Among the Yoruba, cooking is done on a hearth (aro, adiro) consisting of three stones or lumps of clay on which a pot may be set over a wood fire. Five principal cooking techniques are employed:

se, bǫ, to boil in water, or to steam in leaves;

din, to fry in deep oil;

yan, ta, to toast beside the fire, or in live embers or in a potsherd or dry pot over the fire;

sun, to roast in the fire;

bu, to bake in hot ashes.

Ibadan is said to be the largest town in tropical Africa and is widely known as a rail and road junction, an air-port, and a large commercial and marketing centre. Ibadan is also a centre for education: it possesses primary, secondary, and training schools of various types, and has been chosen as the site of the new University College. There are about 50 churches in the town, and hundreds of mosques.

This year we celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of our foundation, and it may be appropriate to offer a brief survey of the development of the Institute, and of the manner in which, during these years, the aims of its founders have been pursued. Those aims were set out by Lord Lugard, our first Chairman, in an article printed in the first number of Africa (January 1928).

Les Africains se sont trouvés dans l'obligation d'employer des mots nouveaux pour désigner des choses qui n'existaient pas avant l'arrivée des Européens. Ces néologismes produisent souvent de belles réussites et ainsi des mots pittoresques se sont formés. Nous donnons comme exemple quelques mots du vocabulaire francomalinké de la Guinée Française.

La section desociologie de l'Institut d'Études Centrafricaines a accompliune mission au Gabon pour le compte du Haut-Commissaire de la Republique et du gouvernement du territoire. Le but en était: étude des conditions démographiques, économiques; étude de structure sociale, de la structure des villages et des possibilités de regroupement et de modernisation. La mission était composée de M. G. Balandier (directeur de l'Institut) et M. J. Cl. Pauvert (ancien directeur de l'Institut Éthiopien, sociologue attaché au Cabinet du Haut-Commissaire), auxquels se joignaient les collaborateurs locaux (médecins et agronomes). La mission a opéré dans les régions administratives de la Ngounie, de la Nyanga et du Woleu-ntem. Un rapport vient d'être élabore à l'usage de 1'Administration; les chapitres relatifs à la démographie et aux structures sociales seront enrichis et pourront faire l'objet d'une publication.

In his review-article ‘Gurage Notes’ (Africa, xx, 1950, pp. 335-44) of my Ethiopic Documents: Gurage (1950), Mr. Ullendorff criticizes the method I employed in collecting the material and raises some questions in relation to the grammatical description. Mr. Ullendorff makes many sweeping statements of principle concerning which I would like to say a few words.
