The UCLA Labor Center and the CLEAN Carwash Campaign

In this chapter, I argue that the role of labor research and education in revitalizing the labor movement in the twenty-first century is more important than ever. I will support this argument using as a case study the CLEAN Carwash Campaign, a project launched by the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education (UCLA Labor Center), where I have served as the Project Director for the last fifteen years. The CLEAN Carwash Campaign led to the first-ever union for carwash workers. This chapter will focus on its trajectory, including the important role played by students from the Labor and Workplace Studies Program at UCLA’s Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) and other student internship programs. Using this example, the chapter will show how labor research and education can foster the next generation of union organizers and worker leaders to revitalize the labor movement.
