In her chapter, Terezinha remembers how she came to what were for her critical insights about developmental psychology. Amongst these: the distinction between productive and reproductive knowledge; the view that knowledge is not a copy of the world and originates from actions in the world; the idea that the same principles may lie beneath forms of knowledge that look very different; and that cultures are not just a context for learning but are part of the fabric of everyone’s knowledge. She writes about how her professional life helped her to think about her children’s learning and how her children’s questions triggered new questions for her research. At the time of publication, she researches how children learn literacy and mathematics and seeks to use what she learns from research to support schools in their job of teaching children to read and to use mathematics to understand the world.
