This chapter will address the broad range of issues pertaining to kidney disease that may be encountered in the neurointensive care unit. It will focus on the diagnosis and management of both acute and chronic renal dysfunction, as well as the fluid and electrolyte disturbances that frequently accompany kidney disease. Early consultation with nephrology for acute kidney injury in the ICU setting has been associated with improved outcomes, even when dialysis is not performed [1]. Thus, the goals of the following sections are to discuss the diagnosis and management strategies of renal dysfunction from a nephrologist’s perspective.
