When I told Clare Alexander, my splendid agent for over two decades, that I wanted to write a book about the Amendolas, father and son, she replied sceptically: ‘Who has ever heard of the Amendolas?’ In Italy, as noted in my Conclusion, Giovanni, the Anti-Fascist, is commemorated in almost every town and city; Giorgio less so, but he does have an active foundation named in his honour.
