1. Le terme ath désigne un fléau envoyé par les dieux pour châtier le coupable d'un crime. Ce fléau prend généralement la forme d'un égarement passager qui, s'emparant du criminel, le conduit à provoquer sa propre perte. C'est que qu'on appelle traditionnellement l'« aveuglement tragique ». Pour Ruth Padel, cette « folie » archaïque laisse la place dans la tragédie à une conception nouvelle et bien plus moderne de la folie en tant que telle.
