Ross seals (Ommatophoca rossii) travel away from the pack ice and spend most of their year foraging pelagically. Here, we augment the few existing records of Ross seal diving and haul-out behaviour, providing novel insights into how these are influenced diurnally and seasonally. We used biologging devices that recorded the dive behaviour (n = 5) and/or haul-out behaviour (n = 9) of Ross seals in the eastern Weddell Sea (2016–2019). Ross seals mostly dived between 100 and 200 m deep, often > 300 m, and for 5–12 min in duration, often > 20 min. During March–July, when Ross seals forage pelagically, diving metrics varied diurnally. The seals dived deeper during twilight and shallowest at night, while the number of dives and diving duration did not follow a clear diurnal pattern. Consequently, diving effort was highest during the night. Ross seals preferentially hauled out in the middle of the day during September, October, February and December, but not during the rest of the year. Three females that entered the pack ice during breeding season were hauled out continuously for 5–7 days, punctuated by water entries for 1–3 h during and/or after such continuous haul-outs over the breeding season. This behaviour might suggest that Ross seals alternate between capital and facultative income breeding.

The Devonian, Pivot Coal Measures in southern Victoria Land are non-carbonaceous. The sequence contains bedding parallel, titaniferous ironstones up to 50 cm thick, but no coal or carbonaceous shale, the unit is consequently renamed Pivot Member of the Arena Sandstone. The more Fe-Ti oxide-rich (up to 40 modal %) beds appear black and coal-like with conchoidal fracture and closely spaced cleat-like fractures. The coal-like beds grade laterally and vertically into less altered sedimentary rocks in which fine bedding-parallel concentrations of Fe-Ti oxide pick-out parting surfaces on ripples and other sedimentary structures. Thin section petrography shows that the Fe-Ti oxide is replacive, and outcrop relationships show that the replacement was related to dolerite intrusion 200 million years after the sedimentary host was deposited. Replacement of muscovite, biotite and chlorite by Fe-Ti-oxide occurred at 179 ± 3 Ma, at pressures of 0.3–0.4 kbar and at temperatures as low as 380°C.

Two different methodologies are applied in order to quantify the eddy contribution to the heat flux across the Polar Front, between January 2006 and December 2009. First, the eddy fluxes are indirectly estimated through a heat balance based on geostrophic fluxes obtained from the Argo climatological temperature and salinity. Second, a parametric model based on sea level anomaly data from a merged satellite product is used to obtain a direct estimate of the eddy heat flux and its temporal and spatial variability. The results obtained through the heat balance (-80.5 ± 16.45 x 1013 W) and the parameterization (-56.2 ± 4.18 x 1013 W) are within the range established by previous studies. The eddy heat flux is observed to be concentrated in a few narrow regions, with a particularly large contribution from the Atlantic sector. A trend of intensification of the southward heat flux is observed in the study period (-0.44 x 1013 W year-1), compatible with recent modelling and observational studies.

A detailed stratigraphical, palaeoecological and geomorphological reconstruction of a fjord head on South Georgia (Husvik, Stromness Bay) is presented. Six sites were chosen to reconstruct the lithostratigraphy of the area by means of coring. A maximum depth of 11 m was attained and the sediments encountered vary from coarse gravel over sands to fine silts with, in some cases, intercalated peat layers. Diatom analysis allowed determination of whether the sedimentological units were deposited in a marine or freshwater environment. Six radiocarbon dates constrain the chronology. Deglaciation of the area was completed in the early Holocene and the postglacial geomorphological evolution of Husdal (unofficial name) was controlled by fluvio-deltaic deposition and sea level changes. Relative sea level rise was faster than, or kept pace with the isostatic rebound of the land. Our results challenge the presence of Late Glacial and Holocene raised beach deposits in the area as reported in earlier geomorphological studies.

Two new species of Paramunnidae (Crustacea, Isopoda, Asellota) from the South Shetland Islands (sub-Antarctic) are described. Austrosignum escandellae sp. nov. has long eyestalks, dorsum slightly sculpted (transverse bumps on pereonites 1–5), and lateral margins of pereonites rounded. The closest species is A. spinosum Kussakin, 1982 that also shows dorsum sculpted. The main differences are the ocular peduncle (short in A. spinosum) and the lateral margins of pereonites (pointed in A. spinosum). Coulmannia ramosae sp. nov. differs from the other two species of this genus (C. australis Hodgson, 1910 and C. frigida Hodgson, 1910) in that only the margins of pereonites 2–4 are expanded (into one point). A discussion of the Austrosignum/Munnogonium complex is provided with a comparative table of the species involved.

The current political regime for the Antarctic stemmed from the activities of the non-governmental International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) in planning and implementing the IGY (1957–58); subsequently the Antarctic Treaty came into force in 1961. The Treaty promotes freedom of scientific research and international co-operation and in the first two decades of its existence this was an undisputed priority. SCAR, a committee of ICSU, is a non-political organization, which initiates, promotes and co-ordinates scientific research in the Antarctic. SCAR has always attached the highest importance to environmental protection and for over thirty years has readily accepted an advisory role in relation to the Treaty System. One Convention (CCAS on seals) has a built-in advisory role for SCAR - an unusual, probably unique function for an NGO. Another (CCAMLR on marine resources) often seeks advice from SCAR. The success of the Antarctic Treaty System owes much to SCAR.

The sulphate ion (SO42-) is one of major species in freshwater as well as seawater, originating from various natural and anthropogenic processes (Krouse & Mayer 2000). Compared to the Northern Hemisphere, where human activities affect the sulphate concentration and isotopic signatures, the contribution of anthropogenic sulphate is likely to be negligible in freshwater and ice cores in the Antarctic region (Patris et al. 2002). This means that the sulphur and oxygen isotope compositions of the dissolved sulphate could hint at information on the sources, formation and deposition due to various natural processes and sulphur cycling in the Antarctic region, especially for the dissolved sulphate in surface waters such as ponds and creeks (Patris et al. 2000, Kim et al. 2017). Here we report the ion concentration and sulphur and oxygen isotope compositions of the dissolved sulphate in freshwater from King George Island in the Antarctic Peninsula, which provide implications regarding the sources of the dissolved sulphate and the sulphur cycling in the Antarctic region.

A cadmium (Cd)-binding protein was isolated and characterized from the Antarctic clam Laternula elliptica after experimental exposure to a high concentration of Cd. Cd-binding metallothioneins (MTs) in the cytosol were purified using a procedure based on gel permeation and ion-exchange chromatography. The purified MTs were recognized by MT antibodies in a Western blotting assay. MALDI-TOF MS analyses showed that the molecular mass of the purified MTs was 7.27 kDa, which is typical of MTs found in marine invertebrates. The Cd binding to MT, reflected by the redistribution of Cd ions, was monitored by spectrophotometry. The absorption spectra profiles indicated the presence of Cd-MT complexes, and a 4 nm red shift of the unresolved lowest energy-absorption band occurred when five equivalents of Cd (II) were incorporated.

Antarctica was once considered biologically isolated, surrounded by oceanic barriers (Fraser et al. 2018). However, floating materials such as kelp rafts (Fraser et al. 2018, Avila et al. 2020), wood (Lewis et al. 2005) and plastics (Avila et al. 2020) are now known to cross these barriers and reach Antarctic shores. Such incursions might enable non-native species (either rafting species themselves or associated hitchhikers) to colonize Antarctica as the climate warms (Avila et al. 2020, Fraser et al. 2020), but whether these species will be able to survive and reproduce in the Antarctic is not yet known. Sea ice is a defining characteristic of Antarctic coastlines, and modelled trajectories of kelp rafts (Fraser et al. 2018) cross-referenced against sea-ice observations (Parkinson 2019) suggest that collisions between rafts and seasonal sea ice occur frequently (Fig. 1a); thus, rafts are expected to be entrained in, on or under sea ice and experience multiple freeze-and-thaw cycles on their journeys to Antarctica. In addition, kelp rafts that reach the Antarctic intertidal will experience temperatures well below 0°C if exposed to the air at low tide. Freezing can cause severe disruptive stress to seaweeds, and ice crystals growing in intercellular spaces can damage cell membranes and cause cell lysis (Eggert 2012). Such damage could affect the buoyancy of kelp tissue and decrease rafting ability. Although some non-native kelp rafts recovered from Antarctic shores appeared to still be reproductively viable, with mature gametes observed in reproductive tissue (Fraser et al. 2018), tissue damage caused by freezing could have widespread effects on the health, function and establishment success of a non-native species traversing the Southern Ocean.

The Antarctic plunderfishes Artedidraco lönnbergi and A. skottsbergi are small, bottom dwelling species inhabiting the continental shelf of the High Antarctic Zone. During cruise 97–9 of the US RV Nathaniel Palmer during the summer in the south-western Ross Sea, samples of both species were collected by means of bottom trawling. On the basis of macroscopic and histological analysis, we present the first data on the reproductive characteristics of these two plunderfishes, including gametogenesis, spawning period and absolute fecundity. Histologically, we found immature (stage I and II) and mature (stage V) females in both species, whereas developing females (stage III) were found only in A. skottsbergi. All examined male specimens of A. skottsbergi were in the final stage of spermatogenesis (stage III), whereas male A. lönnbergi were immature (stage I), mature (stage IV) and post-reproductive (stage V) individuals. In both species, spawning takes place in summer during December and January. Absolute fecundity was very low, with less than 100 and 200 oocytes in A. lönnbergi and A. skottsbergi, respectively. These data are compared with those reported in literature for other artedidraconids.

Global human activities, such as greenhouse emissions and pollution, are promoting global warming, environmental changes and biodiversity reduction. Pristine environments such as those of Antarctica are not immune to these phenomena, as is noticeable from the increasing pace of the temperature shift registered within the continent in recent decades. In this study, we describe the first de novo transcriptome analysis of the endemic Antarctic springtail (= collembolan) Cryptopygus terranovus and we evaluate its global gene expression response following a mid-term exposure of 20 days to 18°C. Expression data are compared with wild specimens sampled from their native environment to outline the molecular mechanisms triggered by the thermal exposure. Although individual plasticity in transcript modulation is assessed, several pathways appear to be differentially modulated in springtails subjected to the heat treatment vs wild specimens. Through enrichment analysis, we show that protein catabolism, fatty acid metabolism and a sexual response characterized by spermatid development are induced, while carbohydrate consumption, lipid catabolism and tissue development are downregulated in treated samples compared to controls.

The waters along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) have experienced warming and increased freshwater inputs from melting sea ice and glaciers in recent decades. Challenges exist in understanding the consequences of these changes on the inorganic carbon system in this ecologically important and highly productive ecosystem. Distributions of dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), total alkalinity (AT) and nutrients revealed key physical, biological and biogeochemical controls of the calcium carbonate saturation state (Ωaragonite) in different water masses across the WAP shelf during the summer. Biological production in spring and summer dominated changes in surface water Ωaragonite (ΔΩaragonite up to +1.39; ~90%) relative to underlying Winter Water. Sea-ice and glacial meltwater constituted a minor source of AT that increased surface water Ωaragonite (ΔΩaragonite up to +0.07; ~13%). Remineralization of organic matter and an influx of carbon-rich brines led to cross-shelf decreases in Ωaragonite in Winter Water and Circumpolar Deep Water. A strong biological carbon pump over the shelf created Ωaragonite oversaturation in surface waters and suppression of Ωaragonite in subsurface waters. Undersaturation of aragonite occurred at < ~1000 m. Ongoing changes along the WAP will impact the biologically driven and meltwater-driven processes that influence the vulnerability of shelf waters to calcium carbonate undersaturation in the future.

Mucosal immunity of Indian Antarctic personnel was analysed during the 34th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (ISEA) by ship voyage. Serum and salivary IgA, IgA1 and IgA2 levels along with salivary cortisol and TGF-β were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Samples were collected at three different time points (T1, T2 and T3) during the expedition. Serum and salivary IgA, IgA1 and IgA2 concentrations incrementally increased towards the end of the expedition as compared to the beginning of the expedition. Salivary IgA and TGF-β levels were significantly altered during the expedition. Levels of IgA1 (P = 0.0007) and IgA2 (P = 0.0135) increased significantly at T3 as compared to T1. Additionally, significant changes in serum IgA were observed, with peak levels at T3 (P = 0.0015) and T2 (P < 0.001). However, the level of serum IgA2 was also significantly altered at T3 (P < 0.05) and T2 (P = 0.0006) in comparison with T1. The exact cause of the changes in serum and salivary IgA, IgA1, IgA2 and TGF-β levels during the summer expedition are unknown; however, the changes are evident in mucosal immunity.

A key element in Antarctic conservation over the past forty years has been area protection. In pursuit of this and the protection of continuing scientific investigations 59 protected areas have so far been agreed by the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings. Although both flora and fauna have been protected under this regime there has only been the habitat matrix devised by SCAR as a guide to selection of areas. What could we do to improve the process of identification and selection?

The Wilkes Subglacial Basin (WSB), the largest subglacial basin in East Antarctica, is a topographic depression of continental proportions that lies beneath the East Antarctic continental ice sheet. Discovered by the US Victoria Land Traverse 1959–60, the origin of the WSB and the influence of palaeoclimate on its overlying continental ice sheet have remained uncertain since the time of its discovery. Most explanations of origin favour lithospheric structural control as a function of tectonic activity. Lithospheric flexure due to thermally or isostatically induced uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains was suggested in the 1980s. Lithospheric extension and rifting was proposed in the 1990s. More recent investigations have revealed the presence of fold and thrust belts, casting doubt on flexural and extensional hypotheses as the primary mechanisms, suggesting instead a compressional scenario. While remaining inconclusive, these tectonic mechanisms in one form or another, or in combination, are now believed to have provided the structural control for the origin of the WSB. Not yet comprehensively examined, however, is the role of non-tectonic processes in the formation of the WSB, as they may have influenced the size, configuration, subglacial sedimentation and subglacial topography of the WSB. In this paper we review the tectonic hypotheses and examine post-tectonic climate change along with glacial and marine processes as potentially significant factors in the present condition and configuration of the WSB. In the process, we find that there are a number of features not included in previous investigations that may have been major factors in the modification of the subglacial basin.
