The bow flow generated by a wide flat-bottomed ship moving in water of finite depth is examined. Solutions obtained using an integral equation technique are presented for a range of different depths and for a range of angles of the front of the bow. The solution for the limiting case of infinite Froude number is obtained as an integral, and numerical solutions are found for the nonlinear problem in which the Froude number is finite. Solutions with smooth separation are shown to exist for all values of Froude number greater than unity, for any bow slope.

A fourth-order nonlinear evolution equation is derived for a wave propagating at the interface of two superposed fluids of infinite depths in the presence of a basic current shear. On the basis of this equation a stability analysis is made for a uniform wave train. Discussions are given for both an air-water interface and a Boussinesq approximation. Significant deviations are noticed from the results obtained from the third-order evolution equation, which is the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In the Boussinesq approximation, it has been possible to compare the present results with the exact numerical analysis of Pullin and Grimshaw [12], and they are found to agree rather favourably.

Various initial and boundary value problems for a 2-dimensional reaction-diffusion equation are studied numerically by an explicit Finite Difference Method (FDM), a Galerkin and a Petrov-Galerkin Finite Element Method (FEM). The results not only show the transition processes from different local initial disturbances to quasitravelling waves, but also demonstrate the long term behaviour of the solutions, which is determined by the system itself and does not depend on the details of the initial disturbances.

In this paper we shall describe a numerical method for the solution of curve flow problems in which the normal velocity of the curve depends locally on the position, normal and curvature of the curve. The method involves approximating the curve by a number of line elements (segments) which are only allowed to move in a direction normal to the element. Hence the normal of each line element remains constant throughout the evolution. In regions of high curvature elements naturally tend to accumulate. The method easily deals with the formation of cusps as found in flame propagation problems and is computationally comparable to a naive marker particle method. As a test of the method we present a number of numerical experiments related to mean curvature flow and flows associated with flame propagation and bushfires.

A calculation of the electromagnetic response of a thin conductor in the presence of an exciting primary magnetic field has been attempted by various authors. Analytic solutions are obtainable when either the conductor is of infinite extent or when the problem possesses some symmetry. The loss of symmetry makes the problem difficult to solve except for the simplest shape – that of a circular conductor. A numerical method has been used for the rectangular conductor by other authors. In this paper we consider the response due to a thin plane conductor of arbitrary shape. The method involves the numerical generation of a set of body-fitted orthogonal curvilinear coordinates which maps the conductor onto a unit square. Good orthogonal grids can be generated for shapes that do not deviate too far from the rectangular. In terms of these curvilinear coordinates the vector potential for the area current density satisfies an integro-differential equation which is solved numerically.

We consider here pulsatile flow in circular tubes of varying cross-section with permeable walls. The fluid exchange across the wall is accounted for by prescribing the normal velocity of the fluid at the wall. A perturbation analysis has been carried out for low Reynolds number flows and for small amplitudes of oscillation. It has been observed that the magnitude of the wall shear stress and the pressure drop decrease as the suction velocity increases. Further, as the Reynolds number is increased, the magnitude of wall shear stress increases in the convergent portion and decreases in the divergent portion of a constricted tube.

An approximate solution is determined for the problem of scattering of water waves by a nearly vertical plate, by reducing it to two mixed boundary-value problems (BVP) for Laplace's equation, using perturbation techniques. While the solution of one of these BVP is well-known, the other BVPs is reduced to the problem of solving two uncoupled problems, and the complete solution of the problem under consideration up to first-order accuracy is derived with a special assumption on the shape of the plate and a related approximation. Known results involving the reflection and transmission coefficients are reproduced.

The bi-objective Cost-time Trade-off Three Axial Sums' Transportation Problem is shown to be equivalent to a single-objective standard Three Axial Sums' problem, which can be solved easily by the existing efficient methods. The equivalence is established for some specially defined solutions termed as Lexicographic optimal solutions with minimum pipe-line.

We wish to correct a minor error in the recent paper [2]. That paper was concerned with an integral equation defined on a closed polygon Γ with r corners at the points x0, x2, …, x2r = x0. This paper deals with the complete constitutive relations of elastoplastic deformation process theory, based on llyushin's postulate of isotropy and hypotheses of local determinancy and complanarity in plastic stage with complex loading. The formulation of the boundary value problem is given and existence and uniqueness theorems are considered.
