To understand caregivers’ perceptions about their children’s mealtime social experiences at school, and how they believe these social experiences impact their children’s consumption of meals at school (both meals brought from home and school meals).

Qualitative data were originally collected as part of a larger mixed methods study using an embedded-QUAN dominant research design.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with United States (U.S.) caregivers over ZoomTM in English and Spanish during the 2021-2022 school year. The interview guide contained 14 questions on caregivers’ perceptions about their children’s experiences with school meals.

Caregivers of students in elementary, middle, and high schools in rural, suburban, and urban communities in California (n=46) and Maine (n=20) were interviewed. Most (60.6%) were caregivers of children who were eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

Caregivers reported that an important benefit of eating meals at school is their child’s opportunity to socialize with their peers. Caregivers also stated that their child’s favorite aspect of school lunch is socializing with friends. However, some caregivers reported the cafeteria environment caused their children to feel anxious and not eat. Other caregivers reported that their children sometimes skipped lunch and chose to socialize with friends rather than wait in long lunch lines.

Socializing during school meals is important to both caregivers and students. Policies such as increasing lunch period lengths and holding recess before lunch have been found to promote school meal consumption and could reinforce the positive social aspects of mealtime for students.

Residential treatment facilities for eating disorders are becoming increasingly common and purport to provide recovery-orientated care in a less restrictive environment than traditional hospital settings. However, minimal attention has focused on individuals’ lived experiences of these residential services.

This study explores participants’ lived experiences of care at Australia’s first residential facility for the treatment of eating disorders.

Qualitative data were collected as part of a clinical evaluation (June 2021 to August 2023). Fifteen women participated in semi-structured interviews about their experience of treatment following discharge. Data were analysed with inductive reflexive thematic analysis.

Three main themes were generated from the data that included participants’ journeys to treatment, experiences of treatment and the transitions associated with and following discharge. Cutting across these main themes were participants’ encounters of barriers, setbacks and hope. Participant experiences of residential treatment were complex and multifaceted, marked by inherent ideological dilemmas that arose in balancing standardised treatment protocols with person-centred and recovery-oriented care. Participants also spoke of reclaiming a sense of self and identity beyond their eating disorder, emphasising the importance of relationships and consistent and collaborative care.

Participant accounts of residential treatment emphasised the importance of holistic, person-centred and recovery-oriented care. Despite the complexities of treatment experiences, participant narratives underscored how recovery may be more about the reclamation of a sense of identity outside of the eating disorder than merely symptom improvement. As such, adopting person-centred and recovery-oriented treatment approaches within residential treatment settings may maximise individual autonomy and promote holistic recovery pathways.

The Peruvian public healthcare system is characterized by various shortcomings that adversely affect healthcare quality as perceived by the general and minority populations, including the Afro-Peruvian community. This population has demonstrated reduced healthcare access due to discrimination and differential treatment, reflecting broader societal inequities.

This study explores the experiences and perceptions of Afro-Peruvian individuals regarding the treatment they receive from public primary healthcare providers in metropolitan Lima.

In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with Afro-Peruvian individuals recruited from Lima. They were selected based on their responses to a survey conducted in a previous study, which indicated a high or low perception of intercultural adaptation in healthcare. The interviews explored their experiences with healthcare services and their perceptions about their interactions with health providers. The qualitative analysis involved topic coding to interpret the data.

We interviewed 19 Afro-Peruvians, including 15 women and 4 men, ages 26 to 70. The findings reveal that Afro-Peruvians generally experience mistreatment in the healthcare system. In their opinion, this is associated with systemic issues such as poor infrastructure, low salaries, and insufficient time allocated for patient care. Furthermore, participants perceive receiving poor quality and inefficient service not only from providers but also from the system presents difficulties in other processes, such as getting the appointment.

This study highlights significant areas for improvement in the public healthcare system, specifically enhancing the quality of patient care, improving communication, and upgrading healthcare infrastructure to serve the Afro-Peruvian community better. These insights could guide the development of targeted policy recommendations and practical interventions to address healthcare disparities and improve access to quality healthcare services for minority populations.

Despite practice development in the area of advanced care planning (ACP) and systems wide changes implemented to support ACP processes, there has been a paucity of research which has addressed the experiences of a key stakeholder group – family and carers – as they navigate their way through these often very challenging processes. The study described in this article focussed on this key group.

In-depth qualitative interviews were undertaken with family members and carers in a regional area of Australia in order to illuminate their lived experiences of ACP processes.

Thematic analysis of the narrative data yielded 4 key themes: Being overwhelmed on the ACP journey; unifying effects of completing and using an advanced care directive (ACD); experiencing the highlights and lowlights of care; and paying it forward in advice to staff, carers and families.

The ACP journey is unique for each carer/family and can be overwhelming. Whilst he lived experiences of families/carers indicated that the quality of care received was of a high standard, feedback to staff suggested their communications be timelier and more empathic. All participants in this study reported benefitting from engaging in ACP early and appreciated support to do so. All benefitted from the preparation of an ACD and found the outcomes (in terms of concordance) gratifying.

In Michigan, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted Black and Latinx communities. These communities experienced higher rates of exposure, hospitalizations, and deaths compared to Whites. We examine the impact of the pandemic and reasons for the higher burden on communities of color from the perspectives of Black and Latinx community members across four Michigan counties and discuss recommendations to better prepare for future public health emergencies.

Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews (n = 40) with Black and Latinx individuals across the four counties. Interviews focused on knowledge related to the pandemic, the impact of the pandemic on their lives, sources of information, attitudes toward vaccination and participation in vaccine trials, and perspectives on the pandemic’s higher impact on communities of color.

Participants reported overwhelming effects of the pandemic in terms of worsened physical and mental health, financial difficulties, and lifestyle changes. They also reported some unexpected positive effects. They expressed awareness of the disproportionate burden among Black and Latinx populations and attributed this to a wide range of disparities in Social Determinants of Health. These included racism and systemic inequities, lack of access to information and language support, cultural practices, medical mistrust, and varied individual responses to the pandemic.

Examining perspectives and experiences of those most impacted by the pandemic is essential for preparing for and effectively responding to public health emergencies in the future. Public health messaging and crisis response strategies must acknowledge the concerns and cultural needs of underrepresented populations.

Compassionate Cities are a novel approach to health-promotive palliative care that uses a population-based approach to promote health and encourage its citizens to act with confidence to help others during death, dying, or bereavement. This study aimed to provide a critical account of how the leaders of a Compassionate City adopted the initiative and how they experienced its development and implementation.

An interpretative qualitative case study was conducted in a newly established Compassionate City in the UK. Data was collected using in-depth interviews, documentary analysis, and non-participatory observations. Reflective thematic analysis was used to analyze the contents of the multiple resources.

Five observations, 4 document analyses, and 11 interviews with members of the Compassionate City steering committee were conducted. We identified 4 themes: right model, right people, in the right place, at the right time; building a network of organizations and individuals; building sustainable community capacity to deal with grief, loss, and bereavement; and, embedding and sustaining the Compassionate City initiative. The study also found that cross-cutting factors such as leadership, visibility of work, evaluation, communication, and funding influenced and shaped the key themes when developing and implementing the Compassionate City.

This study provides broad insight into the key actions taken by the leaders of a Compassionate City aiming to improve the end-of-life experience of its citizens. We highlight the many challenges and complexities faced by the leaders when translating the concepts of Compassionate Cities into practice and identify key elements to consider for the successful implementation of future initiatives.

The population of adults with single-ventricle congenital heart disease (CHD) is growing. This study explores their lived experiences through an adult developmental psychology framework.

Individuals aged 18 and older with single-ventricle CHD participated in Experience Group sessions and 1:1 interviews. Sessions were transcribed and analysed thematically. Themes were categorized by developmental domains and age group.

Of the 29 participants, 18 (62%) were female, 10 (35%) were emerging (18–29 years), 13 (45%) were established (30–45 years), and 6 (21%) were midlife adults (46–60 years). Emerging adults expressed reluctance to initiate romantic relationships and fear of burdening partners, while established adults reported strong relationships with partners deeply involved in caregiving. Emerging adults struggled with finding fulfilling work that meets their health needs, whereas established and midlife adults faced unemployment or early retirement due to health limits. Family dynamics shifted, with established and midlife adults educating their children to become caregivers. Physical limitations and low self-rated health were consistent across life stages, and midlife adults did not worry about traditional chronic conditions. Mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression, persisted across all life stages, but resiliency and positive affect were also evident.

Adults with single-ventricle CHD experience developmental milestones differently, indicating the need for early anticipatory guidance in these domains to achieve optimal outcomes in adulthood.

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) practitioners recognize the significance of qualitative methodologies that focus on how a technology is feasible, meaningfulness, acceptable, and equitable. This mapping aimed to delineate the frameworks employed to synthesize qualitative evidence and assess the quality of synthesis in HTA .

Mapping was conducted using Medline, LILACS, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, JBI, and ScienceDirect databases. Gray literature searches included PROQUEST, Open Grey, Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health’s Grey Matters, Google Scholar, and HTA agency websites. The inclusion criteria were centered on global qualitative evidence synthesis frameworks. The data are presented in the tables.

Of the 2054 articles, 31 were included, mostly from Europe. Guide was the type of document more cited, and most authors are from HTA agencies and universities. Incorporating both patient and family perspectives is the most cited reason for include qualitative evidence. Regardless of the framework or tool, SPICE was the main acronym, and RETREAT was preferred for approach selection. Thematic synthesis dominated analytic methods, and CASP was the primary quality appraisal tool. GRADE-CERQual graded evidence synthesis, with ENTREQ as the top reporting guidance. The GRADE evidence-to-decision framework was mentioned for recommendations.

This mapping highlights the movement incorporate qualitative evidence in HTA employing specific frameworks. Despite the similarities among documents, most of them describe part of the process to synthesize qualitative evidence. Standardizing procedures to incorporate qualitative evidence into HTA can enhance decision-making. These findings offer essential considerations for HTA practice.
