Summary

This chapter covers the transfusions section of the ABA initial certification in anesthesiology outline for the in-training, BASIC, and ADVANCED examinations. In this chapter the indications for transfusion of blood products, blood product collection and processing, blood product preservation and storage, blood product components, blood product donation and salvage techniques, and blood filters and pumps are reviewed. Additionally, this chapter covers volume expanders, such as crystalloids and colloids, as well as synthetic and recombinant forms of hemoglobin. The format of this review is through high yield bullet points, to allow the reader a more rapid review of important concepts covered on the in-training, BASIC, and ADVANCED Anesthesia examinations. It has been updated from its previous version to reflect the most recent ABA outline as well as the most recent standards of practice.
