phyllotoma nemorata (Fallen). The same author examines Dyar's measurements on 46 species of sawfly larvae and concludes that Dyar's Law holds as well for the sawfly larvae as for the 28 species of lepidopterous larvae on which the rule was originally based.

Pseudococcus comstocki Kuwana is classed among the injurious mealy-bugs. It attacks a wide range of host plants. So far it has become abundant in the United States only in certain states east of the Mississippi River. In Connecticut it has received the name catalpa mealybug, because of its injuriousness to that plant. It is recorded as attacking many food-producing plants, but so far it has not been rated as a serious pest of any commercial crop plants. P. comstocki has been recorded from California by G. F. Ferris, where it was taken on Monterey pines growing on the campus of Stanford University. Ferris also records this mealybug from a number of host plants, including citrus, collected in Japan by Dr. Kuwana. A lookout has been kept for the appearance of P. comstocki in southern California, as it is considered to be a potential pest of citrus.

While making an intensive study of the bark beetles of Western North America, I noticed that two of the species in the genus Carphoborus were new. Since the last key to the species of this genus has been compiled (Swaine, 1918) Dr. Swaine has described five new species which with my two would more than double the number in the genus. I therefore feel that a new key should be made.

The species here described somewhat superficially resembles Staphylinus cinnamopterus Grav., yet appears distinct and to be hitherto uncharacterized. In admiration of Professor J. H. McGregor of Columbia University, and in appreciation of kindnesses tendered me, I propose to name this new form:

Staphylinus macgregori n. sp.

Habitus nearly as in cinnamopterus but larger in size and rather more robust; piceous, the elytra fusco-ferrugineus, the legs fulvo-ferrugineus ; pubescence inclined, on the head, thorax, and elytra of a rusty hue and with few erect, brown setae, on abdomen fusco-piceous pubescence intermixing with fewer rusty-colored hairs and an abundance of dark setae; anterior tarsi broadly dilated in both sexes ; head slightly narrower than prothorax, widest at basal fourth thence gradually narrowing anteriorly, hind angles obtusely prominent, punctures round and ocellate throughout, close-set but clearly separated by shining interspaces, sparser anteriorly; mandibles longer and more slender than in cinnamopterus, the two inner teeth much less prominent and more poorly developed; antennae piceous to fuscopiceous, a third longer than head; prothorax but slightly wider than head, truncate at apex, rounded at base, punctures ocellate, more elongate at the sides than those of head and somewhat larger, smaller and more closely set than in cinnamopterus but separated by shining interspaces, the median line evident, polished, but very narrow throughout, in places ill-defined or obliterated; scutellum velvety black; elytra fusco-ferrugineus, longer than wide, very finely but strongly and densely punctate, clothed with a decurved rusty-colored pubescence similar to that of head and thorax but more dense; abdomen obscurely fulvous at tip, piceous, coriaceo-reticulate and very sparsely and finely punctate at sides, with median velvety fuliginous spots suffering intermixture of short cinereous hairs at the sides; under surface of abdomen clothed with sparse, long, depressed, fuscs-piceous pubescence, coriaceo-reticulate, punctures very fine and sparse, slightly less sparsely distributed at sides of segments, the male fifth ventral with a very broad circular and feeble sinuation medially, the male sixth ventral obscurely fulvous at tip and with a broad, rounded, median emargination about one half as deep as long, fifth ventral of female truncate, sixth female ventral rounded evenly and fulvous. Length ( ) 10.0-12.7 mm.; width 3.0-3.3 mm.

A small robust species, length 1.5-2.5 mm.

Front of the male deeply concave, clothed with short bristle-like hairs, sparsely granulate-punctate, surface opaque, with a long, shining, median carina; second suture of the antennal club subtransverse. Pronotum wider than long, 5.5:3.5; sides slightly rounded, narrowing on the anterior half, constricted behind the anterior margin; the constriction extends across the dorsum, widening on the disk thereby simulating a wide, deep impression on the anterior third; anterior margin is broadly rounded; the surface is moderately clothed with short setae and the punctures are large, dense, and deep.

Incidental to the collecting of ticks and other animal parasites in the Bitterroot Valley of Southwestern Montana, a number of nests of magpies. Pica pica hudsonicus, and a nest of the common crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos, were examined particularly for blood sucking dipterous larvae, Protocalliphora spp.

The following descriptions of five sawflies of the genus Neodiprion are presented at this time in order that the names may be available for use in economic literature. Some of the specimens have been received from Dr. J. M. Swaine, Associate Dominion Entomologist, Entomological Branch, Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, Canada. All of the species are known to defoliate coniferous evergreen trees in forested areas in Canada.

The difference in food plants and seasonal life-history between beetles of the species Lema trilineata Oliv. in Manitoba and the same species in Eastern Canada and Eastern United States indicates rather strongly that they belong to different biological races. The belief was entertained for a time that the Manitoba beetle belonged to an entirely different species, but a series of adults sent to Mr. W. J. Brown of the Dominion Entomological Branch, Ottawa, proved to be identical with the eastern species.

Length 5.7 to 6.1 mm., width 1.65 to 1.75 mm. Form narrow, parallel, color piceous bronzed, base of antennae, prosternal lobe and legs reddish, surface moderately shining, distinctly pale pubescent.

In size, form, color and all other details except as mentioned below, this species is so similar to the common quercinus as to be practically indistinguishable to the casual eye.
