Summary

Appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in pregnancy. Delayed management can substantially worsen morbidity, so a high index of suspicion and emergent management should be considered. Clinical signs and symptoms consistent with appendicitis in pregnancy include fever, nausea, vomiting, defecation irregularities, and generalized or right-sided abdominal pain. Leukocytosis and appendiceal abnormalities on ultrasound, MRI, or computed tomography point to the diagnosis. Surgical management is recommended in pregnancy.
