Objectives: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is a multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) that is rapidly emerging as a life-threatening nosocomial disease in many countries. We sought to identify the risk factors associated with mortality for carriage of CRE in patients at a tertiary-care teaching hospital. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted between January 2020 to December 2021 in a tertiary-care teaching healthcare facility, University Malaya Medical Centre in Malaysia. The study included all inpatients aged ≥18 years who had a CRE infection or were colonized during the study period. The genotype was identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Statistical analysis of data including a multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted using SPSS version 23.0 software. Results: In total, 176 cases of CRE (130 infection and 46 colonized) were identified, and the mortality rate was 31.8%. The main sources of CRE were rectal swab (61.9%), blood (11.9%), and respiratory sources (11.9%). Klebsiella pneumoniae (55.7%) was the predominant species, followed by Escherichia coli (21.6%). Among the isolates, 17.7% were non–CPE-CRE and 82.3% were CPE-CRE: NDM (69.3%) and OXA (10.8%). In multivariate analysis, the factors associated with mortality were older age (OR, 1.040; 95% CI, 1.012–1.069), longer length of stay (OR, 0.974; 95% CI, 0.955–0.994), use of central venous catheter (OR, 0.287; 95% CI, 0.094–0.878), and arterial lines (OR, 0.292; 95% CI, 0.095–0.891). Conclusion: Patients with CRE had a high mortality rate. Older age, longer duration of stay, indwelling CVC and arterial line were independent risk factors for death. Infection prevention and control measures to reduce CRE, such as active surveillance, contact precautions, compliance to intravenous catheter care bundles, healthcare worker education, and hand hygiene adherence, should be implemented.

Background: Nationally, a decrease in total antibiotic use in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic was observed with an increase in select agents used for respiratory infections. Currently there is minimal data on antibiotic use in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Tennessee. To address this issue, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) developed a monthly point-prevalence survey of antibiotic use. Utilizing this tool, we sought to determine the effect the pandemic had on antibiotic use in Tennessee LTCFs. Method: We developed a REDCap questionnaire to collect information on selected antibiotics administered in Tennessee LTCFs. Antibiotic use percentage was determined by dividing the number of residents who received an antibiotic on the day of survey by facilities’ average censuses. Data were divided into a prepandemic period (January 2019–February 2020) and a period during the pandemic (March 2020–December 2021). Antibiotic prescriptions were grouped into 4 classes according to their most common uses: Clostridium difficile infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs), and respiratory infections. Average percentage of residents on antibiotics were compared between study periods. Results: In total, 37 facilities participated in the survey during the prepandemic period and 32 facilities participated during the pandemic period; 14 participated during both periods. The average percentage of residents on antimicrobials before the pandemic was 16.3%, which decreased to 11.5% during the pandemic period (P = .04). During the prepandemic period, 40.2% of antibiotics prescribed were in the common for SSTI category and 38.3% were in the common for respiratory infections category (P = .01); during the pandemic period, 64.3% of antibiotics prescribed were in the common for SSTI category and 45.8% were in the common for respiratory infections category (P = .01). The 3 most prescribed antibiotics in the prepandemic period were amoxicillin (148 prescriptions), doxycycline (140 prescriptions), and levofloxacin (135 prescriptions). The 3 most prescribed antibiotics during the pandemic were doxycycline (141 prescriptions), levofloxacin (125 prescriptions), and trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole (115 prescriptions). Conclusions: Survey results revealed that antibiotic prescriptions commonly used for respiratory infections increased 7.5% during the pandemic study period. Additionally, the average percentage of residents on antimicrobials fell 4.8% during this period. Both statistics reflect what has been seen nationally with a decrease in antibiotic use with an increase in respiratory antibiotics. This could be due to multiple factors including decreased reporting, a change in healthcare delivery during the pandemic, and facilities seeing an increase of respiratory tract infections. These data will be used to guide future TDH antibiotic stewardship efforts in the long-term care setting.

The standardized antibiotic administration ratio (SAAR) enables comparison of antibiotic use (AU) within and between hospitals and identifies target locations and antimicrobials for stewardship interventions. Thousands of institutions have already been submitting AU to the National Healthcare Safety Network. We highlight the benefits and meaningful utilization of SAAR in conjunction with antimicrobial stewardship interventions to improve antimicrobial prescribing in the clinical setting.

Background: Although many infectious conditions can be safely treated with oral antimicrobials, select circumstances require parenteral antimicrobial therapy. Benefits of OPAT include prevention of hospital-associated conditions and significant cost savings. However, risks of OPAT include adverse drug events (ADEs) and vascular access device (VAD) complications. We analyzed the safety of OPAT regimens as part of implementing a collaborative OPAT program. Methods: We reviewed adult patients discharged home from an academic hospital between January 2019 and June 2021. Patients with cystic fibrosis were excluded. Data on OPAT agents, ADEs, and VAD complications were collected from electronic medical records by 2 reviewers using a standardized REDCap instrument. The institutional review board approved this study. Results: The cohort comprised 265 unique patients; 212 (80%) received single-drug therapy and 53 (20%) received multidrug therapy. In total, 81 patients (31%), who received a total of 110 antimicrobials, experienced an ADE. In total, 55 patients (21%), who received a total of 72 antimicrobials, experienced a VAD complication. Patients who received >1 antimicrobial were more likely to experience an ADE (53% vs 25%; P = .0002) or a VAD complication (32% vs 18%; P = .04). Cephalosporins were the most frequently prescribed antimicrobial class (Table 1). Conclusions: ADEs and VAD complications were frequent in patients on OPAT. Local data should inform (1) the selection of OPAT therapy and (2) the standardized monitoring of patients who receive OPAT going forward in the implementation of this collaborative OPAT program.

Background: Wastewater drains in hospital patient rooms have been identified as environmental reservoirs for multidrug-resistant organisms, and they have been linked to outbreaks of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). We studied the colonization of wastewater drains in a new hospital bed tower. Methods: A patient care unit in a new bed tower opened on July 18, 2020. In-room sinks were located in each hospital room opposite the patient head wall. Patients admitted to this unit underwent weekly rectal cultures to survey for carbapenemase-producing CRE. Additionally, infection preventionists performed routine surveillance of all clinical cultures for CRE. Cultures were performed from all patient room sinks in this unit monthly beginning September 14, 2020. Samples were obtained from the drain cover, handles, and top of bowl using sponges soaked in neutralizing buffer and processed using the stomacher technique. The tail-pipe was sampled using a flocked mini-tip swab soaked in neutralizing buffer; the P-trap water was sampled with sterile tubing attached to a 50-mL syringe. All samples were plated on HARDYCHROM-ESBL and KPC Colorex media and were incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. Results: The first identified CRE-positive patient was admitted to the new unit on December 4, 2020; urine culture obtained at the time of admission grew KPC–producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-KP). The sink in this patient’s room had been sampled 3 prior times (most recently on November 9, 2020) and was negative for CRE. On December 7, 2020, KPC-KP was found on the drain cover (6,750 colony-forming units, CFU) and in the sink’s P-trap (1,840 CFU) of the index patient’s room during routine sink surveillance. Additional samples from other room surfaces were taken on December 9, 2020, and KPC-KP was recovered from the computer keyboard (452 CFU) and patient bedrails (880 CFU). The patient was discharged from this room December 13, 2020, and the room underwent enhanced terminal room cleaning including UV-C light. On the next routine sink sampling on January 4, 2021, KPC-KP was recovered again in the index room sink P-trap (9,800 CFU) but at no additional sites. MLST was performed, and all isolates were ST-258. Conclusions: In a new bed tower with no prior evidence of CRE-positive patients, the first identified case of a CRE (KPC-KP) in a patient resulted in widespread environmental contamination of the room after only 3 days of hospitalization and contamination of the in-room sink drain that persisted after 1 month. Given the ease with which CRE colonizes wastewater drains, new strategies are needed to mitigate drain colonization and to prevent CRE transmission to subsequent patients.

Background: Clinical antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) interpretations based on minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) breakpoints are important for both clinical decision making and some reportable condition criteria. Standardization of MIC breakpoints across clinical laboratories is lacking; AST instruments are often validated for outdated Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) MIC breakpoint guidelines. In this study, we analyzed the agreement between the reported clinical laboratory AST interpretations and the guideline CLSI interpretation. Methods: Clinical laboratory AST data collected from the Multisite Gram-Negative Surveillance Initiative (MuGSI) carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) surveillance program in Tennessee between 2019 and 2021 were utilized. MIC values from the clinical instrument were used to calculate CLSI standard interpretations following the 2019–2021 CLSI M100 guidelines. Agreement between the clinical laboratory and CLSI interpretations of the reported MIC values were measured using a weighted Cohen κ calculated in SAS version 9.4 software. Total matches were isolates with identical CLSI and clinical laboratory interpretations. Results: In total, 14 antibiotics were assessed. Of those, 9 antibiotics had at least moderate agreement (κ > 0.41) between interpretations. Agreement between the clinical laboratory and the CLSI interpretations were near perfect (κ > 0.81) for 3 antibiotics. Agreement between the clinical laboratory and the CLSI interpretations were poor for cefazolin (0.06) and ertapenem (0.14). Cefotaxime (−0.07) was the only antibiotic that suggested no agreement. Conclusions: Of the antibiotics included in the analysis, 36% had less than moderate agreement between clinical laboratory and CLSI AST interpretations. Given the increases in antimicrobial resistance globally and the emphasis placed on antibiotic stewardship, standardization across clinical AST panels should be prioritized. Inconsistencies have the potential to contribute to inappropriate antibiotic use in addition to under- or overidentification of reportable conditions, including CRE.

Using point-prevalence methodology and the World Health Organization (WHO) Access, Watch, and Reserve Classification, we measured antibiotic use in 5 hospitals in Okinawa, Japan, on October 1, 2020. Overall, 29% of patients were prescribed an antibiotic on the survey date and the 3 most used antibiotics in the “Watch” category were cefazolin, ampicillin-sulbactam, and ampicillin.

Background: Blood culture is a crucial diagnostic tool for healthcare systems, but false-positive results drain clinical resources, imperil patients with an increased length of stay (and associated hospital-acquired infection risk), and undermine global health initiatives when broad-spectrum antibiotics are administered unnecessarily. Considering emerging technologies that mitigate human error factors, we questioned historically acceptable rates of blood culture contamination, which prompted a need to promote and trial these technologies further. In a 3-month trial, 3 emergency departments in a midwestern healthcare system utilized an initial specimen diversion device (ISDD) to draw blood cultures to bring their blood culture contamination rate (4.4% prior to intervention) below the 3% benchmark recommended by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute. Methods: All emergency department nursing staff received operational training on the ISDD for blood culture sample acquisition. From June through August 2019, 1,847 blood cultures were drawn via the ISDD, and 862 were drawn via the standard method. Results: In total, 16 contamination events occurred when utilizing the ISDD (0.9%) and 37 contamination events occurred when utilizing the standard method (4.3%). ISDD utilization resulted in an 80% reduction in blood culture contamination from the rate of 4.4% rate held prior to intervention. Conclusions: A midwestern healthcare system experienced a dramatic reduction in blood culture contamination across 3 emergency departments while pilot testing an ISDD, conserving laboratory and therapeutic resources while minimizing patient exposure to unnecessary risks and procedures. If the results obtained here were sustained and the ISDD utilized for all blood culture draws, nearly 400 contamination events could be avoided annually in this system. Reducing unnecessary antibiotic use in this manner will lower rates of associated adverse events such as acute kidney injury and allergic reaction, which are possible topics for further investigation. The COVID-19 pandemic has recently highlighted both the importance of keeping hospital beds available and the rampant carelessness with which broad-spectrum antibiotics are administered (escalating the threat posed by multidrug-resistant organisms). As more ambitious healthcare benchmarks become attainable, promoting and adhering to higher standards for patient care will be critical to furthering an antimicrobial stewardship agenda and to reducing treatment inequity in the field.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic negatively affected antimicrobial stewardship programs at hospitals throughout Japan by diverting resources toward managing the pandemic. However, antimicrobial stewardship needs to continue regardless of hospital size or supervening crises. Herein, we discuss the impact of COVID-19 on antimicrobial stewardship at a small, local hospital in Japan.

Background: Inappropriate broad-spectrum antibiotic use targeting methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa can result in increased adverse events, antibiotic resistance, and Clostridioides difficile infection. In 2019, revised ATS/IDSA community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) guidelines removed healthcare-associated pneumonia (HCAP) as a clinical entity and modified patient factors warranting empiric broad-spectrum antibiotic (BSA) use. As a result, most patients hospitalized with CAP should receive empiric antibiotics targeting standard CAP pathogens. Based on revised guidelines, we evaluated predictors and outcomes associated with inappropriate BSA use among hospitalized patients with CAP. Methods: Between November 2019 and July 2022, trained abstractors collected data on non-ICU adult medical patients admitted with CAP at 67 Michigan hospitals who received either an inappropriate empiric BSA on hospital day 1 or 2 or a standard CAP regimen. Inappropriate empiric BSA use was defined as use of an anti-MRSA or anti-pseudomonal antibiotic in a patient eligible for standard CAP coverage per IDSA guidelines. Patients with immune compromise, moderate or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary complication, or guideline-concordant treatment with BSA were excluded. Data collected included comorbidities, antibiotic use and hospitalizations in the preceding 90 days, cultures in the preceding year, signs or symptoms of pneumonia, hospital characteristics, and 30-day postdischarge patient outcomes. Data were collected through chart review and patient phone calls. Predictors of inappropriate empiric BSA were evaluated using logistic general estimating equation (GEE) models, accounting for hospital-level clustering. We assessed the effect of inappropriate empiric BSA (vs standard CAP therapy) on 30-day patient outcomes using logistic GEE models controlling for predictors associated with the outcome and probability of treatment. Results: Of 8,286 included patients with CAP, 2,215 (26.7%) were empirically treated with inappropriate BSA. The median BSA treatment was 3 days (IQR, 2.5). After adjustments, factors associated with inappropriate empiric BSA treatment included hospitalization or treatment with high-risk antibiotics in preceding 90 days, transfer from a postacute care facility, hemodialysis, support with ≥3 L supplemental oxygen, severe sepsis, leukocytosis, and higher pneumonia severity index (Fig. 1). After adjustments, patients with inappropriate empiric BSA treatment had higher readmissions 30 days after discharge, more transfers to the intensive care unit, more antibiotic-associated adverse events, and longer hospitalizations (Fig. 2). Conclusions: Patients hospitalized with CAP often received inappropriate BSA as empiric coverage, and this inappropriate antibiotic selection was associated with worse patient outcomes. To improve patient outcomes, stewardship efforts should focus on reducing inappropriate BSA use in patients hospitalized for CAP with historic HCAP risk factors or severe CAP without other guideline-directed indications for BSA.

We surveyed healthcare professionals at a cancer center regarding their knowledge and perceptions of antibiotic use. Most knew the term “antimicrobial stewardship.” Nurses and other staff were less likely than pharmacists or providers to answer knowledge-based questions correctly. Opportunities exist to improve antibiotic knowledge among cancer center staff.

Background: Candida auris is a frequently drug-resistant yeast that can cause invasive disease and is easily transmitted in healthcare settings. Pediatric cases are rare in the United States, with <10 reported before 2022. In August 2021, the first C. auris case in Las Vegas was identified in an adult. By May 2022, 117 cases were identified across 16 healthcare facilities, including 3 pediatric cases at an acute-care hospital (ACH) with adult cases, representing the first pediatric cluster in the United States. The CDC and Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (NVDPBH) sought to describe these cases and risk factors for C. auris acquisition. Methods: We defined a case as a patient’s first positive C. auris specimen. We reviewed medical records and infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. Environmental sampling was conducted on high-touch surfaces throughout affected adult and pediatric units. Isolate relatedness was assessed using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Results: All 3 pediatric patients were born at the facility and had congenital heart defects. All were aged <6 months when they developed C. auris bloodstream infections; 2 developed C. auris endocarditis. One patient died. Patients overlapped in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit; 2 did not leave between birth and C. auris infection. Mobile medical equipment was shared between adult and pediatric patients; lapses in cleaning and disinfection of shared mobile medical equipment and environmental surfaces were observed, presenting opportunities for transmission. Overall, 32 environmental samples were collected, and C. auris was isolated from 2 specimens from an adult unit without current cases. One was a composite sample from an adult patient’s bed handles, railings, tray table and call buttons, and the second was from an adult lift-assistance device. WGS of specimens from adult and pediatric cases and environmental isolates were in the same genetic cluster, with 2–10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) different, supporting within-hospital transmission. The pediatric cases varied by 0–3 SNPs; at least 2 were highly related. Conclusions: C. auris was likely introduced to the pediatric population from adults via inadequately cleaned and disinfected mobile medical equipment. We made recommendations to ensure adequate cleaning and disinfection and implement monitoring and audits. No pediatric cases have been identified since. This investigation demonstrates transmission can occur between unrelated units and populations and that robust infection prevention and control practices throughout the facility are critical for reducing C. auris environmental burden and limiting transmission, including to previously unaffected vulnerable populations, like children.

Background: Nasal decolonization significantly decreases the incidence of Staphylococcus aureus surgical-site infections (SSIs). Patient adherence with self-administration of a decolonization ointment (ie, mupirocin) is low, especially among patients having urgent surgery. Povidone-iodine decolonization may overcome patient adherence challenges because povidone-iodine needs to be applied only on the day of surgery. We assessed the effectiveness and acceptability of povidone-iodine decolonization given on the day of surgery among patients having orthopedic trauma surgery. Methods: Adult patients who underwent operative fixation of traumatic lower extremity fractures were consented to receive 10% intranasal povidone-iodine solution. Povidone-iodine was applied ~1 hour before surgical incision and was reapplied the evening after surgery. Patients were tested for S. aureus nasal colonization before surgery, the evening after surgery (before povidone-iodine reapplication), and the day after surgery. Swabs were inoculated into Dey-Engley neutralizer and processed in a vortexer. A series of dilutions were performed and plated on mannitol salt agar plates. S. aureus cultures were quantitatively assessed to determine the reduction in S. aureus after povidone-iodine use. Reductions in S. aureus nasal growth were evaluated using the Skillings-Mack test. SSIs manifesting within 30 and 90 days of surgery were identified using NHSN definitions. A survey was administered the morning after surgery to determine the acceptability of intranasal povidone-iodine. Results: In total, 51 patients participated in this pilot study between February 2020 and June 2021. Nasal samples from 12 participants (23.5%) grew S. aureus. The S. aureus concentration decreased significantly across the time points (P = .03) (Fig. 1). No SSIs were identified within 30 days of surgery. One SSI occurred within 90 days of surgery; this patient did not carry S. aureus, and cultures from the infected site were negative. Also, 31% of patients reported at least 1 mild side effect while using povidone-iodine: dripping (n = 7), itching (n = 6), dryness (n = 4), stinging (n = 4), staining (n = 3), unpleasant taste (n = 3), runny nose (n = 2), burning (n = 1), sneezing (n = 1), sore throat (n = 1), tickling (n = 1), and/or cough (n = 1). Also, 86% of patients stated that povidone-iodine felt neutral, pleasant, or very pleasant, and only 14% stated that it felt unpleasant or very unpleasant. Discussion: In this pilot study, 2 applications of nasal povidone-iodine on the day of surgery were acceptable for patients, and this protocol significantly reduced S. aureus concentration in nares of patients. Future large clinical trials should evaluate whether this 2-application regimen of povidone-iodine significantly decreases rates of SSI among orthopedic trauma surgery patients.

Background: Antibiotics alone are often insufficient to treat recurrent C. difficile infection (rCDI) because they have no activity against C. difficile spores that germinate within a disrupted microbiome. SER-109, an investigational, oral, microbiome therapeutic comprised of purified Firmicutes spores, was designed to reduce rCDI through microbiome repair. We report an integrated efficacy analysis through week 24 for SER-109 from phase 3 studies, ECOSPOR III and ECOSPOR IV. Methods: ECOSPOR III was a randomized, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial conducted at 56 US or Canadian sites that included 182 participants with ≥2 CDI recurrences, confirmed via toxin EIA testing. Participants were stratified by age (<65 years or ≥65 years) and antibiotic regimen (vancomycin, fidaxomicin) and were randomized 1:1 to placebo or SER-109 groups. ECOSPOR IV was an open-label, single-arm study conducted at 72 US or Canadian sites including 263 participants with rCDI enrolled in 2 cohorts: (1) rollover participants from ECOSPOR III who experienced on-study recurrence diagnosed by toxin EIA (n = 29) and (2) participants with ≥1 CDI recurrence (diagnosed by PCR or toxin EIA), inclusive of the current episode (n = 234). In both studies, the investigational product was administered orally as 4 capsules over 3 consecutive days following symptom resolution after standard-of-care antibiotics. The primary efficacy end point was rCDI (recurrent toxin-positive diarrhea requiring treatment) through week 8. Other end points included CDI recurrence rates and safety through 24 weeks. Results: These 349 participants received at least 1 dose of SER-109 in ECOSPOR III or ECOSPOR IV (mean age 64.2; 68.8% female). Overall, 77 participants (22.1%) enrolled with their first CDI recurrence. Four participants received blinded SER-109 in ECOSPOR III followed by a second dose of open-label SER-109 in ECOSPOR IV. Overall, the proportion of participants who received any dose of SER-109 with rCDI at week 8 was 9.5% (33 of 349; 95% CI, 6.6 %–13.0%), and the CDI recurrence rate remained low through 24 weeks (15.2%, 53 of 349; 95% CI, 11.6%–19.4%), corresponding to sustained clinical response rates of 90.5% (95% CI, 87.0%–93.4%) and 84.8% (95% CI, 80.6%–88.4%), respectively (Fig. 1). Most rollover participants (25 of 29, 86.2%) were from the placebo arm; 13.8% had rCDI by week 8. Conclusions: In this integrated analysis, the rates of rCDI were low and durable in participants who received the investigational microbiome therapeutic SER-109, with sustained clinical response rates of 90.5% and 84.8% at weeks 8 and 24, respectively. These data further support the potential benefit of microbiome repair with SER-109 following antibiotics for rCDI to prevent recurrence in high-risk patients.

Background: COVID-19 has presented hospitals with unique challenges. An SHEA Research Network survey showed that 40% reported “limited” or worse levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) and that 13% were self-producing PPE to address those deficits, including 3D-printed items. However, we do not know how efficiently, if at all, 3D-printed materials can be disinfected. Additionally, 2 filaments, PLACTIVE and PUREMENT, claim to be antimicrobial; they use copper nanocomposites and silver ions to reduce bacterial populations. We assessed how PLACTIVE and PUREMENT may be contaminated and how well they reduce contamination, and how readily polylactic acid (PLA), a standard 3D-printed material, may be disinfected. Methods: We grew methicillin-resistant and -susceptible Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae on 3D-printed disks and conducted bacterial survival assays to determine whether bacteria grow on PLA, PLACTIVE, and PUREMENT. We performed a time series (with 3- and 24-hour dry times) followed by serial dilutions to attain colony-forming unit (CFU) averages for each strain per disk. To determine whether 3D-printed material can be cleaned, we used 70% EtOH on PLA only. We conducted the same time series followed by a disinfectant time series (with dry times 30 seconds, 2.5, minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes). Again, serial dilutions were performed to attain the PLA CFU averages with disinfectant. The CFU averages from the control group (PLA) and testing group (PLACTIVE and PUREMENT) were compared to see how well the antimicrobial material decreased bacterial load. We also compared the CFU averages of PLA with and without disinfectant to see how well 70% EtOH decreased bacterial load. Results: 3D-printed material is readily contaminated with bacteria common in hospitals and can sustain that contamination. Antimicrobial materials, PLACTIVE and PUREMENT, had lower levels of bacterial contamination when compared to PLA. However, disinfected disks had lower overall CFU averages than those that were not, but the level of disinfection was variable and bacterial populations recovered hours after disinfection application. Conclusions: Proper disinfection and using appropriate 3D-printed materials are essential to limiting bacterial contamination. 3D printers and their products can be invaluable for hospitals, especially when supplies are low and healthcare worker safety is paramount. Environmental services should be made aware of the presence of antimicrobial 3D-printed materials, and patients should be discouraged from printing their own items for use in hospital environments.
