In August 1944, after more than twenty years of exile, His Eminence al-Sayyid Muhammad Idris, the Head of the Islamic Order of the Sanusiya, paid a visit to Cyrenaica as the guest of the British Administration of that country. The following account of the Sanusi of Cyrenaica may be of interest, since though the Sanusi became well known to us during the last war, and even better known during the present war, in which they have been our Allies, few of those who have met them in their country know their history.

Princess Bahashule, daughter of the late King Bunu, was close on thirty and not yet married. No one, however, thought of calling her a saliwakati (unwanted woman). Late marriage was the privilege of her rank and Bunu's eldest daughter Ladluli was also single. This had not prevented them from having lovers; indeed Bahashule already had a child by a commoner. Both Bahashule's own parents were dead, and she lived at Zombodze, the former capital of the Swazi nation. She was on good terms with Sobhuza, the king (her half-brother), and the ruling queen-mothrr (her ‘big mother’) and frequently came to stay with them.

Nana Sir Ofori Atta, K.B.E., died on 23 August 1943 after occupying the Paramount Stool of the tribe of Akim Abuakwa since 1912. He was a striking personality and without doubt the outstanding African of his generation in the Gold Coast. His statesmanship both in his tribal affairs and in the general politics of the Colony was exceptional. He was at once the chief of his own people, the acknowledged leader of his brother chiefs in the Colony, and the valued and trusted adviser of the Government.
