• Patients with ADHD rarely grow out of it; they might learn how to compensate for the disorder, but under the surface the symptoms usually remain.
• ADHD has many different faces, depending on the patient's gender and age, and thus age-appropriate rating scales should be used for each patient population in order to ensure a correct diagnosis.
• ADHD is often not a stand-alone disorder; children and adults often present with comorbid disorders including Tourette’s, anxiety, substance use, or sleep disorders.
• Different stimulant and non-stimulant medications are available for the treatment of ADHD, and it is important to know how they mechanistically improve the symptoms of ADHD.
• Understanding the differences between stimulant drug formulations will be helpful to the physician to better treat their patients.
• Individualized treatment will ascertain the best possible outcome for each patient, depending on age, comorbid disorder, and side effect profile of the medication.
