Maria is sitting in her living room flipping channels while she looks at text messages on her phone. She has had a very bad week. Three months ago in the shower she found a lump in her left breast, she wasn’t even doing the self-exam her daughter Cecilia texted her about a year ago. She looked at the picture on their text thread and saw the systematic way to check herself and thought it sounded like a really good idea, but she got busy and forgot about it. That day back in October she was showering to get ready to go to her job in the small boutique intellectual property law firm she had joined over a decade ago. Her kids had been in high school at that time, and it seem liked a great way to get back into full-time law after going part-time when her kids were younger.
