Appendix 2: An act for the better furnishing the court of convocation with members fit for so high and necessary an assembly
Forasmuch as the lawful assemblies of the clergy of this realm by the king's writ, in the court commonly called the convocation, is well observed not only to be warranted by the Word of God and the example of the primitive church to be of most worthy service and use for the ordering of matters touching the institution of the soul and divine knowledge, for the reformation of conscience and for the direction of the clergy in the execution of their duties, in the administration of the Word to the edification of the people with the more profit and Suit in their particular congregations, and consequently most necessary that the members of the said court chosen to holy service should be of the worthiest persons both for life and doctrine, be it therefore enacted that from henceforth no ecclesiastical person shall be chosen and sent to the said court of convocation as a member of the said court, to treat of matters belonging to the jurisdiction thereof, but such as shall be resident upon their cures and show their honest and true care over their congregations by their weekly labour among them in the due administration of the Word, and that no person whatsoever be from henceforth allowed to have any voice in the choice or election of any person to be of the court of assembly, but such as then shall be resident also as aforesaid, and weekly exercising their ministry in their cures.
