1 The history of the word may now be read in the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. Besides Pliny and Suetonius it is there cited only from Marcellus of Bordeaux (5th century: avis galerita quae Gallice alauda dicitur), Gregory of Tours (6th century: avis coredallus quam alaudam vocamus), and the Bern scholia on Virgil (8th century, thought to be the work of a Celt: quod rustici alodarium vocant, tractum de avibus quas alaudas vocant).
