Dicte and the Temples of Dictaean Zeus

Published online by Cambridge University Press:  11 October 2013

Extract

This memorandum, written before 1910 by the late Professor R. C. Bosanquet, seems to have been intended as a historical introduction to the definitive report of the British School's excavations at Praisos and Palaikastro. Some sections have been revised by the Curator of Knossos, Mr. R. W. Hutchinson.

page 69 note 1 Steph. Byz. Στῆλαι, πόλις Κρήτης πλησίον Παραισοῦ καὶ ῾Ρυθίμνης Hoeck (Kreta I, 414) and others, including Mariani, have emended the last words into Πραισοῦ καὶ ῾Ρυτίου But the position of Rhytium is now fixed at Rotasi in the Messara. If I am right in placing Stalai near Cape Goudhouras, the Erythraeum of Ptolemy, we may read: πλησίον Πραισοῦ καὶ ᾿Ερυθραίου Another possible correction for ῾Ρυθίμνης would be ῾Ιεραπὑτνης

page 70 note 1 See the references to piracy in a treaty between Rhodes and Hierapytna dating probably from the end of the third century B.C. (Collitz-Bechtel 3749, Michel 21); and the complaint of the Hierapytnians, in a letter quoted by the Magnesian arbitrators, that a ship sailing from Leuke had committed some act of war in their territory; at this time Leuke seems to have been occupied by Praisians or Stalitai, and the Hierapytnians in lodging the complaint admitted the title of Itanos to the island. Sylloge 3, 686, 11. 122 ff. The treaty speaks of Hierapytna's ‘legitimate revenues from the sea.’ Rhodes is to help Hierapytna ‘against any king or dynast who may attack her,’ perhaps a reference to the Egyptian king's support of the claims of Itanos.

page 75 note 1 [Bosanquet translates ‘edge of the cliff’; I have given ‘crown’ because though στεφάνη like ‘crown of the hill,’ is an ordinary term I believe it to be here the local title of some particular crown; for the same reason I place ‘ridge’ and ‘hollow’ in inverted commas.—R.W.H.
