The Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus) is a ground-nesting raptor that breeds mainly in cereal crops in western Europe. We evaluate how the use of agricultural habitats may affect population sustainability in this species, based on simulation analyses, and explore how conservation measures could be optimized. Probability of extinction increased with decreasing harrier productivity, and this trend was accentuated when the carrying capacity (maximum number of breeding pairs) decreased. Harrier productivity in agricultural habitats is strongly affected by harvesting activities. An average of 60% of nestlings in agricultural areas of France and the Iberian Peninsula would perish in the absence of conservation measures. These losses would make populations unsustainable, if no immigration occurred. Simulation analyses showed that connectivity between populations through natal dispersal could allow persistence of threatened populations even in the absence of conservation measures. The probability of extinction of four hypothetical populations connected through natal dispersal would be lowest if one of those populations were fully protected (or fully productive), even if the other ones were unprotected. Montagu's harriers are semi-colonial, and populations could be considered as a compound of subpopulations (the colonies). Additionally, Montagu's harriers bred more frequently in areas where food abundance was high, and where the number of fledglings produced in the previous reproductive attempt was high. These factors could be used to develop sustainable and efficient conservation plans, identifying and protecting the most productive and stable colonies in agricultural areas, and further exploring experimentally factors that are likely to attract and maintain harriers in protected areas.

Habitat fragmentation is often considered a major threat to biodiversity; however, our understanding of how fragmentation impacts populations is poor. Identifying appropriate models for such studies is difficult. Tree squirrels are dependent on mature forests for food, cover and nests; these are habitats that are being fragmented rapidly and that are easily defined by humans. Squirrels represent excellent models for study of fragmentation. The literature on tree squirrels was reviewed to glean data on density and home-range size in forest fragments. Sufficient data were available on four species (Sciurus carolinensis, S. niger, S. vulgaris, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). Density was negatively related to fragment size for S. carolinensis and S. niger and marginally so for T. hudsonicus. Sciurus vulgaris did not exhibit this relationship. Home-range size was analysed for three species of Sciurus and was positively related to forest fragment size for S. carolinensis and S. niger. Again, only S. vulgaris did not to show this relationship. Sciurus vulgaris is rarely found in small forest fragments and is believed to be especially sensitive to fragmentation; other tree squirrels appear to be sensitive to fragmentation in more subtle ways. Home range compaction provides a mechanism by which densities may increase in small fragments. The demographic consequences resultant from the high densities of squirrels found in small woodlots are not known but may explain the forest damage, avian nest predation and reduced diversity often cited to occur in woodland fragments.

The population of red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) in the British Isles is in decline and is being supplanted by the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). It has been suggested that parapoxvirus-associated disease has caused significant mortality in red squirrels and that grey squirrels are the source of the virus. A direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the measurement of antibody to squirrel parapoxvirus. We tested 140 sera from red squirrels and 223 from grey squirrels from different populations in the UK. A high percentage (61%) of apparently healthy grey squirrels, were found to have been exposed to the parapoxvirus. Only 2.86% (4/140) of red squirrels had antibody and three of these animals had parapoxvirus-associated disease. We postulate that the grey squirrel may act as a reservoir host for the virus.

The eastern spotted skunk (Spilogale putorius) was once common throughout the midwestern and southeastern United States, with consistent annual range-wide harvests of [Gt ]100 000 animals. In the 1940s, however, populations seemingly crashed and the species is currently listed by various state agencies as endangered, threatened, or ‘of concern’ across much of its range. We examined long-term harvest records from 10 states to better understand the 20th century population dynamics of eastern spotted skunks, to discern whether the putative decline was biologically real or an artifact of altered harvest pressures and to identify the timing of the decline. Analyses reveal unequivocally that the species was indeed once common in the Great Plains. Beginning in about 1940, harvests dramatically declined, although the onset of declines differed between states. By the early 1950s total harvests in all states were <10% of pre-crash harvest. Thereafter, rates of decline slowed, but nevertheless continued, such that by the 1980s harvests were <1% of those during pre-decline years. Analyses show that these declines are real and not an artifact of harvest effort. Although the causes of the decline remain unclear, the analyses suggest a need for immediate attention to address the long-term persistence of this species.

Small isolated populations may face an increasing risk of extinction due to the loss of genetic diversity. This increasing risk, though, may be offset by gene flow, provided the population receives an adequate number of migrants per generation. We show that as temporal fluctuation in population size (FPS) increases, so too does the required number of immigrants. This increase in the requisite number of immigrants arises because the ratio of census size to effective population size decreases with increasing FPS. Because all populations fluctuate, our work extends a recent challenge to the widely adopted one migrant per generation rule, which refers to the supposedly requisite number of immigrants. In a sample of 44 animal populations, ˜60% of the populations fluctuated enough to require >10 immigrants per generation to avoid a substantial loss of genetic diversity, and ˜25% fluctuated enough to require >20 immigrants per generation. We thus recommend that estimation of the requisite number of immigrants take into account fluctuation in population size.

Management strategies that attempt to mitigate tropical biodiversity loss require detailed studies of biodiversity in different land-uses. In this study the community structure and species richness of songbirds was characterised along with the vegetation structure, in three land-use types in and around a tropical forest reserve in Uganda (intact, mature forest; regenerating secondary forest; smallholder agriculture). Each land-use type had 30–35 count stations that were sampled twice by means of a 15-min recording session. In total, 118 bird species were recorded from 192 station counts. Number of species/station was similar in intact and regenerating forest and lower in smallholder agriculture. Songbird communities in intact forest were highly distinct from those in smallholder agriculture and were composed of forest-dependent species. Communities in regenerating forest were intermediate between intact forest and agriculture, although much closer to intact forest. Generalised Linear Model (GLM) modelling revealed that tree density and distance to the nearest intact forest had strong positive and non-linear effects on the community composition and forest species richness of songbirds. Simulations using these models showed that agroforestry programmes would not raise tree densities to levels that would shift agricultural songbird communities towards forest communities. Current and best-case agricultural practices are therefore unlikely to contribute to the conservation of the songbird component of forest biodiversity in this area.

Many species modify their behaviour in response to the scents of their predators, but species or populations living without predators may lose such abilities. This loss has been suggested to be irreversible, and to constitute a significant hurdle in restoring historical ecosystems. Olfactory predator recognition was studied in two macropodid marsupials - the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) and the red-necked pademelon (Thylogale thetis). Both species are in the ‘critical weight range’ of Australian native mammals that have been negatively affected by the introduction of novel predators since European settlement. Predator-naïve animals were tested by exposing subjects simultaneously to two feeders with either a predator or a herbivore faecal or urine sample beneath the food tray. The presence of predator olfactory cues beneath the feeder did not affect foraging behaviour or feeder use when compared to control stimuli (herbivore faeces or urine). Previous studies have found that predator-experienced herbivorous marsupials modify their behaviour in the presence of predator scents. In contrast, our studies of predator-naïve individuals found no evidence of such selectivity, suggesting that marsupial herbivores may have to learn to modify their behaviour in response to olfactory cues from predators. This implies that the loss of olfactory predator recognition may not be irreversible. Animals translocated from predator-free areas could potentially be trained to recognise the smells of their predators.

Genetic diversity within a population is a critical parameter for conservation biologists to assess. One approach for examining genetic diversity is through the determination of effective population sizes. Animal Conservation recently published a review of genetic approaches for estimating effective population sizes. We felt this review was incomplete both methodologically and conceptually. Here we extend that review to include coalescent-based approaches for estimating effective population sizes. We then discuss different kinds of effective population sizes, including inbreeding, variance and eigenvalue effective sizes.

Identification of reliable surrogate indicator taxa and effective shortcuts for the preservation of overall biodiversity is a major challenge. Encouragingly, complementarity-derived priority sets of focal taxa were found highly effective in representing non-target taxa in a study from Ugandan forests. It has been proposed cross-taxon congruence in complementarity is less distinct in temperate regions than in the tropics, because temperate regions have fewer species, and hence focal taxa may be less effective as they are less diverse. To test this, we used all available atlas data (10 × 10 km scale) in Denmark (butterflies, birds, amphibians, reptiles, large moths, bats and click beetles, n = 434 species), and looked at whether conservation priority areas based on one taxonomic group represent species richness of other groups in a highly fragmented landscape. We apply a new approach (based on G-statistics) that enables statistical evaluation of cross-taxon congruence in complementarity-derived priority sets. We found indications that the same taxa represented other groups effectively and exhibited cross-taxon congruence in complementarity-derived priority sets. Birds performed significantly, but relatively poorly, butterflies somewhat better and bats relatively well in representing species richness of other groups. Large moths performed best and may be an overlooked predictor of diversity in other animal taxa.

Sequences from complete mitochondrial cytochrome b genes of 34 tigers support the hypothesis that Sumatran tigers are diagnostically distinct from mainland populations. None of the latter, including Bengals, Siberians, or Indochinese tigers, were found to have fixed diagnostic characters. Phylogenetic analysis of these sequences confirms these results. Within the framework of a phylogenetic species concept, current evidence thus supports the recognition of two distinct taxa, and within the context of this definition they could be ranked at the species level. This paper also documents a previously unrecognized nuclear insert of mitochondrial DNA that includes, minimally, mitochondrial homologues of a control region that lacks the feline mitochondrial repeat sequences, a complete cytochrome b gene, and complete tRNAThr and tRNAsurPro genes. In a phylogenetic analysis of the nuclear cytochrome b-like sequences and various feline mitochondrial sequences, the nuclear insert clusters with lion mitochondrial cytochrome b sequences, which suggests the insert is at least as old as the split between lions and tigers. The results of this study emphasize the importance of doing more to conserve Sumatran tigers. Because they are underrepresented in zoos relative to Bengals and Siberians, an effort should be made to increase captive breeding stocks of Sumatrans. That Sumatrans are a distinct taxonomic entity relative to mainland populations can be used in educational programs to increase conservation efforts within Indonesia.

Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystem in the sea. Throughout the world they are being over-fished, polluted and destroyed, placing biodiversity at risk. To date, much of the concern over biodiversity loss has centred on local losses and the possibility of global extinction has largely been discounted. However, recent research has shown that 24% of reef fish species have restricted ranges (< 800 000 km2), with 9% highly restricted (< 50 000 km2). Restricted-range species are thought to face a greater risk of extinction than more widespread species since local impacts could cause global loss. We searched for information on status in the wild and characteristics of 397 restricted-range reef fish species. Fish body size, habitat requirements and usefulness to people were compared with those of a taxonomically-matched sample of more widespread species. We found that on average species with restricted ranges were significantly smaller (mean total length 19.1 cm versus 24.4 cm), tended to have narrower habitat requirements and were less used by people. Greater habitat specificity will tend to increase extinction risk while, if real, more limited usefulness (equivalent to exploitation) may reduce risk. Fifty-eight percent of restricted-range species were considered common/abundant in the wild and 42% uncommon/rare. Population status and threats to 319 species for which data were available were assessed according to the categories and criteria of the IUCN red list of threatened animals. A number of species were found to be rare, were exploited and had highly restricted ranges overlapping areas where reef degradation is particularly severe, placing them at a high risk of extinction. Five species were listed as Critically Endangered, two of them possibly already extinct in the wild, one as Endangered and 172 as Vulnerable. A further 126 species fell into Lower Risk categories and 11 were considered Data Deficient. Given the intensity of impacts to reefs, the broad geographical areas affected and the large numbers of restricted-range species, global extinctions seem likely. Urgent management action is now crucial for the survival of several species of reef fishes.

We surveyed birds in cacao (Theobroma cacao) plantations in the state of Tabasco, Mexico. The shade canopy was planted by farmers and consisted of approximately 60 species of trees with no single dominant species. Canopy height averaged 15 m and the structure was multi-storied. We conducted 220 ten minute, 25 m radius point counts for birds and detected 1550 individuals from 81 species. The average number of birds/point and the expected diversity in a fixed number of individuals within the cacao surveyed were well within the range of other lowland habitats, including agricultural sites, that we have surveyed previously in neighbouring Chiapas. In the Tabascan cacao, the migrant group was composed, in part, of forest species, and dimorphic species were represented primarily by males, which in other areas are known to dominate forest or forest-like habitats. In contrast to the composition of migrant species, we found few resident forest specialists in Tabascan cacao. Instead, the tropical resident group was composed of large-bodied generalist species that use small patches of trees in open habitats. These results (moderate diversity, low numbers of forest specialists) differ from the few studies completed in ‘rustic’ cacao systems located near large tracts of forest. The planted shade cacao agroecosystem – at least in the absence of nearby forest – may have a limited value for conserving lost tropical forest bird diversity, but it provides habitat for woodland-associated migratory species. Our results also indicate that the planted shade cacao plantations supported few small omnivorous or frugivorous species, probably because cacao itself, as well as the dominant shade trees, produce primarily mammal or wind dispersed fruit and seeds.

The human contribution to ambient noise in the ocean has increased over the past 50 years, and is dominated by low-frequency (LF) sound (frequencies <1000 Hz) from shipping, oil and gas development, defence-related and research activities. Mysticete whales, including six endangered species, may be at risk from this noise pollution because all species produce and probably perceive low-frequency sound. We conducted a manipulative field experiment to test the effects of loud, LF noise on foraging fin blue (B. musculus) and (Balaenoptera physalus) whales off San Nicolas Island, California. Naive observers used a combination of attached tracking devices, ship-based surveys, aerial surveys, photo-identification and passive monitoring of vocal behaviour to examine the behaviour and distribution of whales when a loud LF source (US Navy SURTASS LFA) was and was not transmitting. During transmission, 12-30% of the estimated received levels of LFA of whales in the study area exceeded 140 dB re 1 μPa. However, whales continued to be seen foraging in the region. Overall, whale encounter rates and diving behaviour appeared to be more strongly linked to changes in prey abundance associated with oceanographic parameters than to LF sound transmissions. In some cases, whale vocal behaviour was significantly different between experimental and non-experimental periods. However, these differences were not consistent and did not appear to be related to LF sound transmissions. At the spatial and temporal scales examined, we found no obvious responses of whales to a loud, anthropogenic, LF sound. We suggest that the cumulative effects of anthropogenic LF noise over larger temporal and spatial scales than examined here may be a more important consideration for management agencies.

Biotic homogenization is seen as the consequence of preferential loss of native species followed by ecological replacement with widespread exotics. Homogenization is not random in its effects on higher taxa. Using Monte Carlo simulations (rather than binomial statistics) we find taxonomic patterns in the risk of extinction and probability of successful introduction among birds. Sixteen avian families selectively contain extinct or threatened birds. Eight avian families selectively contain successfully introduced birds. Eight of these 24 taxonomically selected families have not been identified in previous studies, presumably because they are species-poor. The 22 living taxonomically selected families are classified into four homogenization categories. These categories reflect how extinction and invasion are combining in their effects at the family level. Range size, as indexed by island endemism, and human influence are the primary forces driving taxonomic homogenization patterns among birds. There is no evidence that evolutionary age influences homogenization patterns. Phylogenetic comparative analyses, which explicitly recognize the role of human influence, are needed to elucidate more detailed ecological correlates to homogenization trends.

The globally significant dugong population of Torres Strait supports an important indigenous fishery for meat and oil. The fishery is protected by the Torres Strait Treaty between Australia and Papua New Guinea. A time series of aerial survey estimates from 1987–2001 confirms that there is considerable temporal variability in the size of the dugong population in the region and adds to a growing body of evidence from other aerial surveys and satellite tracking that dugongs undertake large-scale movements associated with temporal and spatial changes in the distribution of their seagrass food. The magnitude of these effects on both the size of the population and the catch cannot be disaggregated from the effects of population depletion from over-harvesting. The Potential Biological Removal method was used in conjunction with the aerial survey data to estimate sustainable anthropogenic mortality from all causes for a range of empirically-derived estimates of dugong life-history parameters. These estimates of a sustainable harvest are so far below the current harvest that it must be unsustainable. Governments should heed the Islanders' requests for assistance in implementing co-management of the fishery as a matter of urgency.

The Greater Chassahowitzka black bear population is the smallest documented in North America with fewer than 20 individuals. Its future depends on landscape linkages with other bear populations that are separated by denatured habitat. We used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to identify potential landscape linkages between this isolated population and six others in Florida. Pathway lengths ranged from 60–194 km with varying potentials for facilitating black bear dispersal. Each pathway incorporated 35Ð88% conservation land and encountered at least 11 dispersal bottlenecks. Even pathways that incorporated extensive conservation land encountered bottlenecks that make these linkages potentially unviable. All six pathways, however, passed through ≥95% core black bear habitat. Thus, the infrastructure for a conservation network is still largely intact. The Suwannee pathway provides the best opportunity to restore connectivity between the Greater Chassahowitzka Ecosystem (GCE) and a southward colonising bear population in the Big Bend region. However, intensification of development poses an immediate threat to maintaining connectivity between the GCE and other bear populations in Florida. Through immediate strategic planning and active conservation and restoration measures, many of the generated pathways can provide long-term connectivity. Least-cost path analyses can aid in the conservation of wide-ranging animals by providing managers with a science-based, empirically derived blueprint of potential landscape linkages.

The Atlantic forests of South America hold a great concentration of biodiversity, but most of this habitat has been destroyed. We therefore expect many species to become extinct, and yet no bird extinctions have conclusively been recorded. There could be three explanations for this. First, birds may be able to adapt to deforested landscapes. Second, many species may have become extinct before they were known to science. Third, there may be a time-lag following deforestation before extinction occurs. We present the most complete list to date of the endemic birds of the Atlantic forests (124 forest-dependent species), and then use the species–area relationship to predict how many species we expect to become extinct through deforestation (51 species i.e. 41%). We also count how many Atlantic forest endemic birds are independently considered ‘threatened’ with ‘a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future’ (45 species i.e. 36%). We compare these totals and find that they are similar, suggesting that there is a time-lag between deforestation and extinction. We go on to test the robustness of this result by varying the parameters used to make our predictions. The only parameter that varies enough to substantially weaken predictions based on deforestation is the habitat classification of Atlantic ‘forest’ birds. If we include species that can survive in secondary and non-forest habitats then, unsurprisingly, we find that deforestation overestimates threat. Overall, not only does deforestation accurately predict threat to Atlantic forest endemic birds, but this result is robust enough to accommodate considerable variability within our data.

The impact of introduced herbivores on the composition and structure of plant communities has been widely studied. However, little is known about how they affect wildlife. We studied the impact of feral horses under different grazing regimes on the communities of birds in a nature reserve in the Pampas grasslands in Argentina. The areas that had predominantly tall grass (enclosures and areas of moderate grazing intensity) showed the greatest species richness and total abundance of birds. Some species, e.g. the southern lapwing (Vanellus chilensis), were associated with the presence of horses, while others, e.g. pipits (Anthus spp), were more common in lesser grazed areas. The presence of feral horses was associated with an increase in the rate of predation of eggs which varied from 12.5% within the enclosures to 70% in grazed areas. It is suggested that the increase in predation rate was due to the increased visibility of the nests and an increase in the density of opportunist carnivores. Small areas of grassland in a good state of conservation could serve as sources that would maintain communities of birds in the more transformed sections.

South Africa's National Parks Board has opted to control African elephants (Loxodonta africana) through culling in the Kruger National Park (KNP). Killing elephants is highly controversial. The Board must balance this controversy against the probable destruction of vegetation and the consequent depletion of biological diversity that high elephant densities cause. Annual aerial counts provided the population estimates on which the culling quotas were based. For management purposes, the elephant population of the Park is divided into four sub-populations. From 1984 to 1994, the annual quota was usually taken from only one of these sub-populations during a given year. This resulted in 3 to 5 years elapsing between culls in each sub-population. We investigated the year-to-year changes in densities after culling. These changes were density dependent. Density dependence implies that immediate culls following estimated high densities may be premature. If left alone, the densities would decline naturally. Indeed, culling becomes self-reinforcing as it moves population densities towards the level where reproduction is greatest. Data confirm this intuition: at densities greater than 0.37 elephants/km2 elephant numbers generally declined without culling. Many culls were unnecessary. Culling, as implemented in the past, may have had consequences for elephants and their habitat that were different to those expected from a mere reduction in their numbers. Densities in the year immediately after a cull tended to decline – not increase as would be expected from density dependence alone. Undoubtedly, this unexpected decline was the consequence of disturbance and subsequent emigration. In following years, the densities rose as animals moved back into the sub-population. A management programme where culling will be instituted only when densities exceed 0.37 elephants/km2 in selected regions in the park for at least 1 year, may be more acceptable than the programme used up to 1995. However, we do not know if the vegetation of KNP can withstand the resulting episodic high densities. With densities presently exceeding the cut-off values calculated for both the south and the northern management regions vegetation changes there need to be monitored.

Relationships between mean individual fitness and genetic heterozygosity remain controversial because multiple studies over many years have yielded inconsistent results. However, molecular measurements of genetic variation have mostly been based on allozyme markers, which may have substantial limitations due to their relative insensitivity and occasionally also to the effects of natural selection. We investigated variation in the number of tandem dinucleotide repeats at eight polymorphic microsatellite loci in 38 natterjack toad, Bufo calamita, populations that varied in census size, degree of isolation and distance from the distributional range edge. We also measured fitness attributes, notably larval survival and growth rates, under standardized conditions using samples from six of these populations. The results indicated that larval growth rates were positively and strongly correlated with expected heterozygosity (He) across the microsatellite loci. He was in turn highest in large populations with minimal isolation, but low near the biogeographical range edge irrespective of population size. Larvae from the smallest and most isolated natterjack population exhibited particularly low fitness and heterozygosity. Our results suggest that microsatellite loci may provide a valuable new approach in studies of links between fitness and heterozygosity.
