These Horns, as they are improperly called, being certainly the teeth of some very large sea fish, represented in the annexed plate, were given by King Henry I, to the Prior and Convent of Carlisle, when he enfeoffed them with the tythes of all assart lands within the forest of Englewood, to be held per quoddam cornu eburneum, as expressed in the following record. In like manner the keepership of Bernwood forest, together with the manor of Borstal, in the county of Buckingham, were granted in see by King Edward the Confessor; and the manor of Pusey, Berks, by King Canute the Dane, by the delivery of hunting horns, both which are preserved at Pusey and Borstal at this day.

Following on the Norman Conquest, large estates in Cornwall and Devon were bestowed by William on Robert of Mortain, his half-brother, and on Judhel, one of his followers. Robert of Mortain received the earldom of Cornwall and large portions of both counties, holding 248 manors in Cornwall alone. His principal seat in Cornwall was at Launceston, though he had other castles in the county, including Trematon. Judhel, afterwards called Judhel of Totnes, also received estates in both counties, and became eventually one of the richest landowners in Devon. His principal castle was at Totnes. Another family—the Cardinans—only traditionally connected with the companions of the Conqueror, are found in the twelfth century in possession of considerable lands about Restormel, and held a castle there.

Among the Harleian MSS. in the British Museum, is preserved a highly curious volume, written at the commencement of the fourteenth century, containing a miscellaneous collection of pieces in verse and prose, apparently the production of an Irish Ecclesiastic, and chiefly of a satirical description. Most of these pieces are in English or Latin, and there is great reason to conclude that they are from the pen of Friar Michael Kyldare, who is expressly named as the author of a Ballad, fol. 10, and who is erroneously assigned by Ritson, in his Bibliographia Poetica, to the fifteenth, instead of the thirteenth and beginning of the succeeding century. But towards the close of this MS. (which, from the folios having been strangely misplaced, is very difficult to follow in the order of contents,) occurs an extremely interesting Poem, written in the ancient or Norman French language, contributing in a remarkable degree to throw illustration on the early topography and history of the town of New Ross, in Ireland, and on this account I trust the Society may not deem it unworthy of its being submitted to their notice.

The Society has lately had before it a fac-simile of the inscription on the coffin-plate of Gunilda, sister of King Harold, and in an accompanying letter, Mr. Beltz has remarked upon the errors into which historians have been led by transferring incidents in the life of one princess to another of the same name and age. I wish to draw attention to a similar mistake, and shall be able to show from a contemporaneous charter, that Adeliza, Countess of Au. male (Albemarle), wife of Count Odo of Champagne, has been confounded with her mother of the same name, and that she was the niece and not the sister of King William the Conqueror.

Having recently heard that the luxuriant hand of nature is already verifying my fears, as to the very site of a highly interesting Bath, in the island of Lipari, becoming disputable, I feel it a duty to forward, for the Society of Antiquaries, the Model of this edifice, which I referred to in my description of that Country.

I have the honour of sending your Lordship a Copy of Proceedings had in the Parliament of the Middle Temple, (for so a formal Meeting of the Benchers of that House for its business, is denominated,) respecting a Petition of Sir John Davies, praying that he might be restored to his degree of Barrister, and the enjoyment of his seat and commons in that capacity, all which he had forfeited under a judgment of theirs of nearly four years standing, on account of a gross outrage committed in their Hall at the time of public dinner.

The introductions which you kindly procured for me to the Authorities in Britany having enabled me, through the assistance of Mr. Vicars, a professional surveyor of Exeter, to complete a Plan of the Druidical Temple of Carnac, I have great pleasure in requesting you to lay it before the Society of Antiquaries, together with the following Observations on Dracontia. In these observations there is little of novelty; but I have adopted this method of introducing my remarks upon Carnac, because by it I can convey with greater ease and clearness my sentiments on the figure and dedication of this Sanctuary.

One of the strangest and best-known pictures in the National Portrait Gallery is that of Sir Henry Unton. He is depicted seated in a richly upholstered chair while around him there are grouped many extraordinary and wondrous scenes. We see him as a baby nursed by his mother; as a soldier accompanied by the panoply of war with tents, horse, armour, and attendant squires; on horseback, sun-shade in hand, riding through Italy, or escorted by trumpeters and servants into France. There are other scenes of banqueting, masquing, and revelry; but the mirth of festival gives way to counsel with learned divines and the solitude of study. There are also more sombre tableaux: a death-bed surrounded by weeping and praying ser-vants and a hearse draped in black being jogged through the bleak English countryside, while beggar women and children, the blind and lame, sit, grief-stricken, watching a gaunt procession of black-clad mourners. These are making their way towards a steepled church to the left, where a large congregation listens attentively to a sermon and before which there stands a splendid tomb, gaily tricked out in scarlet, black, and gold, on which there lies the recumbent effigy of a knight presided over by a lady attired in widow's weeds. All these relate in some way to the subject of the picture, Sir Henry Unton; in correct sequence they form a selective visual biography, and in this way the picture has value not only as a record of the sitter's features but as a unique historical document (pl. xxvi).

The dial forming the subject of this paper, acquired by the British Museum in 1923, is of gilt copper, made in the form of a book, along the edges of which are inscribed in capitals the words: Lucerna instrumentalis | intellectus directiva | sive instrumentum sciendi. The dial-plate which is fixed in the interior has a compass and two very short gnomons. It is for use in the latitudes of 42 and 45, and would serve for Rome and one of the large towns in the North Italian plain, perhaps Milan or Venice. It was made at Rome in the year 1593, as shown by the inscription on the dial-plate. On the cover is a shield of arms, barry, and in chief the letters I H S surmounted by a cross, a feature perhaps indicating that the owner was a member of the Society of Jesus; a fuller device, in which the three nails of the Passion are seen below the sacred monogram and cross, occupies the centre of the figure on the outside of the lower cover. The identification of the arms presents difficulties. They might be those of the Caraffa (gules, three bars argent), a member of which family, Vincenzio Caraffa, was general of the Jesuits in 1645.

A Note on the work done during 1930 by the Colchester Excavation Committee has already appeared in this Journal (vol. x, pp. 389–90), and on 12th March of this year, a joint paper, introduced by the Director of Excavations, Mr. J. P. Bushe-Fox, F.S.A., was laid before the Society of Antiquaries by the present writer and his colleagues in the field, Mr. M. R. Hull and Mr. J. N. L. Myres, F.S.A. Since then the Committee has resumed and finished one important part of its task: of the great Celtic site of Camulodunum, the portion to be occupied by the new Colchester By-pass road has now been fully explored from end to end. Mr. Hull, in accomplishing what remained from last year of this work between the middle of August and the 1st June (the limiting date arranged with the road authorities), has thus completed the saving of everything of value in this long strip of land from the destruction which the Committee was first formed to avert. Its responsibilities, however, do not end with this.

The major Early Bronze Age hoard from Arreton Down in the Isle of Wight was made known to the Society of Antiquaries as early as 1735. Until recently however, half of the hoard had remained unlocated since 1737, when it was drawn by Charles Frederick. His drawings, which appear in the Society's MS 265, have been instrumental in relocating five of the missing bronzes; four of these were found to have acquired false provenances. This paper traces as far as possible the varied histories of ownership of the Arreton bronzes and in conclusion draws some lessons from the problem of uncorroborated provenances. For the first time the whole of the known hoard is illustrated together.

In the year 1774, as some tinners were searching for tin in a stream-work near St. Austell, in the county of Cornwall, about 17 feet under the surface of the ground, they discovered a silver cup, which is now used for wine at the Communion Table, in which were several antient pieces of ornament, for a person of high rank, as represented in Pl. VIII. The cup was placed in a heap of loose stones, the refuse of an old tin-work, and covered with a common slate, where it was probably hid in troublesome times, either by the owner, or by some person who stole it. The quantity of earth and stone which had accumulated over the cup since it was deposited in the stream-work, shews that it had remained there for a great number of years. The cup was very thin and brittle, and fell into so many pieces as to prevent its being united. Besides the articles represented in the drawing, it contained many of the most curious Saxon coins ever discovered at one time. These with the other pieces of antiquity fell out in moving the ground, and some were probably lost in Shovelling about the rubbish. Those which were picked up were in a few hours disperst about the country, and many of them broken. The greatest part were afterwards collected; and are at Menabilly in Cornwall.

It is much to be regretted that the Surveys of the Religious Houses dissolved in the reign of King Henry the Eighth, preserved in the Augmentation Office and Chapter-House at Westminster, do not, in general, describe the state of the edifices themselves at that period with any degree of exactness. I have, however, found in the latter Repository, a survey of the Priory of Bridlington, in the East Riding of the County of York, which is not liable to this objection, and which, on that account, you may perhaps think deserving of being read to the Society of Antiquaries; for this purpose I beg leave to enclose a Transcript of it. The Survey is without date, but from its having the signature of Richard Pollard, who was one of the King's General Surveyors, the time of its being written may be fixed at about the thirty-second year of Henry VIIIth, immediately after the Dissolution. I will merely add, that the Priory of Bridlington was a Priory of Black Canons, of the Order of St. Austin, and that it was founded by Waiter de Gant, early in the reign of King Henry the First.

The town or settlement of ancient Aquae Sulis comprised an area of less than thirty acres. It was encircled on three sides by the river Avon, and almost surrounded by the lofty outliers of Cotswold and Mendip. The situation was an attractive one, and singularly appropriate for the important structures contained within the walled area. The baths occupied a central position in the town, and were in length at least one-third of its width from east to west.

The great medieval citadel of Damascus has not apparently received any serious notice in English; the important monographs, in French and German, which have been devoted to it are concerned principally with general architecture on the one part, and with epigraphy on the other. It is not intended in this article to deal further with these particular topics—indeed, the author is not qualified to do so—but to describe the citadel as a fortress and a monument of Islamic military art.
