From today's perspective, Schiller's Aesthetic Letters appear to anticipate the possibility of a new era of politicized popular aesthetics. By expanding the notion of aesthetic play toward the concept of an aesthetic kingdom of beautiful semblance (“Reich des schönen Scheins”), Schiller was the first to debate potential ethical and political effects of an aesthetically permeated culture for human cognition and behavior — an area of inquiry that has gained much notoriety in modern mass-media studies and plays a large role in Odo Marquard's philosophy of aesthetic compensation. While Schiller advocated his aesthetic strategy to preempt revolutionary change, he was, nevertheless, aware of some of the dangers that this path poses to human freedom and discussed them in two lesser-known essays. Ultimately, the concept of the beautiful fictitious semblance of freedom (“schöner Schein der Freiheit”), which seems quite contradictory at first glance, cannot and must not be resolved on either side. In Schiller's realistic approach there is no freedom without aesthetic illusion and no beauty without freedom.
AUF DER SUCHE NACH Schillers Aktualität spreche ich in diesem Beitrag Aspekte seiner ästhetischen Theorie an, die vor dem Hintergrund heutiger Überlegungen (insbesondere von Odo Marquard) zur gesellschaftlichen Funktionalität ästhetischer Kompensation und Therapie als Antizipationen einer kulturpolitisch relevanten Ästhetik aufscheinen. Dieser Brückenschlag von Schiller zu Marquard, den dieser zwar in Bezug auf Schillers Geschichts philosophie, nicht aber in Bezug auf seine Ästhetik selbst durchdacht hat, scheint mir nicht zuletzt darum aktuell, weil er eine alternative und zugleich komplementäre Sicht zu Peter Sloterdijks Philosophie der spirituellen Immunisierung bietet, in der die literarische Ästhetik hauptsächlich als metaphorischer Stichwortgeber eingespannt wird.
