Page 8 note 1 I mean with scholars’ conjectures in general, not mine in particular. Perhaps I may be permitted to take this opportunity of setting the record straight on a minor matter raised by the reviewer of my Repertory of Conjectures on Aeschylus in Gnomon (1965), p. 657, who wrote: ’ Dawe claims as his own the conjecture made by me in this Journal, 34. 1962. 742.' The facts are (1) is the reading of most of the MSS. (2) was the conjecture which the reviewer published as his own. (3) This conjecture had been suggested by me in my doctoral thesis which remained in the hands of the examiners throughout the summer of 1961. (4) The reviewer was one of the examiners. I would not for one moment suggest that the reviewer arrived at his proposal by any route other than independent thought or mistaken reminiscence— a common failing to which we are all liable and one documented innumerable times in the Repertory itself. Equally I am sure that my reviewer's unfortunate choice of words arises only from the haste of which the review bears traces elsewhere, and was not meant to imply anything untoward in the integrity of my conduct.
