A new sharp L2 inequality of Ostrowski type is established, which provides some other interesting results as special cases. Applications in numerical integration are also given.

Two generalised shallow-shell bending elements are developed for the analysis of doubly-curved shallow shells having arbitrarily shaped plan-forms. Although both elements are formulated using the concept of iso-deflection contour lines, one element uses the three displacement components U, V and W as the basic unknowns, while the displacement component W and the stress function ф serve as the unknowns in the other element. A number of illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the accuracy and relative convergence of the proposed shallow-shell elements when employed for static analysis purposes.

Connections between a linear partial difference equation with constant coefficients and a nonlinear partial difference equation are established by means of a comparison theorem and a continuous dependence of parameters theorem. A linearized oscillation theorem is also established as an application.

An efficient probabilistic algorithm is presented for the determination of the rate matrix of a block-GI/M/1 Markov chain. Recurrence of the chain is not assumed.

This paper examines the role of import tariffs and consumption taxes when a product is supplied to a domestic market by a foreign monopoly via a subsidiary. It is assumed that there is no competition in the domestic market from internal suppliers. The home country is able to levy a profits tax on the subsidiary; the objective of our analysis is to determine the levels of tariff or consumption tax which maximise national welfare. Comparisons are made under the two alternative policies from the perspectives of national welfare, total national cost and average national cost. The major policy implication of the analysis is that a consumption tax is the more effective instrument for maximising national welfare provided the profits tax is less than a certain critical value; if the profits tax exceeds this value then a tariff, though in the form of a subsidy, is the most effective instrument. Our results complement, correct and extend an earlier analysis by Katrak (1977) [6].

The inverse spectral method for a general N × N spectral problem for solving nonlinear evolution equations in one spacial and one temporal dimension is extended to include multi-boundary jumps and high-order poles and their explicit representations. It therefore provides a formalism to generate soliton solutions that correspond to higher-order poles of the spectral data.

The generalised elliptic-type integral Rμ(k, α, γ)

where 0 ≤ k < 1, Re(γ) > Re(α) > 0, Re(μ) ≥ −0.5, is represented in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function by Kalla, Conde and Hubbell [8]. In 1987, Kalla, Lubner and Hubbell derived a simple-structured single-term approximation for this function in the neighbourhood of k2 = 1 in some range of the parameters α, γ and μ. Another formula which complements the parameter range was recently derived by the author. In this paper a novel technique is used in deriving multiple-term efficient approximations (in the neighbourhood of k2 = 1) which may be considered as a generalisation to the concept of the single-term approximations mentioned above. Two non-overlapping expressions which almost cover the entire range of parameters (α, γ, μ) are derived. Closed-form solutions are obtained for single- and double-term approximations (in the neighbourhood of k2 = 1). Results show that the proposed technique is superior to existing approximations for the same number of terms. Our formulation has potential application for a wide class of special functions.

In this paper, multigrid methods for solving the biharmonic equation using some nonconforming plate elements are considered. An average algorithm is applied to define the transfer operator. A general analysis of convergence is given.

In this note we consider various theoretical aspects of the problem of least-squares approximation subject to constraints on the range of the approximating polynomial. The problem is treated from an optimization theory viewpoint. Rice's parameter space procedure is discussed.

This paper gives an approximate solution to the Wiener-Hopf integral equation for filtering fractional Riesz-Bessel motion. This is obtained by showing that the corresponding covariance operator of the integral equation is a continuous isomorphism between appropriate fractional Sobolev spaces. The proof relies on properties of the Riesz and Bessel potentials and the theory of fractional Sobolev spaces.

A one-sided one-dimensional random walk with repulsion from the origin is solved exactly. The walk imitates the self-avoiding walk problem insofar as the mean end-to-end distance of an n-step walk tends asymptotically to n as n tends to infinity.

Complementary variational principles are presented for a class of nonlinear boundary value problems S* Sφ = g(φ) in which g is not necessarily monotone. The results are illustrated by two examples, accurate variational solutions being obtained in both cases.

Nonlinear hydromagnetic convection in a horizontal layer of fluid rotating about the vertical axis is investigated using the mean field approximation. The boundary layer method is used assuming large Rayleigh number R for different ranges of the Chandrasekhar number Q and the Taylor number Ta. The heat flux F is determined for the value of the horizontal wave number α which maximizes F. It is shown that, for certain regions of the parameter space (R, Q, Ta), F and α change discontinuously for Ta greater than some critical value (given R and Q). Thus, for Ta about this critical value, wave numbers and heat fluxes of two different values will be predicted simultaneously. Also, for certian regions of the parameter space, the field can facilitate convection, but rotation can facilitate convection only for sufficiently large Ta.

The Sherman–Morrison formula is one scheme for computing the approximate inverse preconditioner of a large linear system of equations. However, parallelizing a preconditioning approach is not straightforward as it is necessary to include a sequential process in the matrix factorization. In this paper, we propose a formula that improves the performance of the Sherman–Morrison preconditioner by partially parallelizing the matrix factorization. This study shows that our parallel technique implemented on a PC cluster system of eight processing elements significantly reduces the computational time for the matrix factorization compared with the time taken by a single processor. Our study has also verified that the Sherman–Morrison preconditioner performs better than ILU or MR preconditioners.

Planar hinged segmented bodies have been used to represent models of biomechanical systems. One characteristic of a segmented body moving under gravitational acceleration and torques between segments is the possibility that the body's segments spin through more than a revolution or past a natural limit, and a computational mechanism to stop such behaviour should be provided. This could be done by introducing angle constraints between segments, and computational models utilising optimal control are studied here. Three models to maintain angle constraints between segments are proposed and compared. These models are: all-time angle constraints, a restoring torque in the state equations and an exponential penalty model. The models are applied to a 2-D three-segment body to test the behaviour of each model when optimising torques to minimise an objective. The optimisation is run to find torques so that the end effector of the body follows the trajectory of a half-circle. The result shows the behaviour of each model in maintaining the angle constraints. The all-time constraints case exhibits a behaviour of not allowing torques (at a solution) which makes segments move past the constraints, while the other two show a flexibility in handling the angle constraints which is more similar to what occurs in a real biomechanical system.

Taylor's model of dispersion simply describes the long-term spread of material along a pipe, channel or river. However, often we need multi-mode models to resolve finer details in space and time. Here we construct zonal models of dispersion via the new principle of matching their long-term evolution with that of the original problem. Using centre manifold techniques this is done straightforwardly and systematically. Furthermore, this approach provides correct initial and boundary conditions for the zonal models. We expect the proposed principle of matched centre manifold evolution to be useful in a wide range of modelling problems.

We prove the existence of solutions of Maxwell's equations for a conducting medium whose constitutive parameters are piecewise constant on R3, and then examine the convergence of these solutions in the quasi-static limit in which displacement currents are neglected. Secondly, we examine the regularity of the limiting solution and the sense in which the classical boundary conditions hold, namely, continuity of the tangential electric field and the normal current density.

We study the existence of the invariant region for the equations of nonisentropic gas dynamics. We obtain the mean-integral of the conserved quantity after making an intensive study of the Riemann problem. Using the extremum principle and the Lagrangian multiplier method, we prove that the one-dimensional equations of nonisentropic gas dynamics for an ideal gas possess a unique invariant region. However, the invariant region is not bounded.

We provide a qualitative analysis of a system of nonlinear differential equations that model the spread of alcoholism through a population. Alcoholism is viewed as an infectious disease and the model treats it within a sir framework. The model exhibits two generic types of steady-state diagram. The first of these is qualitatively the same as the steady-state diagram in the standard sir model. The second exhibits a backwards transcritical bifurcation. As a consequence of this, there is a region of bistability in which a population of problem drinkers can be sustained, even when the reproduction number is less than one. We obtain a succinct formula for this scenario when the transition between these two cases occurs.

We consider the stability of high Reynolds number flow past a heated, curved wall. The influence of both buoyancy and curvature, with the appropriate sense, can render a flow unstable to longitudinal vortices. However, conversely each mechanism can make a flow more stable; as with a stable stratification or a convex curvature. This is partially due to their influence on the basic flow and also due to additional terms in the stability equations. In fact the presence of buoyancy in combination with an appropriate local wall gradient can actually increase the wall shear and these effects can lead to supervelocities and the promotion of a wall jet. This leads to the interesting discovery that the flow can be unstable for both concave and convex curvatures. Furthermore, it is possible to observe sustained vortex growth in stably stratified boundary layers over convexly curved walls. The evolution of the modes is considered in both the linear and nonlinear régimes.
