Summary

It is the assumption of this monograph that chapters 10–13 of 2 Corinthians represent a separate epistle written shortly after chapters 1–9. This is the position of Barrett 18–21; ‘‘O’ AΔIKHAΣAΣ’ 156–57; ‘Titus’ 8–14; Thrall ‘Second Thanksgiving’ 121–22; Munck Paul 169–71; Buck ‘Collection’ 9–29; Pherigo ‘Paul’ 341–50; Batey ‘Paul's Interaction’ 139–46; Windisch 17–20; Bruce 170–72; Furnish 35–41; Martin xli-xlvi. Others, however, identify chapters 10–13 with the painful letter of 2:3–4, 9; 7:8, 12, and thus with a letter composed before chapters 1–9 (see Hausrath Vier-Capitelbrief 302–14, Watson ‘Painful Letter’ 324–46 and Strachan xvi-xx; and cf. Weiss Earliest Christianity 323–57 [esp. 349, 357], Vielhauer Geschichte 150–55 and Bultmann 23, who include 2:14–6:13 and 7:2–4 with 10–13 as part of the painful letter; and Bornkamm ‘Vorgeschichte’ 162–94, Georgi Gegner 25–29 and Marxen Introduction 77–82, who identify 10–13 with the painful letter but regard 2:14–6:13 and 7:2–4 as an earlier, and 1:1–2:23 and 7:5–8:24 as a later, epistle). Still others contend for the full literary integrity of 2 Corinthians (thus Bates ‘Integrity’ 56–59; Stephenson ‘Partition Theories’ 639–46; Allo l-lvi; Hughes xxi-xxxv; Kümmel Introduction 287–93; Lietzmann 139; Wendland 7; Tasker 23–25; Harris 303–6; Menzies xxxiv-xxxvii).
