Summary

This chapter is a topical interlude. It describes the debate over Catholics’ “deficit in education,” whose impact dramatically expanded popular reading desires in the Wilhelmine era of German history to the outbreak of World War I. According to the Protestant-Liberal establishment, Catholics were “stupid”; therefore, they deserved their place on the margins of German society. Most Catholics were unwilling to accept this cultural judgment and social placement. They adjusted their reading habits accordingly in an attempt to meet the demands for inclusion set on them.
