It is the assumption of this monograph that chapters 10–13 of 2 Corinthians represent a separate epistle written shortly after chapters 1–9. Others, however, identify chapters 10–13 with the painful letter of 2:3–4, 9; 7:8, 12, and thus with a letter composed before chapters 1–9 (see Hausrath Vier-Capitelbrief 302–14, Watson ‘Painful Letter’ 324–46 and Strachan xvi-xx; and cf.
