Stone piling among the Nez Perces was an integral part of the vision quest. Recent ethnographic observations indicate that, although it served several purposes, one of the most important was to encourage particular types of visions.

A recent toy that utilizes heated plastic and a partial vacuum to produce a form likeness is applicable to three-dimensional artifact reproduction. Mobility, speed, low cost, and simplicity of operation enhance its possible value to a variety of workers.

In their respective sections of Prehistoric Man in the New World, Heizer and Jennings refer to the San Dieguito type sites as belonging to Phase I of that culture. In a recent review of these sections Meighan emphasizes this allocation to Phase I and denies the validity of the division of the culture into phases, alleging that the entire culture sequence is based on an assertion by Rogers. On the basis of Rogers’ published reports, an analysis by Warren and True, and my own field experience, the type site is properly assigned to Phase III.

Three new radiocarbon dates are presented for two sambaquίs in Brazil. These agree with dates previously reported.

An attempt is made to correlate the finds recently published in this journal by Doris Stone and Carlos Balser with the Coe-Baudez sequence in northwestern Costa Rica. The 25 tombs at La Fortuna cover the whole Linear Decorated period, with one tomb belonging to the preceding and another one to the succeeding period. The material listed from Guácimo is tentatively dated to the Middle Polychrome period corresponding to the Mesoamerican Postclassic. It is shown that these finds do not contradict the Coe-Baudez sequence, but rather confirm it. A few remarks are added about the condition of Costa Rican archaeology.
