In pulmonary sling, the left pulmonary artery arises from the right pulmonary artery. The anomalous left pulmonary artery passes posteriorly, between the trachea and esophagus, to supply the left lung (Figure 50.1) [1–3]. Pulmonary sling is associated with the presence of complete tracheal rings in 50–65% of cases [2]. The complete rings are usually narrowed. This constellation of findings is known as ring-sling complex and can cause life-threatening respiratory complications in infants.
Importance
While rare in asymptomatic adults, pulmonary sling may mimic a mediastinal mass on chest radiograph.
