To survey nationwide opportunities for Balint-type and reflective support group participation and psychotherapy training among doctors classified as Specialty Doctors and Associate Specialists in psychiatry (‘SAS psychiatrists’) and the professional benefits and barriers to access.

Approximately 9% of SAS psychiatrists responded, from all UK regions. A minority reported participating in a Balint-type group (27.3%) or reflective practice/support group (30.9%), and only 6.5% were not interested in participating. Although 44.8% planned to see a psychotherapy case, most reported barriers, particularly time constraints, job plans and lack of support. The 22.1% who reported already gaining psychotherapy case experience reported many benefits, including becoming a better listener (84.8%), more empathetic (81.2%), enjoying work more (78.8%) and overall becoming a better psychiatrist (90.9%).

The reported interest in Balint group and psychotherapy training opportunities exceeded existing provision; psychotherapy case experience benefited professional development and self-reported clinical capabilities. Healthcare trusts and boards need to consider more actively supporting SAS psychotherapy training and reflective practice.

There are numerous challenges in the recruitment and retention of the medical workforce in psychiatry. This mixed-methods study examined the role of psychiatry clinical attachments for international medical graduates (IMGs) to enhance recruitment and retention. An online survey was launched to capture views and perceptions of IMGs about clinical attachments. The quantitative and qualitative responses were analysed to elicit findings.

In total, 92 responses were received, with respondents commonly from India, Pakistan and Egypt. Respondents were mostly aged 25–34, with ≥3 years of psychiatry experience. Over 80% expressed strong interest in completing a psychiatry clinical attachment and believed it would support career progression. Qualitative data indicated that IMGs hoped to gain clinical experience and understanding of the National Health Service (NHS). They wished for a clearer, simpler process for clinical attachments.

Clinical attachment can be mutually beneficial, providing IMGs with opportunity to confidently start their psychiatry career in the UK and enhance medical recruitment in mental health services across the NHS.

This study assesses newly qualified doctors’ confidence in practising clinical skills related to the assessment and management of mental health conditions and how this correlates with other areas of medicine. We conducted a national survey of 1311 Foundation Year 1 doctors in the UK. Survey items assessed confidence recognising mentally unwell patients, conducting a mental state examination, assessing cognition and mental capacity, formulating a psychiatric diagnosis and prescribing psychotropic medications.

A substantial proportion of surveyed doctors lacked confidence in their clinical skills related to mental health and prescribing psychotropic medications. Network analysis revealed that items corresponding to mental health were highly correlated, suggesting a potential generalised lack of confidence in mental healthcare.

We identify areas of lack of confidence in some newly qualified doctors’ ability to assess and manage mental health conditions. Future research might explore how greater exposure to psychiatry, integrated teaching and clinical simulation might better support medical students for future clinical work.
