The history of the United States is full of war, and D. H. Lawrence famously said that the essential American is hard, isolate, stoic, and a killer. But that same history is also full of fruitful, thoughtful, courageous opposition to war, and of manifestations of the antiwar impulse in impressively varied and intense literary and artistic forms. This essay sets out that long history and discusses some of those manifestations from the Civil War to the present.
