In the previous works by the authors, an efficient method of control of the inversion of the spinning spacecraft was proposed. This method was prompted by the Dzhanibekov’s Effect or Tennis Racket Theorem, which are often seen by many as odd or even mysterious. For the spacecraft, initially undergoing periodic flipping motion, proposed method allows to completely stop these flips by transferring the unstable motion into the regular stable spin. Similarly, the method allows activation of the flipping motion of the spacecraft, which is initially undergoing its stable spin. In this paper, spacecraft designs, which have inertial morphing capabilities, are considered and their advantages are further investigated. For general formulation, the ability of the spacecraft to change its inertial properties, associated with all three principal axes of inertia, are assumed. For simulation of these types of spacecraft systems, extended Euler’s equations are used and peculiar dynamics of the spacecraft is illustrated with a several study cases. Complex spacecraft attitude dynamics manoeuvres, using geometric interpretation, employing angular momentum spheres and kinetic energy ellipsoids, are considered in detail. Contributions of the inertial morphing to the changes of the shape of the kinetic energy ellipsoid are demonstrated and are related to the resultant various feature manoeuvres, including inversion and re-orientation. A method of reduction of the compound rotation of the spacecraft into a single stable predominant rotation around one of the body axes was proposed. This is achieved via multi-stage morphing and employing proposed instalment into separatrices. Implementation of the morphing control capabilities are discussed. For the periodic inversion motions, calculation of the periods of the flipping motion, based on the complete elliptic integral of the first kind, is performed. Flipping periods for various combinations of inertial properties of the spacecraft are presented in a systematic way. This paper discusses strategies to the increase or reduction the flipping and/or wobbling motions. A discovered asymmetric ridge of high periods for peculiar combinations of the inertial properties is discussed in detail. Numerous examples are illustrated with animations in virtual reality, facilitating explanation of the analysis and control methodologies to a wide audience, including specialists, industry and students.

In conventional linear parameter-varying (LPV) modelling and gain scheduling control design for turbojet engines, the linearisation is performed at a set of equilibrium points, and the validity of such LPV models is ensured near the equilibria. However, the linear model can only provide an approximate description of the engine’s state when the system operates away from equilibrium. In this paper, it is suggested that such linearisation should be carried out not only at equilibrium states but also in transient (off-equilibrium) operating regimes. This will result in a global approximation to the system states whether equilibrium or off-equilibrium. Theoretically, the transient control performance can be improved by introducing such an off-equilibrium linearisation-based control procedure. Subsequently, a gain scheduling control procedure based on off-equilibrium linearisation models is proposed by using sum-of-squares (SOS) programming, which, compared with many convex programming methods, can provide less conservative results. The resulting off-equilibrium linearisation-based nonlinear control procedure with SOS programming can capture a wide range of transient engine dynamics with better accuracy, and further achieve better control performance.

The ever-growing need to improve manufacturing processes has led recently to an increase in the number of automation solutions used to assemble aircraft structural elements. A process of interest to this industry is the alignment of fuselage sections, which is currently done either manually or by complex, expensive automated systems. The manual method introduces a significant production delay and most automated systems have limited flexibility. This article presents an integration solution implemented in an alternative low-cost, high-flexibility alignment robotic cell. The performance of an optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM) as feedback source for the adaptive control of a conventional industrial manipulator is assessed. Laser interferometry readings are used as reference. The contribution of the work lies in the execution of experiments based on the EN ISO 9283 standard (Manipulating industrial robots - performance criteria and related test methods) to determine the adequacy of the commercial off-the-shelf system to the tolerances and requirements of the fuselage alignment process at hand. The optimal configuration of the integrated system attained the nominal alignment position with an average accuracy of 0.16mm and $0.004^\circ$ , partially meeting the required tolerances, and the obtained values are nearly 16x better compared to a baseline, open-loop manipulator. These results serve as reference for the aerospace industry in the development of the next generation of tools and automated assembly processes.

The paper presents the design and experimental testing of the control system used in a new morphing wing application with a full-scaled portion of a real wing. The morphing actuation system uses four similar miniature brushless DC (BLDC) motors placed inside the wing, which execute a direct actuation of the flexible upper surface of the wing made from composite materials. The control system of each actuator uses three control loops (current, speed and position) characterised by five control gains. To tune the control gains, the Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) method is used. The application of the PSO method supposed the development of a MATLAB/Simulink® software model for the controlled actuator, which worked together with a software sub-routine implementing the PSO algorithm to find the best values for the five control gains that minimise the cost function. Once the best values of the control gains are established, the software model of the controlled actuator is numerically simulated in order to evaluate the quality of the obtained control system. Finally, the designed control system is experimentally validated in bench tests and wind-tunnel tests for all four miniature actuators integrated in the morphing wing experimental model. The wind-tunnel testing treats the system as a whole and includes, besides the evaluation of the controlled actuation system, the testing of the integrated morphing wing experimental model and the evaluation of the aerodynamic benefits brought by the morphing technology on this project. From this last perspective, the airflow on the morphing upper surface of the experimental model is monitored by using various techniques based on pressure data collection with Kulite pressure sensors or on infrared thermography camera visualisations.

Aiming at the issue of missiles attacking on-ground maneuvering targets in three-dimensional space, a three-dimensional finite-time guidance law with impact-angle constraints is proposed. In order to improve convergence speed and restrain chattering phenomenon, the nonsingular fast terminal three-dimensional second-order sliding mode guidance law with coupling terms is designed based on the theory of nonhomogeneous fast terminal sliding surface and second-order sliding mode control. The system model need not be linearized during the design process, and the singular problem is avoided. A nonhomogeneous disturbance observer is designed to estimate and compensate the total disturbance, which is caused by target maneuvering information and coupling terms of line of sight. And the stability and finite-time convergence of the guidance law are proved strictly and mathematically. Finally, simulation results have verified the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed guidance law.

This paper presents the development and implementation of a user-defined material (UMAT) model for NiTi Shape-Memory Alloy (SMA) wires for use in LS-DYNA commercial explicit finite-element analysis software. The UMAT focusses on the Shape-Memory Effect (SME), which could be used for actuation of aerostructural components. The actuation of a fundamental structure consisting of an SMA wire connected in series with a linear spring was studied first. The SMA thermomechanical behaviour obtained from the finite-element simulation was compared with that obtained from the analytical solution in MATLAB. A further comparison is presented for an SMA-actuated cantilever beam, showing excellent agreement in terms of the SMA stress and strain as well as the tip deflection of the cantilever beam. A mesh sensitivity study on the SMA wire indicated that one beam element was adequate to accurately predict the SMA thermomechanical behaviour. An analysis of several key parameters showed that, to achieve a high recovery strain, the stiffness of the actuated structure should be minimised while the cross-sectional area of the SMA wire should be maximised. The actuation of an SMA wire under a constant stress/load was also analysed. The SMA material model was finally applied to the design of morphing aluminium and composite aerofoils consisting of corrugated sections, resulting in the prediction of reasonably large trailing-edge deflections (7.8–65.9 mm).

This paper proposes a fault-tolerant control (FTC) method based on fast fault observer (FFO) to solve the problem of actuator gain loss fault and stuck fault for hypersonic vehicles. Firstly, an input-output feedback linearisation model is presented that considers parametric uncertainties, control input saturation, disturbances and actuator faults. Secondly, the above factors are defined as an integrated fault item, and an improved fast fault observer is designed to estimate the integrated fault in real time. Finally, the fault-tolerant controller is constructed based on the sliding mode and fault estimation. In case of unknown faults, the effects of gain loss fault or stuck fault happen on elevators and the engine can be quickly processed, Also, the asymptotically stable tracking of the flight output reference command is completed to achieve fault-tolerant control. The final simulation experiment verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The analysis of the aerodynamic environment of the re-entry vehicle attaches great importance to the design of the novel drag reduction strategies, and the combinational spike and jet concept has shown promising application for the drag reduction in supersonic flows. In this paper, the drag force reduction mechanism induced by the combinational spike and lateral jet concept with the freestream Mach number being 5.9332 has been investigated numerically by means of the two-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model, and the effects of the lateral jet location and its number on the drag reduction of the blunt body have been evaluated. The obtained results show that the drag force of the blunt body can be reduced more profoundly when employing the dual lateral jets, and its maximum percentage is 38.81%, with the locations of the first and second lateral jets arranged suitably. The interaction between the leading shock wave and the first lateral jet has a great impact on the drag force reduction. The drag force reduction is more evident when the interaction is stronger. Due to the inclusion of the lateral jet, the pressure intensity at the reattachment point of the blunt body decreases sharply, as well as the temperature near the walls of the spike and the blunt body, and this implies that the multi-lateral jet is beneficial for the drag reduction.

This paper considers actuator redundancy management for a redundant multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) under actuators failures. Different approaches are proposed: using robust control (passive fault tolerance), and reconfigurable control (active fault tolerance). The robust controller is designed using high-order super-twisting sliding mode techniques, and handles the failures without requiring information from a Fault Detection scheme. The Active Fault-Tolerant Control (AFTC) is achieved through redistributing the control signals among the healthy actuators using reconfigurable multiplexing and pseudo-inverse control allocation. The Fault Detection and Isolation problem is also considered by proposing model-based and model-free modules. The proposed techniques are all implemented on a coaxial octorotor UAV. Different experiments with different scenarios were conducted for the validation of the proposed strategies. Finally, advantages, disadvantages, application considerations and limitations of each method are examined through quantitative and qualitative studies.

Motivated by the idea of turbomachinery active subspace performance maps, this paper studies dimension reduction in turbomachinery 3D CFD simulations. First, we show that these subspaces exist across different blades—under the same parametrisation—largely independent of their Mach number or Reynolds number. This is demonstrated via a numerical study on three different blades. Then, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost of identifying a suitable dimension reducing subspace, we examine statistical sufficient dimension reduction methods, including sliced inverse regression, sliced average variance estimation, principal Hessian directions and contour regression. Unsatisfied by these results, we evaluate a new idea based on polynomial variable projection—a non-linear least-squares problem. Our results using polynomial variable projection clearly demonstrate that one can accurately identify dimension reducing subspaces for turbomachinery functionals at a fraction of the cost associated with prior methods. We apply these subspaces to the problem of comparing design configurations across different flight points on a working line of a fan blade. We demonstrate how designs that offer a healthy compromise between performance at cruise and sea-level conditions can be easily found by visually inspecting their subspaces.

This paper presents a novel method for quantifying the effect of ambient, environmental and operating conditions on the progression of degradation in aircraft gas turbines based on the measured engine and environmental parameters. The proposed equivalent operating time (EOT) model considers the degradation modes of fouling, erosion, and blade-tip wear due to creep strain, and expresses the actual degradation rate over the engine clock time relative to a pre-defined reference condition. In this work, the effects of changing environmental and engine operating conditions on the EOT for the core engine booster compressor and the high-pressure turbine were assessed by performance simulation with an engine model. The application to a single and multiple flight scenarios showed that, compared to the actual engine clock time, the EOT provides a clear description of component degradation, prediction of remaining useful life, and sufficient margin for maintenance action to be planned and performed before functional failure.

This paper provides an assessment of current rotor design comparison practices. First, the employed CFD method is validated for a number of rotor designs and is shown to achieve accurate performance predictions in hover and high-speed forward flight. Based on CFD results, a detailed investigation is performed in terms of comparing different rotor designs. The CFD analysis highlighted the need of high fidelity methods due to the subtle aerodynamics involved in advanced planforms. Nevertheless, the paper suggests that the correct basis for comparison in terms of performance metrics must be used to inform decisions about the suitability of the rotor blades designs for specific applications. In particular, when comparing blades of advanced planforms, direct torque and thrust comparisons are better than the commonly used lift to drag ratio and figure of merit.

The early conceptual design (CD) phase of space access vehicles (SAVs) is the most abstract, innovative and technologically challenging phase of the entire aerospace design life cycle. Although the design decision-making during this phase influences around 80 percent of the overall life cycle cost, it is the most abstract and thus least understood phase of the entire design life cycle. The history of SAV design provides numerous examples of project failures that could have been avoided if the decision-maker had had the capability to forecast the potential risks and threats correctly ahead of time during the conceptual design phase. The present study addresses this crucial phase and demonstrates a best-practice synthesis methodology prototype to advance the current state of the art of CD as applied to SAV design. Developed by the Aerospace Vehicle Design (AVD) Laboratory at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the Aerospace Vehicle Design Synthesis process and software (AVDS) is a prototype solution for a flight vehicle configuration–flexible (generic) design synthesis capability that can be applied to the primary categories of SAVs. This study focusses on introducing AVDS, followed by the demonstration and verification of the system’s capability through a sizing case study based on the data-rich Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane.

Aircraft sequencing and scheduling within terminal airspaces has become more complicated due to increased air traffic demand and airspace complexity. A stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed to handle aircraft sequencing and scheduling problems using the simulated annealing algorithm. The proposed model allows for proper aircraft sequencing considering wind direction uncertainties, which are critical in the decision-making process. The proposed model aims to minimise total aircraft delay for a runway airport serving mixed operations. To test the stochastic model, an appropriate number of scenarios were generated for different air traffic demand rates. The results indicate that the stochastic model reduces the total aircraft delay considerably when compared with the deterministic approach.

This paper evaluates six supersonic business jet (SSBJ) concepts in a multidisciplinary design analysis optimisation (MDAO) environment in terms of their aerodynamics and sonic boom intensities. The aerodynamic analysis and sonic boom prediction are investigated by a number of conceptual-level numerical approaches. The panel method PANAIR is integrated to perform automated aerodynamic analysis. The drag coefficient is corrected by the Harris wave drag formula and form factor method. For sonic boom prediction, the near-field pressure is predicted through the Whitham F-function method. The F-function is decomposed to the F-function due to volume and the F-function due to lift to investigate the separate effect on sonic boom. The propagation method for the near-field signature in a stratified windy atmosphere is the waveform parameter method. In this research, using the methods described and publically available data on the concepts, the supersonic drag elements and sonic boom signature due to volume distribution and lift distribution are analysed. Based on the analysis, low-boom and low-drag design principles are identified.

Because the wing-structure weight required to support the critical wing section bending moments is a function of wingspan, net weight, weight distribution, and lift distribution, there exists an optimum wingspan and wing-structure weight for any fixed net weight, weight distribution, and lift distribution, which minimises the induced drag in steady level flight. Analytic solutions for the optimum wingspan and wing-structure weight are presented for rectangular wings with four different sets of design constraints. These design constraints are fixed lift distribution and net weight combined with 1) fixed maximum stress and wing loading, 2) fixed maximum deflection and wing loading, 3) fixed maximum stress and stall speed, and 4) fixed maximum deflection and stall speed. For each of these analytic solutions, the optimum wing-structure weight is found to depend only on the net weight, independent of the arbitrary fixed lift distribution. Analytic solutions for optimum weight and lift distributions are also presented for the same four sets of design constraints. Depending on the design constraints, the optimum lift distribution can differ significantly from the elliptic lift distribution. Solutions for two example wing designs are presented, which demonstrate how the induced drag varies with lift distribution, wingspan, and wing-structure weight in the design space near the optimum solution. Although the analytic solutions presented here are restricted to rectangular wings, these solutions provide excellent test cases for verifying numerical algorithms used for more general multidisciplinary analysis and optimisation.

Exergy efficiency can be used as an objective function in order to improve systems efficiency. Thus, the most efficient regions for the operation parameters can be searched easily. Exergy efficiency data of a turboprop engine’s components that have been calculated using basic engine parameters in the previous studies are modeled using cubic spline curve fitting methodology. Spline curves are on the two dimensional plane, where x axis is the input parameter and y axis is the exergy efficiency of the component. A spline curve is defined by the points subject to arbitrary selection of number and position. Initially positions of the points are located with two different methods and then in order to obtain better accuracy point positions are improved by ‘Ant colony’ and ‘Goldsection’ optimisation methods. Sum of Squares of the errors between the fitted value and data value was used as the fitness function. Least square error of 5 × 10−9 is assumed as acceptable accuracy which yields to a minimum R = 0.9998 linear correlation coefficient. In the optimisation step, independent engine variable versus calculated engine performance parameters were checked against spline fitted values. Improvement of the fitness function is observed as the number of fitting points is increased. Ant colony optimisation in engine exergy efficiency parametric modeling is a new approach in authors’ point of view.

This paper focuses on the problem of skin corrosion on the upper wing surfaces of rib-stiffened aircraft. For maritime and military transport aircraft this often results in multiple co-located repairs. The common approach to corrosion damage in operational aircraft is to blend out the corrosion and rivet a mechanical doubler over the region. In particular this paper describes the results of a combined numerical and experimental investigation into the ability of the additive metal technology, Supersonic Particle Deposition (SPD), to restore the load-carrying capacity of rib-stiffened wing planks with simulated skin corrosion. The experimental results reveal that unrepaired skin corrosion can result in failure by yielding. The experimental results also reveal that SPD repairs to skin corrosion can restore the stress field in the structure, and can ensure that the load-carrying capability of the repaired structure is above proof load.

Prediction of aeroengine exhaust plume near-field development requires knowledge of velocity and turbulence distributions at nozzle exit. The high Reynolds number nozzle inlet boundary layers of engineering practice are fully turbulent, but acceleration can induce re-laminarisation. Thus, to reproduce nozzle exit conditions accurately, large eddy simulation (LES) for plume prediction must be capable of capturing re-laminarisation and any subsequent boundary layer recovery. Validation is essential to establish a credible LES methodology, but previous studies have suffered from lack of nozzle inlet/exit measurements in the test cases selected. Validation data were here taken from an experiment on a convergent round nozzle with a parallel exit extension to allow boundary layer recovery. LES inlet condition generation applied a rescaling/recycling method (R2M), whose performance was validated against measurements of first and second moment statistics as well as the turbulence integral length scale. Simulations employed two sub-grid-scale (SGS) models; these produced similar predictions up to the end of the nozzle convergent section, but marked differences appeared for the nozzle exit turbulence field. The Smagorinsky model predicted much lower turbulence levels than measured, whereas the Piomelli and Geurts model revealed the presence of a small separation region at the convergence/parallel section corner, which led to higher exit turbulence and much better agreement with measured data.

In this article, we investigate the horizontal trajectory tracking problem for an underactuated stratospheric airship subject to nonvanishing external disturbances and model uncertainties. By transforming the tracking errors into new virtual error variables, we can specify the transient and steady-state tracking performance of the resulting nonlinear system quantitatively, which means that under the proposed control scheme, the tracking errors will converge to prescribed residual sets around the origin before a preselected finite time with decay rates no less than a preassignable value. To address unknown items, minimal learning parameter (MLP) techniques for neural networks (NNs) approximation are employed, which efficaciously relax the computational burden, enhance the robustness against dynamics uncertainties and provide an improved property for disturbances rejection. A finite-time convergent observer (FTCO) is incorporated into the control framework to realise output-feedback control, ensuring that estimation errors are bounded during operation and approach zero within a finite time. Stability analysis proves that all the closed-loop signals are uniformly bounded. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed control strategy are verified by simulation results.
