page 36 note 3 It appears in the forged charter of Edgar for Glastonbury quoted by William of Malmesbury in the third recension of his Gesta Regum (ed. W. Stubbs (RS, 1887–9), i. 170).

page 36 note 4 The clauses concerning the abbey's liberties seem also to have provided the basis for a spurious charter of William I for Battle (Man. Ang., iii. 245Google Scholar; Regesta, i. 29, no. 113Google Scholar), forged in 1211 × 15 (Searle, E., ‘Battle abbey and exemption: the forged charters’, EHR lxxxiii (1968), 464).Google Scholar

page 49 note 1 This land may be identified with the Domesday holding of Henry de Ferrers in Reading (VCH Berks, i. 334), which appears to have been given to Tutbury Priory, probably before the foundation of Reading, and subsequently, according to Pope Alexander III's confirmation to Tutbury (dated 1162–3), exchanged for Brincheale (unidentified) by ‘King Henry’ (Cartl. Tutbury, 24). Since this probably refers to Henry I, the Robert de Ferrers named in Henry II's confirmation to Reading is probably Henry de Ferrers’ son, who succeeded him by 1130 and died in 1139.

page 92 note 3 All the allowances under 25 Henry III appear in the estreat of amercements from the Berks, eyre of 1241 (see no. 124).

page 92 note 4 PR 26 Henry III, 66Google Scholar; see also Clanchy, ibid., xxxviii. The following amercements do not appear on the Pipe Roll for 26 Henry III and probably belong to 27 Henry III.

page 92 note 5 For this ruling in 1233–4, see Clanchy, ibid., xxxvii. The present reply confusingly cites what appear to be automatic allowances to the abbey after this date, but these were in fact made by special writ (Clanchy, xxxviii).

The king had confirmed the abbey's liberties by inspeximus of Edward III's inspeximus (no. 109) in 1381 (Cal. Chart. R., v. 276).Google Scholar
