Summary
There are different types of neurotransmitter receptors on neuronal surfaces. These are molecules specialised in transforming a chemical signal (neurotransmitter) into a metabolic signal (downstream activation of protein kinases, phosphatases, and/or nuclear effects on DNA accessibility or synthesis) in the target cell. A slightly different but parallel concept is that of drug target.
