This annotated bibliography includes a small sample of sources on various aspects of research methodology from diverse disciplines that influence research on artificial intelligence techniques in engineering design analysis and manufacturing (AIEDAM). Some of these sources are extended edited volumes containing many relevant contributions and pointing to additional references. These volumes are marked by a preceding bullet (•). The bibliography is not comprehensive; it covers only several important subjects, and in each subject it lists several representative contributions ordered chronologically.

Engineering design has proven to be a rich context for applying artificial intelligence (AI) methods, but a categorization of such methods applied in AI-based design research works seems to be lacking. This paper presents a focused literature review of AI-based methods mapped to the different stages of the engineering design process and describes how these methods assist the design process. We surveyed 108 AI-based engineering design papers from peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and mapped their contribution to five stages of the engineering design process. We categorized seven AI-based methods in our dataset. Our literature study indicated that most AI-based design research works are targeted at the conceptual and preliminary design stages. Given the open-ended, ambiguous nature of these early stages, these results are unexpected. We conjecture that this is likely a result of several factors, including the iterative nature of design tasks in these stages, the availability of open design data repositories, and the inclination to use AI for processing computationally intensive tasks, like those in these stages. Our study also indicated that these methods support designers by synthesizing and/or analyzing design data, concepts, and models in the design stages. This literature review aims to provide readers with an informative mapping of different AI tools to engineering design stages and to potentially motivate engineers, design researchers, and students to understand the current state-of-the-art and identify opportunities for applying AI applications in engineering design.

With the increasing demand for a personalized product and rapid market response, many companies expect to explore online user-generated content (UGC) for intelligent customer hearing and product redesign strategy. UGC has the advantages of being more unbiased than traditional interviews, yielding in-time response, and widely accessible with a sheer volume. From online resources, customers’ preferences toward various aspects of the product can be exploited by promising sentiment analysis methods. However, due to the complexity of language, state-of-the-art sentiment analysis methods are still not accurate for practice use in product redesign. To tackle this problem, we propose an integrated customer hearing and product redesign system, which combines the robust use of sentiment analysis for customer hearing and coordinated redesign mechanisms. Ontology and expert knowledges are involved to promote the accuracy. Specifically, a fuzzy product ontology that contains domain knowledges is first learned in a semi-supervised way. Then, UGC is exploited with a novel ontology-based fine-grained sentiment analysis approach. Extracted customer preference statistics are transformed into multilevels, for the automatic establishment of opportunity landscapes and house of quality table. Besides, customer preference statistics are interactively visualized, through which representative customer feedbacks are concurrently generated. Through a case study of smartphone, the effectiveness of the proposed system is validated, and applicable redesign strategies for a case product are provided. With this system, information including customer preferences, user experiences, using habits and conditions can be exploited together for reliable product redesign strategy elicitation.

The job scheduling problem (JSP) is considered as one of the most complex combinatorial optimization problems. JSP is not an independent task, but is rather a part of a company business case. In this paper, we have studied JSPs under sudden machine breakdown scenarios that introduce a risk of not completing the jobs on time. We have first solved JSPs using an improved memetic algorithm and extended the algorithm to deal with the disruption situations, and then developed a simulation model to analyze the risk of using a job order and delivery scenario. This paper deals with job scheduling under ideal conditions and rescheduling under machine breakdown, and provides a risk analysis for a production business case. The extended algorithm provides better understanding and results than existing algorithms, the rescheduling shows a good way of recovering from disruptions, and the risk analysis shows an effective way of maximizing return under such situations.

A main theme of concurrent engineering is the effective communication between relevant disciplines. Any computer tools for concurrent engineering must provide sufficient constructs and strategies for this purpose. This paper describes the AGENTS system, a domain-independent general-purpose Object-Oriented Prolog language for cooperating expert systems in concurrent engineering design. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating the use of the AGENTS constructs for distributed knowledge representation and the cooperation strategies for communication, collaboration, conflict resolution, and control. A simple case study is presented to illustrate the balance between simplicity and flexibility.

In a construction project, resource leveling techniques are necessary as a primary schedule-improvement tool to reduce overall project cost by decreasing day-to-day fluctuation in resource usage and resource idleness. There are, however, some limitations in traditional resource leveling techniques. Conventional heuristic approaches cannot guarantee a near-optimum solution for every construction project; a given heuristic may perform well on one project and poorly on another. The existing optimization approaches, such as linear programming and enumeration methods, are best applicable only to small size problems. Recently, there has been success in the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for solving some optimization problems. The paper discusses how state-of-the-art ANNs can be a functional alternative to traditional resource leveling techniques. It then investigates the application of different ANN models (such as backpropagation networks, Hopfield networks, Boltzmann machines, and competition ANNs) to resource leveling problems. Because the development of ANNs involves not only science but also experience, the paper presents various intuitive yet effective ways of mapping resource leveling problems on different applicable ANN architectures. To demonstrate the application of ANNs to resource leveling, a simple ANN model is developed using a Hopfield network. The conclusion highlights the usefulness and the limitations of ANNs when applied to resource leveling problems.

A multistudy approach is presented that allows design thinking of complex systems to be studied by triangulating causal controlled lab findings with coded data from more complex products. A case study illustration of this approach is provided. During the conceptual design of engineering systems, designers face many cognitive challenges, including design fixation, errors in their mental models, and the sunk cost effect. These factors need to be mitigated for the generation of effective ideas. Understanding the effects of these challenges in a realistic and complex engineering system is especially difficult due to a variety of factors influencing the results. Studying the design of such systems in a controlled environment is extremely challenging because of the scale and complexity of such systems and the time needed to design the systems. Considering these challenges, a mixed-method approach is presented for studying the design thinking of complex engineering systems. This approach includes a controlled experiment with a simple system and a qualitative cognitive-artifacts study on more complex engineering systems followed by the triangulation of results. The triangulated results provide more generalizable information for complex system design thinking. This method combines the advantages of quantitative and qualitative study methods, making them more powerful while studying complex engineering systems. The proposed method is illustrated further using an illustrative study on the cognitive effects of physical models during the design of engineering systems.

This paper presents a method for the automatic deduction of priority lists of input information as well as for the extraction of task relations from the available design knowledge. The method is based on multiple extensive searches of the design space and produces a final priority list for the instantiation of the primary design entities. If followed, this list ensures the generation of the most decisive design information at the very beginning of the design process. Additionally, the method can produce a priority list of design tasks, which represents the order of completion of these tasks. Finally, it offers a representation platform for tracking the evolution of the design process. First, a brief overview of the current literature is presented, after which the method is presented in detail. Entities, descriptors, and tasks are used for the representation of the design knowledge. They are linked in order to form multiple design relations, formally represented by digraphs. Simple set relations and graph theories are used as mathematical background to the method. Design experience is also taken into account through a weighting process of the primary design entities. Finally, an example of a belt conveyor design is presented, followed by a discussion of the results and some general conclusions. The method may be considered as a design-assisting tool that dynamically processes pieces of design knowledge and suggests corresponding design paths. Additionally, it relates the design tasks in a ordered form. Its extension—currently under elaboration—is expected to treat systematically the problem of identifying and handling the design knowledge inconsistencies.

This is the second paper in the series on shape decompositions and their use as shape approximations. This time we investigate hierarchical and topological shape decompositions or hierarchies and topologies. We showed earlier that bounded decompositions behave the same way as shapes do. The same holds for hierarchies and topologies, which are special kinds of bounded decompositions. They are distinguished by their algebraic structures, which have many important properties to facilitate their application as shape approximations. We provide an account of their properties with an emphasis on their application.

It is known that wherever there is human interaction, there is social influence. Here, we refer to more influential individuals as “influencers”, who drive team processes for better or worst. Social influence gives rise to social learning, the propensity of humans to mimic the most influential individuals. As individual learning is affected by the presence of an influencer, so is an individual's idea generation . Examining this phenomenon through a series of human studies would require an enormous amount of time to study both individual and team behaviors that affect design outcomes. Hence, this paper provides an agent-based approach to study the effect of influencers during idea generation. This model is supported by the results of two empirical experiments which validate the assumptions and sustain the logic implemented in the model. The results of the model simulation make it possible to examine the impact of influencers on design outcomes, assessed in the form of exploration of design solution space and quality of the solution. The results show that teams with a few prominent influencers generate solutions with limited diversity. Moreover, during idea generation, the behavior of the teams with uniform distribution of influence is regulated by their team members' self-efficacy.

This paper describes an approach to the analysis of design concepts (DCs) using the rough set theory. The proposed approach attempts to extract design knowledge from past designs, and used the knowledge obtained to perform DC–capability mapping in a dynamic design evolution environment. The mapping enables designers to estimate the feasibility of a DC to meet stipulated design specifications. The proposed approach encompasses two algorithms, namely, the dissimilar objects algorithm and the attribute decomposition algorithm, to deal with an information system with unavailable information and multidecision attributes, respectively. The details of these algorithms are presented. A case study on the design of vacuum cleaners is used to illustrate the capability of the proposed approach.

Studies show that there are shortcomings in applying conventional methods for the emotional evaluation of the aircraft cockpit. In order to resolve this problem, a more efficient cockpit emotion evaluation system is established in the present study to simply and quickly obtain the cockpit emotion evaluation value. To this end, the neural network is applied to construct an emotional model to evaluate the emotional prediction of the interior design of the aircraft cockpit. Moreover, several technologies and the Kansei engineering method are applied to acquire the cockpit interior emotional evaluation data for typical aircraft models. In this regard, the radical basis function neural network (RBFNN), Elman neural network (ENN), and the general regression neural network (GRNN) are applied to construct the sentimental prediction evaluation model. Then, the three models are comprehensively compared through factors such as the model evaluation criteria, network structure, and network parameters. Obtained experimental results indicate that the GRNN not only has the highest classification accuracy but also has the highest stability in comparison to the other two neural networks, so that it is a more appropriate method for the emotional evaluation of the aircraft cockpit. Results of the present study provide decision supports for the emotional evaluation of the cockpit interior space.

Nowadays, the use of virtual reality/virtual acoustics (VR/VA) in archaeology for rendering lost buildings is an important topic in the cultural heritage field. Moreover, the addition of additional senses apart from the sight increases the feeling of immersion in virtual environments. The aim of this paper is to show the interaction work developed in a VA system, based on Unity and FMOD, the graphical and acoustical reconstruction of an ancient building and the development of a VR goggles with headphones to render 3D audio and video interactively. This system has been implemented to render auralizations in a binaural system and has been applied to the renderization of an old and lost theatre in València (Spain). The first building of theatre was built in the 16th century, and was rebuilt several times until the 18th century. The auralization of several theatrical excerpts of different Spanish authors of that time is also presented. The integrated system has been subjectively evaluated, obtaining very satisfactory results.

We believe that the future for problem solving method (PSM) derived work is very promising. In short, PSMs provide a solid foundation for creating a semantic layer supporting planetary-scale networks. Moreover, within a world-scale network where billions services are used and created by billions of parties in ad hoc dynamic fashion we believe that PSM-based mechanisms provide the only viable approach to dealing the sheer scale systematically. Our current experiments in this area are based upon a generic ontology for describing Web services derived from earlier work on PSMs. We outline how platforms based on our ontology can support large-scale networked interactivity in three main areas. Within a large European project we are able to map business level process descriptions to semantic Web service descriptions, to enable business experts to manage and use enterprise processes running in corporate information technology systems. Although highly successful, Web service-based applications predominately run behind corporate firewalls and are far less pervasive on the general Web. Within a second large European project we are extending our semantic service work using the principles underlying the Web and Web 2.0 to transform the Web from a Web of data to one where services are managed and used at large scale. Significant initiatives are now underway in North America, Asia, and Europe to design a new Internet using a “clean-slate” approach to fulfill the demands created by new modes of use and the additional 3 billion users linked to mobile phones. Our investigations within the European-based Future Internet program indicate that a significant opportunity exists for our PSM-derived work to address the key challenges currently identified: scalability, trust, interoperability, pervasive usability, and mobility. We outline one PSM-derived approach as an exemplar.

We present methods and tools from the Soft Computing (SC) domain, which is used within the diagnostics and prognostics framework to accommodate imprecision of real systems. SC is an association of computing methodologies that includes as its principal members fuzzy, neural, evolutionary, and probabilistic computing. These methodologies enable us to deal with imprecise, uncertain data and incomplete domain knowledge typically encountered in real-world applications. We outline the advantages and disadvantages of these methodologies and show how they can be combined to create synergistic hybrid SC systems. We conclude the paper with a description of successful SC case study applications to equipment diagnostics.

Access to vast datasets of visual and textual materials has become significantly easier. How to take advantage of the conveniently available data to support creative design activities remains a challenge. In the phase of idea generation, the visual analogy is considered an effective strategy to stimulate designers to create innovative ideas. Designers can read useful information off vague and incomplete conceptual visual representations, or stimuli, to reach potential visual analogies. In this paper, a computational framework is proposed to search and retrieve visual stimulation cues, which is expected to have the potential to help designers generate more creative ideas by avoiding visual fixation. The research problems include identifying and detecting visual similarities between visual representations from various categories and quantitatifying the visual similarity measures serving as a distance metric for visual stimuli search and retrieval. A deep neural network model is developed to learn a latent space that can discover visual relationships between multiple categories of sketches. In addition, a top cluster detection-based method is proposed to quantify visual similarity based on the overlapped magnitude in the latent space and then effectively rank categories. The QuickDraw sketch dataset is applied as a backend for evaluating the functionality of our proposed framework. Beyond visual stimuli retrieval, this research opens up new opportunities for utilizing extensively available visual data as creative materials to benefit design-by-analogy.

This academic-based investigation is focused on identifying elements that contribute toward the generation of efficient design briefs and their correlation with design outcomes of a sketching exercise. Four conditions are compared: a baseline group, an abstract group, a contextual information group, and a group that was given various example solutions. Via more in-depth surveys, we sought to elicit correlations between the students’ design creativity and stimuli permutations of the different design conditions. Results show that the contextual information groups, which were presented with higher levels of stimulus fidelity, had higher novelty scores, while abstract groups performed well in usefulness. These findings contribute to the formulation of design briefs where the goal is to stimulate the creativity of design outcomes and examine their relationships with student's perceptions of design exercises.

With growing city density and mass gatherings held all over the world in urban spaces, crowd disasters have been happening each year. In considering the avoidance of crowd disasters and the reduction of fatalities, it is important to analyze the efficient spatial layout of the public space in situations of high crowd density. Compared with traditional empirical design methods, computational approaches have better abilities for quantitative analysis and are gradually being adopted in the planning and management of the urban public space. In this paper, we investigated the official documents, publicly available videos, and materials of the Shanghai waterfront crowd disaster which happened on December 31, 2014. Based on the investigation, a detailed site survey was conducted and pedestrian flow data were acquired. To test the influence of different spatial layouts, an agent-based simulator is built, following the ASPFver4.0 (Agent Simulator of Pedestrian Flow) pedestrian walking rules. With the surveyed pedestrian flow data, the original spatial layout of the Shanghai Bund waterfront together with five other comparison scenarios are tested, including both space design and crowd management improvements. In the simulation results, the efficiencies of different space design and crowd management solutions are compared. The results show that even simple crowd control measures such as capacity reserve and more proper route planning will allow for a positive improvement in crowd safety. The results also compare the efficiency of different spatial operations and give general suggestions to the problems urban public space designers should consider in high-density environments.

The ability to work with ambiguity and compute new designs based on both defined and emergent shapes are unique advantages of shape grammars. Realizing these benefits in design practice requires the implementation of general purpose shape grammar interpreters that support: (a) the detection of arbitrary subshapes in arbitrary shapes and (b) the application of shape rules that use these subshapes to create new shapes. The complexity of currently available interpreters results from their combination of shape computation (for subshape detection and the application of rules) with computational geometry (for the geometric operations need to generate new shapes). This paper proposes a shape grammar implementation method for three-dimensional circular arcs represented as rational quadratic Bézier curves based on lattice theory that reduces this complexity by separating steps in a shape computation process from the geometrical operations associated with specific grammars and shapes. The method is demonstrated through application to two well-known shape grammars: Stiny's triangles grammar and Jowers and Earl's trefoil grammar. A prototype computer implementation of an interpreter kernel has been built and its application to both grammars is presented. The use of Bézier curves in three dimensions opens the possibility to extend shape grammar implementations to cover the wider range of applications that are needed before practical implementations for use in real life product design and development processes become feasible.
