La larve au dernier stade d'Ecdyonurus rothschildi Navás est figurée et décrite comparativement à celles d'E. aurantiacus (Burmeister) et d'E. dispar (Curtis).

The distribution of 37 species of Plecoptera in the Spanish area of the Duero basin is studied. A factorial analysis ofthe data indicates that current and substrate are the major factors controlling the distribution of the stonefly nymphsin the area. Water temperature and periodical drought have also a marked influence on such distributions.

Sublittoral and profundal chironomid community structure, depth distribution and relationship to the trophic level of the waters were investigated in Lake Vico (Central Italy) during 1985-1986. PCA analysis indicated a depth-dependent group of true profundal stations at 20, 30 and 40 m depths, characterized by Micropsectra, Procladius, Microtendipes, Tanytarsus and Paratendipes, and a group of 10 m stations, characterized by Cryptochironomus, Polypedilum bicrenatum gr., Cladopelma lateralis gr. and C. laccophila gr., representing the sublittoral features of this depth. In agreement with the chemical data, the chironomid community indicated a mesotrophic condition of Lake Vico, with a tendency towards an increasing trophic level in the deepest zone. A significant role in revealing future trophic changes in the lake may be attributed to the key-indicator Micropsectra.

Nitrogen stable isotope composition (δ15N) of particulate organic matter (POM) has been used to infer dominant nitrogen cycling processes in lakes. However, very few studies have compared the isotope variations in lakes along trophic state and other biogeochemical gradients. Here we report an analysis of δ15NPOM and selected environmental variables from 96 subtropical lakes to assess the patterns and controls of isotope variations. Results indicate that δ15NPOM values varied from −2.8 to 13.2‰ and were not significantly correlated with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN) and chlorophyll a (Chl a). The 15N depletion in POM was found across the entire trophic gradient and likely reflected contributions from planktonic nitrogen fixation. The 15N enrichment was attributed to high primary production and the contributions of anthropogenic wastes in eutrophic lakes, and the presence of microzooplankton in the water samples of the oligotrophic lakes. The δ15NPOM was negatively correlated with water color and positively correlated with pH. Because water color is indicative of light availability which affects phytoplankton growth and pH is significantly correlated with Chl a concentration in the study lakes, the close relationship between water color, pH and δ15NPOM therefore suggests primary productivity-driven isotope fractionation. Results from this study did not reveal the importance of trophic state, nitrogen concentration and surface area to the variations of δ15NPOM and points to the complex interactions of nitrogen cycling processes in lakes with diverse biogeochemical features.

An account is given of the chemistry and phytobenthos of streams in the vicinity of two old lead mines in the Hautes-Pyrénées south of Lourdes. All of the nine sites studied had elevated levels of aqueous Zn, and also in most cases of Cd and Pb. There was some evidence that increasing levels of heavy metals led to a decreased flora, but 30 species were recorded at sites with > 10 mg l-1 Zn. The most restricted flora occurred at a site with a conspicuous white precipitate, consisting largely of anglesite; here only three species were present: Schizothrix sp., Pohlia cruda, Solenostoma crenulatum.

L'étude de la dynamique saisonnière du phytoplancton dans le lac de Pareloup a été réalisée dans le cadre plus général de la mise en œuvre d'un modèle de fonctionnement de ce réservoir en vue de sa gestion. La biomasse (poids frais µg.l-1 et chlorophylle a) et la densité cellulaire ont été suivies de mars à novembre pendant deux années. Le maximum annuel de phytoplancton (biomasse et densité cellulaire) se situe au printemps ; il est dominé par les diatomées dont le déclin est initié par la carence en silice du milieu et, sans doute, par des concentrations cellulaires en chlorophylle a minimales. Une phase claire résulte de la sédimentation des diatomées et se prolonge pendant tout l'été. Cette période estivale se caractérise par une forte production primaire et une faible biomasse, biomasse régulée par la prédation. Avec le brassage automnal, de petites espèces connaissent une croissance rapide qui s'exprime seulement en densité cellulaire; la faible augmentation des valeurs de biomasse par rapport à celles de l'été est due essentiellement à la présence de Gonyostomum semen et au léger renouveau des diatomées. Les différentes phases du développement du phytoplancton sont analysées et confrontées au modèle P.E.G. proposé par Sommer et al. (1986). La mise en place de la stratification thermique est l'élément fondamental dans le fonctionnement du réservoir de Pareloup ; chaque année, elle détermine le départ d'une succession phytoplanctonique de type cyclique.

Un inventaire des Chironomidés de l'Oued Martil est effectué : 95 espèces ont été recensées dont 14 sont nouvellement citées pour le Maroc. Cet inventaire porte le total des espèces actuellement connues du Rif à 121 et celui du Maroc à 256. La majorité des espèces ont une large répartition paléarctique, 7 espèces ont distribution méditerranéenne ; 3 espèces sont afrotropicales et 2 espèces panpaléotropicales.

Changes in body shape of the rotifer Keratella quadrata in a pond were recorded over the course of half a year (endof November 1981 to beginning of June 1982). Body and caudal spine lengths increased from November until the endof February, and then decreased until June. Such changes were not significantly correlated consistently positively ornegatively to water temperature, pH, hardness, food levels or copepod numbers. The individuals present during the firsthalf of the study period corresponded most closely to the literature descriptions of the group or subspecies quadrata,while those present during the second half resembled the form, group or variety dispersa. The first half of the studyperiod was characterized by water of relatively low temperature, low pH and high hardness, while, for the second half, temperature and pH increased and hardness decreased.

Collections of ostracods from various habitats in and around Lake Inari, Finnish Lapland, provide the first record of these crustaceans from Finland north of the Arctic Circle. From a total of 35 sites visited, 14 species were collected, out of which four appeared to be new to Finland: Fabaeformiscandona lapponica, Pseudocandona pratensis, Eucypris pigra and Paralimnocythere relicta. Two major assemblage groups were recognised by clustering classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination, one dominated by Cyclocypris ovum, the second by Candona candida. Taxonomic diversity of the most assemblages was of expected range based on the inventory of 53 freshwater species of Finland.

Des investigations malacologiques ont été réalisées en 1974 et en 1994-1995 dans trois prairies de la Haute-Vienne afin depréciser les caractéristiques des gîtes à limnées lorsque les parcelles sont abandonnées ou modifiées par l'application de mesures agronomiques. L'abandon d'une prairie et l'invasion de ragondins se sont traduits par des modifications dans la distribution des limnées. Lymnaea cf. fuscus a déserté le fossé principal de drainage pour coloniser les rigoles et les couloirs créés par ces rongeurs,ce qui s'est traduit par un accroissement important de la superficie du nouveau gîte. Les effectifs moyens de L. cf. fuscus et de L. truncatula ont augmenté aux dépens de ceux de L. glabra. Un autre mollusque aquatique, Physa acuta, a envahi le fossé laissé libre. Le curage des rigoles dans les deux autres prairies et leur invasion par une ou deux espèces aquatiques (L. ovata, Potamopyrgus antipodarum ou Physa acuta) se sont traduits par une extension dans la superficie du gîte aussi bien pour les mollusques colonisateurs que pour L. glabra et L. truncatula. Les effectifs des trois premières espèces sont assez importants dans ces deux rigoles ; par contre, on note une réduction du nombre des deux limnées.

Les effets des rejets de matières organiques sur les Oligochètes du Bief Rouge se traduisent par le développement de trois espèces qui prolifèrent au détriment des autres Oligochètes : T. tubifex, N. elinguis, S. heringianus (et, dans une certaine mesure, N. communis). Par contre, ni L. hoffmeisteri ni L. udeke-mianus n'atteignent de densités élevées. Tout en soulignant l'utilité des Oligochètes en tant qu'indicateurs de la qualité des eaux, l'auteur montre que les associations d'espèces polluorésistantes peuvent varier suivant le type de cours d'eau envisagé et son degré de contamination.

The short-term stimulation of production, due to marine-derived nutrients (MDN) from spawning salmon, is well documented for certain trophic levels in stream communities (e.g., algae and insect biomass). The effect of these nutrients on the stream ecosystem as a whole, however, remains unclear especially later in the year. Trichopterans have been shown to feed on salmon and other fish carcasses and there is evidence for greater growth rates in the presence of salmon tissue. To address the question of long-term MDN subsidy on trichopterans, we investigated the growth of three limnephilid caddisflies in the spring in the Harris River on Prince of Wales Island, Southeast Alaska. The Harris River has a natural waterfall barrier to salmon and receives large runs of pink (O. gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon each fall. We selected two shredding caddisflies (Onocosmoecus unicolor) and (Psychoglypha spp.) and one facultative scraper, (Dicosmoecus atripes) for our study. We had two objectives : 1) compare the spring growth of larval caddisflies in a stream section that receives a large autumn run of salmon with their growth in a stream section that is blocked from receiving salmon (due to an impassable waterfall), and 2) compare the growth of shredders with that of a facultative scraper when provided either leaves or biofilm on rocks as food.

Insects were placed in growth boxes in May 2001 with either conditioned alder leaves or stream rocks as food sources. The boxes were placed along with temperature loggers in both the salmon (below the waterfall) and non-salmon (above the waterfall) reaches. The boxes were removed 40 days later. In-stream samples were taken of each caddisfly initially and at the end of the experiment to establish in-stream growth versus growth in the boxes. All larvae were coaxed from their cases, measured for total wet length, dried and weighed. Only D. atripes and Psychoglypha spp. were growing during our experiment and both showed very high relative growth rates in the Harris River. Psychoglypha spp. and O. unicolor were both significantly larger in the leaf boxes and D. atripes was significantly larger in the rock boxes. Both D. atripes and Psychoglypha spp. had significantly greater relative growth rates between food types (on biofilm on rocks and leaves respectively). These results support the notion that D. atripes are most likely facultative scrapers at least in their first year of growth. None of these caddisflies showed differences in their final mean weights or relative growth rates between stream sections, suggesting no effect of MDN on their spring growth in the Harris River. Further research on caddisfly communities in the fall and winter will help clarify if MDN has an influence on the abundance and life history of these species closer to the salmon run. This study questions the long-term influence of MDN on stream communities, particularly those populations that do most of their production in the spring, months after salmon carcasses are no longer visible.

The morphology and ecology of a†new species of the cyanophyte/cyanobacterial genus Aphanizomenon Morren ex Bornet etFlahault, A. slovenicum Rekar et Hindák, are described from Lake Bled, NW Slovenia. The species produced a heavy waterbloom in May - December 1997 but disappeared during 1998. Macroscopic flakes of bundles of trichomes similar to A. flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs ex Bornet et Flahault formed in a layer between 10 - 20 m depth. They differed from A. flos-aquae by shorter and narrow short cylindrical to barrel-shaped cells, and by trichomes that sometimes consisted of morphologically different cell sections. Maximum abundance was found in August : 655 trichomes.m1-1. Heterocytes were occasionally present and akinetes have been observed only in laboratory cultures. The main characteristics of the investigated cultures of A. slovenicum and A.flos-aquae isolated from a fishpond at Ledava (NE Slovenia) are given.

L'élevage de larves jusqu'à l'imago ([math]) a montré que la combinaison Choroterpes (Ch.) lindrothi Peters, 1980 doit êtreremplacée par Ch. (Euthraulus) lindrothi Peters, 1980, n. comb. et que Ch. (E.) mauritanicus Soldan et Thomas, 1983 en est synonyme (n. syn.).

L'imago ♀ et les subimagos d'Ecdyonurus rotschildi Navás sont décrits. L'imago c'est redécrit et figuré comparativement à E. aurantiacus (Burmeister).

Une série d'expérimentations a été réalisée afin de mesurer l'activité dénitrifiante liée aux biodermes périphytiquesse développant sur le lit de la Garonne. Cette activité et la production au sein des biodermes ont été mesurées in vitrodans des chambres photo-respiratoires.La dénitrification a été évaluée par l'accumulation de protoxyde d'azote (N2O) après l'inhibition de sa réduction parl'acétylène. Le N2O produit a été mesuré sur un chromatographe en phase gazeuse à détecteur à capture d'électrons.L'état du bioderme est caractérisé par les paramètres de biomasse, de pigments chlorophylliens et d'activité photosynthétiqueet respiratoire. La production de N2O liée aux biodermes est immédiate et linéaire. En présence de l'acétylèneet à l'obcurité, le taux horaire moyen de dénitrification atteint des valeurs de 423 µg N. g-1 M.O. h-1 dans les chambresanaérobies contre 203 µg N. g-1 M.O. h-1 dans les chambres aérées (7 mg O2 l-1). L'activité dénitrifiante est inhibée à99 % à la lumière et, en présence de l'acétylène, son taux ne dépasse guère 1 µg N. g-1 M.O. h-1.Les taux mesurés dans nos chambres photo-respiratoires, dans les conditions de température et d'éléments nutritifsproches de celles du fleuve, sont très élevés par rapport aux valeurs citées dans la littérature. Ils témoignent de l'importantecontribution qu'apportent les biodermes au processus de dénitrification et, par conséquent, à la réduction de lacharge en nitrates de l'eau de la Garonne.

Nous donnons dans ce travail la description de Fridericia pyrenaica n. sp. et de Cernosvitoviella estaragniensis n. sp. (Oligochaeta, Enchytraeidae). Ces deux espèces nouvelles pour la science ont été récoltées dans divers torrents des Pyrénées centrales.

Un échantillonnage de saumons effectué dans la Nivelle révèle que sa population est en cours de restauration et que le stock de saumons d'élevage y est relativement très important (58 p. 100).

Cet échantillon est essentiellement constitué de grilses (91 p. 100 des individus sauvages et la totalité de ceux d'élevage). Les grilses d'élevage sont d'origine lointaine (Ecosse) ; le taux de capture dans la rivière des saumons provenant des smolt de pisciculture de deux ans est 12 fois plus élevé que celui des smolts d'un an (14,2 p. 1 000 contre 1,2 p. 1 000).

Qu'ils proviennent de smolts sauvages ou d'élevage, les grilses de la Nivelle ont l'une des croissances les plus importantes du bassin atlantique (67,7 cm). Leur sex-ratio nettement en faveur des femelles (1,5 à 1,7/1) est très élevé.

Les repeuplements en smolts d'élevage d'origine étrangère ont permis un bon début de reconstitution du stock de saumon de la Nivelle qui avait pratiquement disparu.

Several new species of Plecoptera (Leuctra hexacanthoides, L. berthelemyi, L. thomasi, Protonemura culmenis, P. canigolensis) collected in the Pyrenees of France, Andorra, and Spain are described and illustrated. Protonemura brevistyla (Ris) and P. montana Kimmins are recorded from the Pyrenees for the first time.
