Summary
COOKBURY
Two rates survive for this parish located four miles north-east of Holsworthy. In about 1500 John Gay, churchwarden, was in dispute with his parishioners regarding ‘Wrenne Park’ which is not noted on this rate. Some 15 per cent of the population contributed to the rates.

Note: This rate, a fair copy, was written on a sheet of paper which measures 8 inches in width and 11 inches in length. It is endorsed ‘1613 Cookbury Rate’. There is a copy within at the Devon Heritage Centre which also includes parish boundaries. This rate has been torn along the upper right hand corner. The numerals are Roman with the exception of the year and the document sequence number.
